During the Mauresmo-Sharapova match, John McEnroe touched on the World Cup soccer match since France is in the final and Mauresmo is French. He mentioned the famous soccer player Zinedine Zidane and his comeback to the team, but mispronounced his last name to sound like Zi - Dane. I guess Zidane is one of those names that's easy to butcher .

Actually, as a youngster, Mac was a fairly accomplished soccer player.

I guess McEnroe is not much of a soccer fan but his pronounciation of Zidane is not surprising considering his past behavior.

I have to admit that it was 3am here this moring when I watched that match but I didn't think that was J Mac doing the call. Were you watching on ESPN2?

Actually the match was televised twice. On NBC it was Carillo/McEnroe/Robinson. Great match. Great tournament.

Wait a second! You're telling me John McEnroe (pronounced Mic-En-row) mispronouned a name?!?! What an idiot (eye-dee-oat).

When will he learn?

What do you mean by that?

In my original post I said that McEnroe probably isn't much of a soccer fan, but then I changed it a bit. I think he probably was just being himself. Zidane is a pretty well known guy in the sports world.

I heard that too and thought to myself that the irony is that Zidane is about as big in Europe as Michael Jordan is, well in Europe, the US, and dang it, the whole world in fact. Surely no European commentator would ever refer to #23 as "Jour-Daine".
All I've ever heard is that Johnny Mac is a jerk. I heard a story about him telling a ball-boy in Key Biscayne to f*** off about 30 years ago. Normally I wouldn't believe this sort of thing, but the guy is my neighbor, a millionaire, and could care less what I think about him. Granted, we're tennis friends, but he would never BS me, he has too much pride and nothing to gain from it.

And this being said, yes, I would grovel to play with or even chat with Johnny Mac. I would ask him about Key Biscayne though.
