Although it wasn't the best rivalry for Gabriela. They had many great matches. The artist talent of Gaby against the mental talent and agression from Steffi. Gaby had a ''Nadal-esque winning record against Steffi in the US.''

There is almost 20 years between the pics.

Gaby Sabatini had (in the women's field) the same tactics against Steffi as Nadal has against Federer today.

She would attack Graf on the backhand side with high topspinballs and she retrieved a lot of balls which were normally winners for Steffi. Of course the power of Nadal or Federer can not be compared to Sabatini or Graf, the matches looked similar though. Until 1989, Steffi Graf played a lot more topspinbackhands and volleys against Gaby and was not one-dimensional, which she became later.

Steffi, Like Federer does now, retreated more to the slice. Grass was the surface Gaby never beat Steffi, but hardcourt and clay were sometimes difficult matches for Steffi as it is with Roger against Rafael. The difference between the two couples is the mental part. Gaby had difficulty closing out matches, Rafael doesn't. Roger gets nervous against a Nadal, Steffi never visibly got nervous against any opponent and was very intimidating in the late 80s.

Graf choked away a lot of matches against Sabatini in the early 90ies.

I hate to admit it but it was true in the US tournaments against Sabatini.

Gabby was one of the players who exploited Graf's weakness by playing her backhand a lot to which Graf ran around opening the other side then Gabby would eventually hit down the line. Anyways, I know Gabby lookied masculine on TV but I got to see her at the US Open up close and she was stunning. Her body wasn't as big as they appear on the tube and very nice facial features. One of the prettiest I have seen.

early in their careers, sabatini gave a lot of trouble to graf because of her high looping topspins, as stated above. in 1988 and 1989, graf lost only 5 times, 3 of those were to sabatini. many of steffi's victories over gaby were 3 setters (this was at a time when graf won most of her matches in straight sets). it's true that sabatini had a weird winning record over graf in the US, particularly in the state of florida (they had several tournaments in florida at that time).

in 1990-91, sabatini suddenly learned how to serve and volley and this was the time when she was most successful over graf. she beat steffi at the us open 1990 and won 6 of their next 9 matches. in addition to her topspins from the baseline, she also used slices, drop shots and well-timed net rushes, very similar to what we saw from mauresmo at this year's wimbledon.

but sabatini was never able to follow up on her us open win and never beat any of the great players anymore when it mattered most. the turning point may have been the 1991 wimbledon final when gaby served for the match twice but was beaten 8-6 in the 3rd by graf. sabatini was also never able to even get to number 2 in the world (graf was the only one who was getting close in the rankings to monica seles at that time). after her wimbledon loss, there were other high-profile collapses. most notable was that famous match at the 1993 french open when she led mary joe fernandez 6-1,5-1 40-15 but still ended up losing 10-8 in the 3rd.

Both looked better at 20, 22.
But of course they look better as mid-30's women than those Willys, Shraps or Momos ever will.

Graf really grew into her look. A lot of people used to make fun of her big nose, but I'm glad she didn't have a nose job. She really looks great.

Sabatini looks great too.

Back then they suffered from 80's hair.

Has anyone ever looked more like the spawn of her mother and father as Graf? Both parents are instantly recognizeable in her.

Grad and Sabatini were basically friendly with each other off court, right?

Well, when they played doubles in the 80ies Sabatini wasn't fluent in English so their communication was rather limited ...

But today they get along very well and even played some exhibitions in the last years. And they are said to speak by phone now and then. Sabatini chose Graf to introduce her to the U.S. Hall of Fame.

In the left pic, you can see Gaby's racket. That one played quite nice. I miss yamaha. I miss Sabatini too. Towards the end, her serve just got so painful to watch. I saw a few that were 40 mph range... Such a sad contrast to her former self.

suffered being the understatement of it!

But yeah those were good days...it's what first got me interested in tennis! lol
Ironically, now I can't bear the womens game.

Thanks for the pics warriorroger! I'd forgotten they had played doubles so successfully ;).

Do you think your Fed/Rafa - Steffi/Sabatini analogy could be used to argue why Roger and Nadal would also be a good doubles team?

Sabatini was a more complete allround player than Graf. It was a mistake, that early in her career, her coaches tried to make her a second Vilas. When she took Carlos Kirmayr as coach in 1990 and played more serve and volley, she troubled Graf. She attacked Graf on her weaker bh side, and volleyed away her own backhand volley. She should have won Wimbledon in 1991, but on 3O all and 6-5 in last set, she took a volley, which would have sailed out.She also had some gloroius matches with Seles, including a Masters final at MSG, which went 5 sets. Her weak serve was her biggest handicap. With Ivanovics serve, she would have won 3 Wimbies.

Agree, she had a beatiful game, more of a ball artist than Graf. Besides a serve, they should have worked on the mental aspect of her game, but boy her matches with Graf were a thing of beauty. Nice to see the shots from Sabatini against the power and movement of Graf. Yeah, I miss them.

They would be even more succesfull. Steffi and Gaby have always been friends, but in their early years not great communicators. They played doubles as two single players. BUt the Wimbledon final was a thing of beauty. Two different styles, yet two great atletes, just like Roger and Rafael.

Gabygave Seles complications at times as well with her stylistic game. In some ways Sabatini reminded me of Goolagong. Comfortable at any part of the court, with unlimited variety but mental fragility in really big matches.
