continental grip

when shoudl i use continental grip? i hear i shoudl use it for serves? i usually use an eastern grip for everything, explain to me plz, thanks

Pretty much in todays tennis the continental grip is used for 1st serves and second serves. It is also a good volley grip for both backhand and forehand sides. Sometimes players will use the continental grip to hit their topspin backhands for several reasons:

1. They like to hit the ball later

2. They have a strong forearm to control the head of the racquet.

3. They want a flatter more pentrating shot.

4.. They dont have to worry about the racquet coming sqaure with the ball too late at contact.

And of course the continental grip is a good grip to slice with on the backhand side.

It will take some getting used to. Try serving and volleys with the grip first. On my second serve I use more of an extreme grip where my hand is over even more.

I use it for first serves and more of an eastern backhand grip for second serves. Good grip for volleys too.

The continental grip is the most versatile one. If you were to have your hand glued to your racquet to force you to play with one grip, the Continental would be the way to go. Back in the days of wood racquets, lots of people hit most of their shots with a Continental. The pace and spin OS and stiff graphite racquets can put on a ball killed the Continental for most FH groundstrokes, imo.
