I think the best period for tennis was 1988-1992. You had incredible players like Becker, Edberg, Lendl, Wilander at their finest, an exciting new generation in Agassi and Sampras and the old generation like McEnroe still able to competitively play the odd grandslam. You got to see serve volley tennis, baseline tennis, baseline vs serve volley, touch tennis, power tennis you name it. At the same time, the pace of play was not as slow as in the late 1970s nor as serve dominated as the late 1990s.

I just saw Becker Agassi Davis Cup 1989. The match was awesome. Agassi's service returns and ground-strokes were amazing and so was Becker's volleying and ground-strokes. Both players hit out of the world winners. Although Becker won the match, seeing some of the service returns Agassi hit you just knew that he was going to end up being the nightmare of serve-volleyers which he ended up being!

Nah. I'd go 81-87:88. Then you still had Borg playing McEnroe in 2 great finals, you got to see Connors come back and win 3 GS titles, you got to see McEnroe play the most perfect tennis year anyone ever has, you got to see the emergence of Wilander, Becker and Edberg, you saw the beginnings of Agassi, and you saw some great individual performances like Pat Cash winning Wimbledon, or the Super Saturday 84 at the U.S. Open, which produced the best day of tennis EVER!!! (Lendl over Cash in 5 with 2 tiebreaks, Navratilova over Evert in 3, and McEnroe over Connors in 5).

yeah its kinda tough. 1981-88 would see Borg (almost) and McEnroe peaks while 1988-92 would seek Becker/Edberg peaks with Sampras and Agassi coming on strong. The reason i prefer 1988-92 is because i think Sampras/Agassi emergence was very exciting and also the tennis was much closer to the modern game in terms of pace of serve and groundstrokes. Also the absence of a dominating player was good although you could argue that Wimbledon between 1985 to 1990 was really Becker's to lose every year.

Late 80s for the women and mid 90s for the men. Graf's peak and Sampras' peak were the best times because both had good competition.

I second the 81-87:88 period. There were some great matches and rivalries

The best in mens tennis was 81-88. The best in womens tennis was 98-2000.
