Serena Williams Hits The Practice Courts, Draws Myskina First Round
MASON – July 15, 2006 – As Serena Williams was hitting the Lindner Family Tennis Center practice courts for the first time, she was given one of the toughest opening round opponents, as the main draw ceremony took place Saturday at the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open.

Williams, who has had to take nearly six months off the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour due to a left knee injury, is making her return to professional competition this week at the $175,000, Tier III event, and looked very sharp as she practiced on an outside court with mother and coach, Oracene, at her side. In returning to the Tour, the 24-year-old American brings back one of the great talents of our time, one that has taken her to seven Grand Slam singles titles and the No.1 ranking, among numerous other accomplishments.

Unseeded at this event, Williams will have to be at her best in her opening match, however, as she faces the tournament's No.2 seed, Anastasia Myskina. Myskina, currently ranked No.11, has also had a lot of success on the world's biggest tennis stages, winning the French Open in 2004 and rising to the No.2 ranking later that year. After a somewhat disappointing beginning to this season, the 25-year-old Russian has been in solid form as of late, winning 14 of her last 18 matches, her most impressive showing being a runner-up finish at Eastbourne, upsetting Svetlana Kuznetsova before falling to Justine Henin-Hardenne in a third set tie-break.

The match between Williams and Myskina is just one of many intriguing first round encounters lined up for Monday and Tuesday in Cincinnati. Stay tuned for more on the upcoming excitement.

You are one of her fans right! You really like Serena don't you. What inspires you about her? She has lost weight, hasn't she. Anyone can tell, go pull a picture up from the AO and it's clear as day she's lost weight. She's practicing in a long Sleeve shirt buddy, shirts move when you hit the ball. Look at those legs, compare these pictures to the AO-Major Difference!

I don't yet expect her to beat Myskina.
But hopefully she will be a contender again in the slams next year.
It would be sad if a great talent like her were at the end of the road already while just being 24 years old.

Serena eager to get back
Tennis star plays Tuesday in Mason in her first match since January.

By John Boyle

Staff Writer

MASON | Sleeping in until noon was fun and all, but eventually, Serena Williams was eager to return to the tennis court.

After a 5½-month layoff because of a knee injury, the seven-time Grand Slam champion and former No. 1 player in the world will do just that Tuesday night in the Western & Southern Women's Open.

"I'm really excited to be back," Williams said. "I feel like a kid in a candy store. I feel like I have no pressure on me. ... I feel good."

Williams will meet second-seeded Anastasia Myskina, a former French Open champion, at 7 p.m. at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason. Williams, the former top-ranked player in the world who has slipped to No. 140, is unseeded in the 32-player field.

"Anastasia's a good player," said Williams, who leads the all-time series 4-0. "We've had some really good matches. At some point you're going to have to play (top-seeded players). Why not now?"

Williams' last match came in January at the Australian Open when she lost to Daniela Hantuchova in the third round. Williams has played only 31 matches since the start of the 2005 season.

Besides getting her knee right — she returned too early from surgery in August 2003 and never fully recovered — Williams used the time away to recharge mentally from the grind of training and playing.

"It was mentally draining," said Williams, who ended the 2002 campaign ranked No. 1. "I was training too much and so focused on going out there without recovering from my injury. For me, it was definitely the wrong thing to do.

"The time off was awesome," she added. "I didn't wake up until noon every day. For 22 years, I was waking up at 7 or 8 (a.m.). It was great to wake up with no agenda."

Williams' agenda includes tennis again. After meeting with the media for about 25 minutes Sunday, she practiced in sweltering conditions — on-court temperature readings were pushing triple digits — for about an hour on Center Court under the watchful eye of her mother and coach, Oracene.

im one of the few on this board that has ever met serena and seen her face to face. it was this past halloween on my birthday. we were at a club called plush in los angeles. paris hilton was there as well.

my girlfriend went up and took some photos of paris with her camera phone, she was very cool about and looked much hotter in person than i photos. then came serena in her nurses outfit.

she looked like a linebacker and was not buff in the slightest she also told my girlfriend that she didnt want her picture taken very rudely. she thinks she is some kind of freakin' diva/model/fashion designer/actress. all she is and every will be is a tennis player who better get her ample arse back in shape or her time will pass her by.

its just as well my GF didnt take her photo with her phone as she would have needed a wide angle lens anyway...

18 JULY 2006

She's not been seen on a tennis court for seven months, but the former number one is clearly back in shape after a well-earned sabbatical. As she frolicked in the surf this week, Serena Williams showed off her famously honed physique and the rippling muscles that give her one of the most powerful serves in the game.
The 24-year-old looked red-hot in a halter-neck bikini as she cooled off in the waves at Malibu beach. Known for her love of fashion as well as tennis, she accessorised with a pair of large ethnic-style earrings. A seven-time Grand Slam winner, she is now keen to get back in the sporting spotlight after a long absence, making her return on Tuesday with a tournament in Cincinnati.

After taking insufficient time to recover from an operation on her left knee in 2003, the star decided she needed some proper rest and rehabilitation, while admitting she also needed it for herself, mentally. "I was going through a lot of stuff in my life, a lot more than everyone would know," she says. "This is something I should have done a few years ago."

Going shopping in Hollywood and waking up late gave the tennis prodigy some time to herself, "It was awesome for once to wake up at noon with no agenda. I was pretty much on Rodeo (Drive) every day." But since March she's been itching to get back to the courts and "worked out every day" with the results of her hard work clearly visible.

Despite slipping to 140 in the world rankings, if the latest pictures are anything to go by her opponents will be more than a little concerned. Her older sister and on-court competitor Venus recently had nothing but high praise for her sibling during an interview at Wimbledon. "I only play women's doubles with Serena," she said. "Once you've played with her you don't want to play with anyone else. She's awesome."

Serena hits courts. Courts not happy.

Kidding. She a big, fine woman. She can back that thing up.
And I'm glad she's playing well again.

I just hope she plays smarter tennis than before, moves in, uses the angles and the volleys and hopefully moves better too.
Welcome back 'rena!

I was only saying that b/c someone posted she would lose 6-2, 7-6 or something like that.

I can't argue that she does not have a chance to return to form, and a shot/ a chance to return to the top 10 or so.
The results of this match speak for themselves, but it is just painful to watch her- she ain't just built like a truck- she is the truck factory; Man is she scary. I mean, she reminds me that Spring Training photo of Barry Bonds, just with a (slightly) better wig- then she talks.

... SERENA WILLAMS IS THE BEST FEMALE PLAYER IN THE WORLD, WHETHER SHE IS #1 OR #500.I'm pleased to see Serena's comeback. I believe she *could* be the one to surpase Court or Navratilova for the Female GOAT prize.

But, please! If someone is ranked #500, they are NOT the "best" ... they are 500th. Let's have a little reason in this discussion....

SPOTLIGHT ON TENNIS
Serena returns with a flourishBY MICHELLE KAUFMAN
mkaufman@MiamiHerald.com
It took exactly 10 minutes Tuesday night for Serena Williams to let the tennis world know she's back and out for blood.

''Devastated'' that her ranking plummeted to No. 139 during her six-month injury absence, Williams overwhelmed 11th-ranked Anastasia Myskina with a quick 3-0 lead and had her serve flying at 126 mph in the first 10 minutes of her comeback match in Cincinnati.

''I hope to go out and blow the joint up,'' the former world No. 1 said before the tournament. ``I have no pressure on me. I have nowhere to go but up.''

Those were sweet words to Nick Bollettieri's ears.

Williams trained with tennis guru Bollettieri at his Bradenton academy for two weeks during the French Open. She was eager to whip herself back into shape and prove wrong the pundits who were sure the 24-year-old had ballooned beyond repair and given up tennis to pursue acting, fashion design and parties.

''It was all about getting her confidence back,'' said Bollettieri, who has worked on and off with Williams throughout her career. ``There was no question in my mind that she could do it. It was about getting accustomed to hitting balls again and feeling like she wants to play. You can't force this on anyone. I hear people saying she'll turn 35 and regret this or that. It's her decision whether she wants to play or not, but if she has that desire, she could be the best ever to strike a tennis ball.''

Williams was out of shape when she arrived for her first week of training, Bollettieri said. ''With a layoff that long, things do go astray,'' he said. But by the second week, she was getting back to her old self, smashing the ball against male hitting partners.

''She was really into it by the end,'' he said. ``With the strength she has, and those keen eyes, she can regain her form faster than most. I think it's a great boost for tennis to have her back and a great thing for Serena, too. She's hungry again, so watch out.''

Bollettieri said Williams plans to return to Bradenton in August and train for the U.S. Open. ''All she needs is a little success to build on, and it can be just like old times,'' he said.

But there was a time when Serena aimed for the top spot.
And not only at surpassing Court and Navratilova ....

you racist mofo.Tell that to the William's sister's father who has repeatedly played the race card on the WTA, USTA, their sponsors, and others. Who repeatedly claimed "race" as a motive impeding his daughter's careers.

Its not racism.

Its called blowback for the old man playing that low game against the hallowed institutions of tennis in America.

yeah.... nothing like racism to end all racism. you racist, uneducated, ignorant mofo.

you: "its not racism, its just me saying something racist because the other guy did"

how can you justify that crap? the hallowed institutions in tennis??? because richard is the father of the williams sisters, did you need to stoop to his level and attack his daughters with your racist comments? and i say "stoop" because richard williams is a person who talks without thinking and has a tendency to verbally attack people and not the ideals they have. that's you too. you're no different than the person you insult. you qualify as a HUGE racist mofo.

you qualify as a HUGE racist mofo.Feel better yet? LOL

Its not racism to identify a man playing the race card and manipulating institutions of tennis using race as his weapon.

Its simply stating well observed, and well chronicled behavior on his part.

I am just calling the spade a spade. What would you call it? A concerned father looking out for the interests of his daughters? LOL That's a lot of spin to justify that guys behavior.

I choose to despise the Williams sisters and their game because of this not because they are black or any other reason.

None the less I do not think they got to these level because of affirmative action… Though affirmative active is a whole different debate that should not have started in this thread.
