I remember watching Andrew Ilie playing some great shots in 2001 at the Australian Open when he beat JCF and Youzhny before losing to Agassi in the round of 16. He also beat Sampras that year. According to atptennis, he stopped playing after 2003. What happened to him? Was he injured?

He was injured in a terrible accident trying to rip off his shirt after a match in Cincinnati in 2003. He tore a ligament in his elbow and had to have Tommy John surgery and has never been the same.

Man, so much swamp land for sale these days :D

But here I am with Andrew in Nice in 1999. He was indeed a gentleman, with a great forehand.

I don't even know if he's playing Challengers at the moment. Last I heard he was taking an indefinite lay off.

Yeah, could that pic be any smaller? Hey, can I borrow someone's microscope? Zing!

Anywho, was Andrew Illie's nickname 'The Kobra'? Or am I thinking of someone else?

He got fat. Saw him play at the US Open qualies and he was swinging for the fences and he had a huge belly. I know he was known for his risky style of play but when you're that out of shape it comes off looking like an act of desperation going for a winner on every shot.

At one time I remember hearing that Andrew was the guy that all the other male pros went out of their way to watch. He was like Gonzo with flatter shots, just going nuts. I bet he would be popular on the senior tour if they let him in. Not sure how old he is...
