If the muscles in your hand are sore and tired from holding the grip, the size may be too big.

If you're getting blisters, it may be too small (well maybe also too large too).

Try out different sizes and just see what's comfortable. There's really no defined rules as to the perfect size for your hand.

As a rule of thumb, you can use the "The index finger of your non-dominant hand should just fit between your thumb and fingers" rule.

i think many people think that's too large..... i hear more about a tiny gap between your fingertips and the thumb pad....

large is possible more consistent, fewer mishits, but harder to put topspin on the ball... small is opposite, more volatile mishits sometimes, but you can get alot of spin on the ball (i think most pro's who practice hours per day play with smaller grips)

If you are in-between size, pick the smaller one.

Big grip will make your hand tired. Also, you will be hitting flat and finding it difficult to put topspin

honestly, i think it's all preference. there are people w/ small hands using big grips and having success and the other way around. you may get blisters, but that could also be from the type of grip you are using (i cant use tacky overgrips on any gripsize or i'll get blisters after an hour). just try out different grip sizes and see what you like best.

I'm all spin and I think 5/8 is too small, I feel so much more comfortable with a large big @$$ grip.

You know what they say about small grips right:rolleyes:

I use 1/4, and the reason is because of the "ease of whip" kind of feel I get from it. My serve feels much more relaxed (my grip is relaxed), and I can hit way way better on short balls with this grip. I get great topspin and at same time can pound a flat ball inside out. I think it's certainly preference because our local pro has the same size hands as me (and I have average sized hands). He uses a 5/8 grip and it feels so cumbersome to me. Our pro smokes the ball every time he hits it, so it's probably just me. I recently purchased a racket that was 5/8 and was totally frustrated the entire time I was playing with it. Simply put, I like the whippy feel that I get from 3/8 and 1/4. My serve is better, my baseline strokes are better, and short balls are much better. Try it if you want and let us know!

Definitely if your hand is hurting then your grip is not the right size. This should be really easy to tell. When you are hitting does it feel uncomfortable in your hand? When you hit the ball does it feel like it is slipping? Do you have to hold the racket really tight to prevent it from slipping? Do not mistake this though from when you mishit the ball, when you mishit, the racket has the tendency to slip on the other hand a good comfortable grip will help you thru that, too big or too small grip will hurt. An incorrect grip size makes your hand wobble a little bit even when you are hitting solid shots.

Yeah, I agree. I like it a little smaller than the rule of thumb.

My hand is somewhat small and I love my 5.5 inch grip.
Not kidding.
My rationale is that the increased surface area makes it easier to maintain control with a lighter grip.

No surprise, I believe. My club mate is cca 5´7 (1.68 m) high and uses a grip, which is too big for me. I am 6´2 (1.85 m) and use a 4 1/2 grip + 2 overgrips = cca a 4 5/8 grip.

I've seen this Wilson guide before and think its ok as "general information" which in "most" cases is fairly accurate - more accurate than most think.

I also think the advice of going with the "smaller" grip is good.

I never thought of myself as having big hands, but maybe I do. Even 5/8ths feels too small for me. I printed out that Wilson guide thing and my fingers extend at least 1/4" beyond the 5/8ths mark. I've decided I need to sell all my racquets and get new ones. Ugh!
