Thiemo De Bakker, the world's #1 junior and 2006 wimbledon boys' junior champion, is playing his first atp level tourny this week at the Dutch Open after he received a wild card. His first round opponent is 2006 Rolland Garros quarterfinalist Julien Benneteau. Can this be the start of the next great player on the atp tour? any thoughts?

Thiemo de Bakker is not good enough to reach the top rankings.

He'll probably lose to Benneteau. Benneteau is on a totally different level from any junior De bakker has played.

hahahaha, de bakker just owned benneteau 6-3, 6-3. even marin cilic went down today to some unknown argentinian 6-3, 6-1. i would not underestimate de bakker's skills on any level. if any of you have ever seen him play, you'll be able to see why. this kid is intense.

Only goes to show how much posters in this thread know about tennis :D

Just because Donald Young sucks doesn't mean that all juniors do as well.

de bakker's next match is vs. marc gicquel (guy who took kiefer to an insane fifth set at rolland garros and raised interest in the technifibre red code string). if he beats gicquel who happens to be a fairly solid clay-courter, he's more than likely going to have to play djokovic which should be interesting to say the least.

oh and sam querrey lost to gonzo 6-3, 6-4

His forehand reminds me a bit of Grosjean´s.

Bogie,

Could you please describe de Bakker's game? Since he is Dutch, I am picturing a 6'5, 195 pounds, Marat Safin-type of big hitter? Is Thiemo an all court player or does he just pound the ball from the baseline? Does he have a big serve?

western grip on the forehand. very solid eastern two-handed backhand that he pounds away at from everywhere on court. very consistent player and doesn't make very many unforced errors at all. i guess the best way to describe him would be one of the harder hitting counter-punchers. very quick around the court for such a tall, lengthy guy (i think he's somewhere around 6'2 and hes very skinny). when he gets a chance, he takes the offensive very well hitting big, heavy groundstrokes and can play the court from all the angles. has basically every shot in the book and hits quite a fair share of dropshots. doesn't come to net very much and prefers the baseline but when at net, he has decent volleys and can put them away(pretty much only comes to net when on the offensive; definitely not a serve & volleyer). i think his game very closely resembles that of paul-henri mathieu or novak djokovic(forehand, backhand, and serve are all very similar for all 3 guys). his serve can get up in the 110's range but he usually keep its in between 105-115 for his first, and about 95-100 mph for his second. in my opinion, he's probably the next best thing in tennis. watch for him on tv in the very near future.
