I was just looking at the serving speed stats and found this interesting. In men, the hard servers are less well-known players but it is an exact opposite for women players. Check it out...

Any reason for this?

Does this by any way show that serving speed is alot more important for women then men?

No, it shows that men are a lot more powerful than women. This stat shows absolutely nothing about the importance of the serve for either sex.

I don't think Mattek, Perry, & Sprem are "well-known" players.

But overall, I think it shows why womens tennis has so little depth. Outside of the top 20, not many women have big serves. Thats why you see so many 60,60 scores. The top women are playing a different sport than the rest of the tour. They just have so much more power.

even unknown male players have big serves & can hold serve enough to trouble higher ranked players.

In one of the womens matches today, there average m.p.h was around 112. Nadal's was 118 or something. I thought that was interesting.

You're not a tennis fan.. I know every single player in both list.

The men's list isnt too hard.

I reckon that the top 4 are definitely "well known players". Whats not well known about them?

Notice how not one of the Men is still in the draw, while 4 of the women are.

That Labadze has a great serve. But Gilbert and Enberg kept making fun of him for being fat.

Average ranking for men was 67.15, Women was 92.05. You're point?

Ancic is still in the draw though he faces Fed in the next round.

What I think both lists do reflect are the eliminated players abilities, or relative lack thereof, to return consistently well.

You have to consider the spin.

i am just saying that serve speed doesnt seem to be a huge factor in men, while women it does have some corrolation to result that is noted. maybe the standard deviation is alot smaller for ATP vs. WTA.

just wondering, was kind of curious by it

Yeah, I guess. But it is still a pretty high average for the women. But your right about the spin.

Of all the women servers, i think that sharapova has the best overall serve
even though she doesn't have the fastest. she's proof that serving effectiveness is as much about placement as speed.

and i also like that her 2nd serve is almost as powerful as her first. venus on the otherhand, has the fastest serve but a terrible second serve and her placement is just ok.

Mahut's second serve speed against Fed was pretty ridiculous avg 113 and a few in the 120's with only five dbfaults. Mac added he was basically hitting 2 first serves, didn't matter as Fed blocked backed some that were in the upper 120's for clean winners.

Roddick hit a second serve that was in the 130's against Fed in the 2004 Wimbledon Final.

You totally missed the point, the fact that men are a lot more powerful than women is a given.
He's not comparing men's serve speeds against womens serve speeds, he's comparing the success level of the fastest men against the success level of the fastest women.
I think it's an interesting point.
