Why can't he just say he is tired and not come up with a fake injury.

that is horrible! But to note, that article is the shortest article ever. Seems a bit *strange* to me at this point.

He has a gf now. I don't buy "the problems" with with his hand excuse.

No, not injured. That's just how withdrawals are done these days, alas. Please don't start moaning about how the long tennis season is causing too many injuries.

This doesn't help his fanboys who insist that Rafa will take over the #1 ranking spot pretty soon. He'll lose some points not defending his championship.

He WAS just in a car wreck ... maybe he has some minor injury ...

Many professional athletes play with pain and injuries that would compel many of us to call in sick from work. Is Nadal hurt? Certainly. Could he play thru it? Probably. Is it worth it? Obviously not.

Wouldn't be surprised if he is injured. The way he whips his forehand, the hand and wrist just weren't made to take the kind of punishment that extreme rotation and force that he consistently puts on it.

Then again, if I'd just played two Grand Slam finals in a row I'd probably call in sick as well

Seems like he’s “injured” an awful lot...

He will be losing a minimal amount of points.

He obviously isn't injured, but there is no reason he needs to be playing on clay anyways.

With the rest he will have, he could perform better in Cincy and USO, where he had poor results last year, and gain many points this way.

He knows what he's doing.

I think Team Nadal is just trying to make better decisions than last year. They didn't expect his deep runs on grass...
They have said all year that their special goals were to be better prepared for the USO and for Shanghai. He is already qualified for Shanghai, and his #2 ranking is very solid. So spending some time at the beach with his girlfriend is probably the best idea. Plus he says he is going to EuroDisney with the family. EuroDisney?

He needs a break otherwise he'll come to the US open and Cinci in bad form and not do well.
