Is there a proper way to cut your strings out once they break?

Start in the middle and cut diagonally both ways

That is the way generally accepted as proper. However, I don't have a set of real cutters, I use scissors. So I cut every-other string alternating between mains and crosses. The alternation (and diagonal cutting otherwise) helps prevent racket damage and distortion. I like that the way I do it produces no little tiny pieces and it is easier to get the string out.

Yeah I do it like tennsdog, but I use nail clippers.

I do it diagonally starting from the middle. I got a pair of heavy-duty Cutco scissors that can thru two strings easily.

Nail clippers are the way to go. I take a small one in my bag, as soon as I break a string I cut them out.

Yeah plus you can manicure your cuticles while doing your strings.
