I think it has something to do with violent bowel movements...explosive diarrhea?

I wore one when I sprained my ankle for support. Now that I've sprained my other ankle, I'll start wearing one again. But basically it's for some extra support.

Some people have said that it gives them that feeling of security and that they can go all out without worrying as much. Thats how it makes me feel at least.

Bracing actually has been shown, in studies, to have two effects. This is from my Sports Physiotherapist while he was lecturing at a Level 1 Netball coaching course:

1. The physical support that we all know about - and the reason that 99% of people strap / tape / brace.

2. A neurological / muscle support. This is a subconscious effect, in that the body is 'aware' of the bracing, and the bracing 'reminds' the body that there is an injury-potential in that area, and thus this awareness may mean that the body protects itself via limiting or controlling movement in that area. I'm paraphrasing here, but hopefully you get the idea.

From memory, he said the effects are actually about 50-50 to each of the above!

I wore one for about 6 months after I stepped on a ball running down a wide forehand. Damn near broke my ankle. Can't repeat what I said at the time. I'll occcasionally still wear it if I've played a lot and the ankle is a bit tender/tired. Its a kind of security blanket.

it's almost like asking the question, "why put a cast on a broken arm?"

more people use ankle braces because they injured their ankle(s) or have really weak joints and are putting too much pressure on them.

Slightly OT, but what about taping vs. ankle brace? (+ / -) Saw Rafa was taped at the FO yesterday rather than braced.

I think all pros tape their ankles, injured or not. When not injured the taping is lighter, I suppose.
