It'll be interesting to see how he does on clay.

Can't wait until he doesn't win this title, and that will just show that not only is the poor kid overhyped, but he doesn't belong on the ATP tour just yet. This kid has more pressure on him than any US junior I can think of in history, and I think its only going to hurt him.

He won his first match 1:6,6:0,6:0. Talk about a bad start:rolleyes:

im curious.

He became the #1 junior at the unprecedented early age of 16. He got lots of publicity and got wildcards for ATP-level events, where he proceeded to get clobbered in every single one. And yet he kept getting the wildcards - something like 10 or 11 in total.

Generated lots of talk, on this board it was mostly negative, since he was clearly nowhere near ready for ATP-level play. Was countered by the occasional counterpoint that he's really young and that the results will come eventually.

thanks for that...
what kind of style does he play?
black guy, lefty... is this the guy?
only 5'9... by the look of his pic on ATP website he needs to hit the gym and
BEEF UP.

I saw bits of almost all his matches at the easter bowl im april. he is definately overrated in my opinion. he plays a tiny bit similar to nadal, hits with heavy spin and has a decent all court game. not that much more

He isn't good on clay, ala most Americans these days. I seriously doubt he can make the semis even.

He's a lefty with very flashy strokes. Two-handed backhand, mediocre serve. Very, very quick around the court. He plays a good all-court game, but he doesn't have a certain aspect of his game that stands out (i.e. big serve or forehand).

If he can out think his opponents (ala Martina Hingis) he can make it to the semi's.

Alot of people were on his case because he wasnt giving himself much time, he was trying to rush into pro events before turning 16 when he clearly he was not physicaly equipped to do so.

I was 6'2'' and 172 pounds when I was 17... I don't think he's growing MUCH more than 5'11'' or 6'0''
But he certainly needs to hit the gym, or start eating more... 145 lbs!!??

So what? Most of the spanish clay court experts aren't much bigger than this. Do you think a big brute can be quick and last 5 sets against a tough opponent?

erm... Nadal is 6'1 (185cm).. and 85kg of bruteness....
his demeanor is very much like Muster....
both were strong guys who hit the ball harder than anyone else on clay...
you need to be strong enough to get serious pace AND heavy topspin on the ball when it comes to clay....
hmm, Nadal has 5cm & 10kg over Muster...
so do i think a big brute can be quick and last 5 sets?
yes.

Nadal is an exception. My point is that one does not have to be a big brute to make it as a pro. The following pros are in the top 100 and they're around 160lbs or less:

Alberto Martin 5'9" 162lbs
JC Ferrero 6'0" 160lbs
G. Coria 5'9" 152lbs
N. Davidenko 5'10" 154lbs
O. Rochus 5'5" 130lbs
A. Clement 5'8" 160lbs
R. Schuttler 5'11" 155lbs
:p

These guys still have a "man's strength" if you get what I'm trying to say. Even though these guys may be short, they are very toned, and have strong legs. Kuertan hit the ball extremely hard and he was as scrawny as they come. But he was also tall.

I think Donald's main problem is all the hype surrounding him. I think he has more to work with mentally than anything, but he definitely should add more weight training to his regimen. The problem is, if the kid is still growing, you can't overtrain or else some serious problems could occur for him down the line.

As long as he doesn't dance like Monfils I'm happy

The problem isn't that they need size in order to generate power. The small guys on tour all seem to have what in baseball they call a 'live arm'. Coria isn't a big bloke but the word on him, right through his days as a junior, was that he could generate a lot of power despite having a pretty light-weight build. Woodbridge was 'under size' but he had a kill shot on his forehand. The Rochus brothers are small guys but they can flatten out their shots to generate surprising power. Hewitt isn't a big guy but from the age of 15 he hit a far heavier ball than more guys 10 years older.

Donald Young may well grow and solve his problem that way, however, at the moment he doesn't generate enough penetration or weight on his shots. He's got more 'court smarts' and consistency than the average junior but he doesn't have anything that will routinely hurt the top 50 or top 100 senior players. Consistency and nous are wonderful tools but when there isn't much behind your shots you're starting every match (at the upper levels) way behind the 8 ball.

The hype about Young got a big boost when JMac said that Young's hands are the only ones he saw that are as good as his own.

That is a pretty high compliment, if you know JMac is known to have best hands of all time, the touch. This could very well be true, but Young is just blown away but brute force, no one had a chance to see that touch.

Who says I read it fool? His name is in the thread title.
But now that you mention it, donald might actually beat somebody if his opponents were made to play with a knitting needle instead of a racquet.
OK maybe not, but he might win a set!

But seriously, why does this guy get so much attention round here? He's just another junior who may or may not make it when he becomes an adult, so what? In fact most of them don't.

It's no different than football analysts debating about whether or not the number 1 draft pick has what it takes to do well. Young was that number one pick, so people find it interesting to see how he's doing.

Well I was still hoping someone would be able to give an intelligent answer to my question because, like I said, I don't get it, and as you can see I've asked it twice now.

Hey I was just curious. But If you don't know, then whatever.

I would assume it's because of all the hype surrounding him. Makes sense, doesn't it? Considering that he's supposed to be the US' next big thing.
