Serving speeds at Wimbledon this year seem a bit lower
than I expected. Fastest serves of matches are mostly
120's or barely around 130. Roddick, Rubicic mid-to high
130. I thought Roddick hit 130's regularly but it's more like
120's most of time. Strange thing is Federer's serving speeds
didn't really change....

Average speed within the Top 20 servers has been 133mph - but the standard of serves....well, I still haven't seen anyone come along and serve mid-to-late 120s with a combination of 'heaviness', control, precision and confidence since Sampras.

We know roddick isnt hitting his 140 bombs or anything...someone said he was putting a lot of spin on the ball instead...just using a slower paced serve with alot of action

Mac said Roger has been working out a bit more to add a few Mph to his serve. So that would explain why his speed hasn't changed.

How can you know this unless you've actually returned Sampras' serve along with the serves of the current pros?

roddick will probably start to hit in the high 130s-140s in the 2nd week, if he makes it, which i think he will

Robert Kendrick has a pimpish serve. It looked much heavier than the radar gun would have indicated.

Yeah, what he needs is variety. His serves are somewhat predictable.
Look how Federer is returning them with ease and even out-ace him.

Don't they open the balls the day before to slow down the big servers?

I don't know exactly how the speed of the serve is measured.

But does the surface matter at all? Doesn't the radar gun just aim at the server and measure the speed before the ball bounces?

Most radar guns are aimed at the point of contact and when the gun gets a clean return signal, probably within the first ten feet of the ball's flight or so, it'll show that speed. However, in that ten feet, the ball will slow down about 4 MPH, so you never get the actual fastest speed the ball travels.

As I recall, Wimbledon last year publically announced
they won't do it gain in the future..

Yeah, because Tim Henman cried about it.

Well a fastish serve is harder to return on grass as it stays low roddick is obviously going for a high % of first serves i suppose so has taken a bit off speed.

The testament of pretty much every pro-player from 1993-2002?
Plus the fact that nearly all big-servers today have nothing but sheer speed...and ***** results to back it up.

That's how I know this.

Specially those guys Ljubicic and Ancic, being ridiculous Top10...
Results isn't just titles, you know...

Ok - they're fairly consistent, I guess.
