View Full Version : How to increase arm strength?

hey all,
i was wondering how i should go about increasing my arm strength so that i can use some of the more heavier player rackets once my technique is sound, which will be very soon i hope  my current racket is light, only 10.3 oz, but i myself only weigh 115 lbs (15 years old, 5'4). so my question is: should i add lead tape to my current racket over a couple of weeks (a bit more each week), until its heavy enough that it helps me get stronger without giving me bad arm problems, like TE. OR should i just continue doing weights until i find my current racket too light (and then probably add lead till i find it the right weight and see how heavy that "right weight" is).
thanks

If u add lead, it will add weight to the racuqte, but it will change the balance of it. Try to compensate the overall weight adding weight in the handle as well.
Now, to add strenght, here's my tennis advice (it worked for me):
Try to swing the heaviest racquet you have with the head cover on. Because of the air's resistance, at first, it would be extremely difficult, and your arm will be tired after 10 swings.
Try to do 10 swings each session, twice or three times a day. If your arm can take it, add some more reps.
You'll notice the difference after the first 10 swings. Remove the head cover, and you'll swing faster than ever ;)
The results are pretty fast :)

im going to go try that right now man. thanks!
Not a suggestion for everybody because you need the proper environment, but I couldn't believe the growth in the strength of my arms and shoulders after I started rowing (in the gym) and kayaking (on the ocean) on a regular basis. Never would have believed it.

andres, that thing felt really funny yet awesome. right after i did, when i swung my racket normally (no cover), it felt like an 8 oz racket, infact, i almost threw it like a hammer after my follow through :D and afterwards (10 to 15 minutes after), i still had a fast but controllable swing. thanks for that tip, looks great

Good tip, Andres. But, I can't think of any racket sold these days with only a head cover. All the ones I've seen are a full racket cover. A plastic baggie would probably work just as well, like an old shopping plastic bag.

Exactly. Anything who adds air resistance to the racquet.
A plastic bag, is a good replacement. The widest the material, the better, that's why the head cover is awesome.
I use a 18 oz wooden racquet for that purpose, and in one month, I added almost 2 inches to my biceps and one to my forearm, and i'm not kidding.

You see? It's great! ;)
Now, try to slow things down, and don't overtrain your arm. If ur arm can take it, ok, go ahead.
When ur arm gets used to it, try to add more swings.
I got to a point when I was swinging 500 times each session, 3 or four sessions per day. The racquet acceleration after that is insane. You would never believe it ;)

ok, ill probably stick to like 20 today, 30 tomorrow, 40 the day after, (for 1 rep, then 2-3 reps/day) etc. for a month, and see where it gets me. btw, 2 inches on your tricept and 1 on your forearm? if your not kidding, and this works, i LOVE you!! in the non sexual way of course

If it works, it's only due to your dedication.
I used to swing 500, or 600 times, 5 times a day. That's 3000 swings a day.
After 3 weeks, or a month, your arm will be as hard as a stone.
Devote yourself to training and fitness. That's my advice to all of you ;)

You should really be trying to target your shoulders so you can support a heavier racquet. Try using light weights (2lbs) and more reps, increasing the number of reps as you get stronger. Don't forget to properly stretch out your shoulder after exercise. If you decide to add lead tape you your racquet, add weight to the 3 & 9 O'clock areas to increase stability but do it gradually so you can get use to the added swing weight.
