Against someone, if you've got both on hand. An opponent's wilyer. Not sure of my spelling there...

Wilyer? What's that?

Well, the wall is really just angles and spin, and becomes pretty predictable. It's good if you want to move yourself around, because there's no real "Out," and it's good if you need to work on your mechanics, but that's it. There's no real strategy, the wall only gives you the ball back, whereas people have idiosynchrisies. You can learn not only your technique, but you can learn to spot weaknesses and strengths, and you can learn to deal with things that you can't yet, and you can learn so many things that a wall can't offer. Walls are just consistent.

No no no. I was asking what's better for criticising.. Wall or player. I'm guess player because USTA ratings are really based on ability to hit different parts of the court with consistency not hitting a ball back and forth off a wall.

I'll post some soon, i'll just edit the thread. Which would be more useful playing against someone or against a wall?
With someone else because a wall makes the ball come back too soon.

Ohhh, I understand better now, Duzza. Sorry for my confusion. I think that, in my experience, a player is better, because off the wall by my school's courts, I tend to over hit the ball, so that it'll come back easier, and hitting the ball as hard as you can, it tends to have bad form a lot of the time.

Well, after 5 mins of filming it was taken over by 55 seconds of other filming. I'll post it as soon as my older bro gets home and captures it onto the computer.
PS: the guy im playing isn't too strong.

Well, USTA ratings are REALLY based on match scores. The computer can't see how pretty your form is. Give us 10 scores against USTA computer rated players and we can tell you what your rating is.

Then why would you want a rating that is only useful for playing social leagues and tournaments in the US? There is an international rating system out there that actually does rate only on strokes, not on match play. Anyone remember where that is online?

I'm down the other end just so ya know playing my bro.

By the looks of your serve and how you handled that high ball to your forehand you are right near or on the 4.0 level. Obviously, the camera angle, your opponent, and how few balls you hit could alter this up or down.

Your shoulder rotation is very slow during your serve motion. I think you need to work on getting a much faster rotation through the use of your body and your non-dominant arm.

I'm new to this board but not new to tennis. And what Bungalo Bill said is right on exactly.

What do you mean increase the speed of my shoulder rotation? How do i do this?

You can throw your hips more into the ball which will help you do this. Its a good way to transfer your weight into the ball.

When you coil back and the racquet drops, you also want to have a twisting feeling in your stomach. In other words, you dont just want to arch you back only.

When you go up and after the ball make more of a stronger effort to really hit that ball with a loose arm and having your non-dominant arm come in. The non-dominant arm acts as a braking mechanism which allows your hitting arm to accelerate forward.

Look at Sampras and study his legs and how he uses them. As he brings his foot forward and as he goes up, watch his front leg, it stretches out at the hip for a brief moment that is diffcult to see and the pressure is forced over this leg is lifted up. I realize it is a "flat" serve.

http://www.uspta.com/html/e-lesson-Flat%20serve.swf

I dont see enough lower body effort helping accelerate your shoulder rotation. Think of your entire body as rubber bands that work together. You stretch one and it releases to the other, then the next stretches and releases and so on.

You want to generate power from your front stretch and your push off from the ground.

Your shoulder rotation is very slow during your serve motion. I think you need to work on getting a much faster rotation through the use of your body and your non-dominant arm.True, which is likely the main reason as to why his first serve (what I assume to be his first serve) isn't very fast, for a guy that can hit a FH fairly well.

That first serve would be an okay 2nd serve. Against high level players though, that second serve would be creamed. Opponents would just eat those up.

Anyways, his serve motion appears to be fluid and all, but like you mentioned, the rotation is slow. I think that maybe he is guiding the ball into the box, which is what is disallowing the more springing uncoiling action.

hard to say, not many long ralleys , but i am guessing 3.5 at best, next time try to get a 3rd person to hold the camera and rally some, hit 10 forehands in a row, then 10 back hands , volley some, serve some...etc.....

What's highest grade pennant player have you ever beaten? Where do you feel competive at? i.e 50% w/l record.

I played a competive losing match this year in an open tournament to two guys (#450 in aus) who're now struggling in grade 2.

I've taken sets and ocassionally win against a grade 3 #5 friend.

Ok you play for dendy right? Go watch kots and wesley, they're 5.5 players.
When kots was 15-16 squading he was probably 4.5ish standard, he's improved greatly.

You're decent but your shots put you out of position (movement is suspect) and the first power shot you hit -- too much in the middle. You'd get passed if you played someone better heh.

More than anything; how consistent are you? Can you sustain 100 shot rallies on both sides without running around to hit the forehand. All hitting nearly the same shot.

i think this is 4.0. someone said 3.0-3.5.. come on.. that is not 3.0 footwork and that is not 3.5 consistency.

duzza, u need to go more shoulder to shoulder on your forehand. thats the only thing i noticed.

also, y hit everything dtl?

i would say a 3.0 - 3.5.
If you played another 3.5er, you'd get creamed.
I believe you have the mechanics to be a 5.0, but right now, you lack power on groundies, and you'd never really get a chance to play the shots you showed on the clip because your serve would have you running around in defence mode all day.

Wow reading back on this is very interesting, and funny too. Equinox, your last post included Wes and Kots, I filled in for their team twice in the summer at no. 4 and 3 and won both times in Singles. They are clearly better players than me, but 5.5's?

Nah the video was old, very old. I had my brother feeding balls to me. I might have it on my other computer, I'll put it back if I can, but I don't think I was that good back then... But I'm not going to agree with the ratings you give, because ...wow I've seen some funny things on these boards.
