The newest rankings... Mario Ancic made it to top 10 !
A great way to start the grass season...he's only 35 points away from Robredo, so I think it won't be long till he climbs even higher.
What do you think his chances are at Wimby? I think the most noticable change from Ancic 05 is that he became more mentally tough.
And we've seen what mental toughness can do...so I expect Mario to go far in Wimby.

1st Federer , R. 7035
2nd Nadal , R. 4545
3rd Nalbandian , D. 3360
4th Ljubicic , I. 3055
5th Roddick , A. 2380
6th Davydenko , N. 2195
7th Blake , J. 1945
8th Robredo , T. 1920
9th Ancic , M. 1885
10th Gaudio , G. 1745

(Man...we're a country of 5 million inhabitants...and we've got the equal number of top 10 players as Argentina,USA and Spain..I'm so proud of our guys!!!)

What can I say? Being a croatian tennis fan, I'm equally proud as you, CroSen... or mislav, or pero, or Ivanisevic.

Now, because everyone talks about: "wait until the grass/hard/carpet season starts, and his ranking will go up as hell". How did Mario performed last year on grass? Is he defending some points? Was he injured?
I'm expecting (or wishing!??) Mario to become Top5 after a good run at Wimbledon... and Ivo a Top30 :)

Btw, he's not playing Halle nor Queen's ... so no points there

So, what else!? Congratulations!!!!

So..Mario on grass 2005:

QUEENS- lost at R16 to Gasquet (jeez..how did that happen!?)

s'-HERTOGENBOSCH- won the tourney (d. Llodra)

WIMBLEDON- lost at R16 to Feli Lopez (in 3 easy sets...Mario,Mario)

So..I guess he has quite a lot to defend..but I'm confident he has the game for it as well.

Let's check Mario's Activity last year on grass:

London / Queen's Club, England
International Series, 6-Jun-05, O, Grass , Draw: 56

R64 Bye, () N/A
R32 Hernych, Jan (CZE) 75 6-4 6-4
R16 Gasquet, Richard (FRA) 29 5-7 6-1 3-6

's-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands
International Series, 13-Jun-05, O, Grass , Draw: 32

R32 Logtens, Paul (NED) 286 6-4 6-2
R16 Arthurs, Wayne (AUS) 86 6-4 7-6(1)
Q Bjorkman, Jonas (SWE) 112 6-1 3-6 6-3
S Hernych, Jan (CZE) 77 6-4 6-4
W Llodra, Michael (FRA) 65 7-5 6-4

Wimbledon, England
Grand Slam, 20-Jun-05, O, Grass , Draw: 128

R128 Summerer, Tobias (GER) 178 6-3 7-5 6-1
R64 Udomchoke, Danai (THA) 161 7-6(6) 3-6 6-3 6-3
R32 Monfils, Gael (FRA) 83 6-3 6-3 6-1
R16 Lopez, Feliciano (ESP) 33 4-6 4-6 2-6

So, he defends R32 in Queen's (not playing), Championship in Netherlands (mmm), and 4th round in Wimby.

That sounds a little tougher now

Is it true??

So far that kind of info wasn't publicized in any Cro media (and they are always the 1st ones to pass info on our players)...so I doubt it is true.

He isn't playing this week to rest and prepare better for defending the title at Ordina open, and to play Wimby.

And Poland has a population of almost 40 million and noone in the top hundred of the ATP... How's that fair? :D

But one thing I must admit is that when I was on vacation in Croatia I was really impressed (and upset, as I did not have my racquet with me nor anyone apt to the game) by the number of tennis courts in each and every little town! Good job you guys! :)

Cool. I want Roddick and Blake to do well on hardcourt this year. I also like the work ethics of Robredo and Ancic. These guys have worked hard and improved alot.

Why is Andy at #5?

He's at #5 because making the finals of Wimbledon is much more impressive than getting to R16 on a consistent basis. If he doesn't defend those points, bye bye Andy.

And people slip in and out of the top 10 all the time, but grass is much better suited to Ancic than clay, so he might be staying in the top 10 for a while.

Anyhow, Croatians could do more if they also bring into their tennis base-line skills.

Otherwise, after Ivanicevic set-up tradition ( he is very tall and he is S&V mainly) Ljubicic and Ancic are also tall and mainly S&V. Ljubicic last 1 year substantially improved his base-line game and strokes.

Anyhow it seems to me that if they start learning this from childhood yr tennis can become even stronger.

A lot will defend on Ancic's performance at Wimbledon. If he can get to the quarters or semis (which he might), it'll make up for whatever he does or doesn't do at the warmup tournaments this season.
