At their best, who do you think is the better indoor player?

Safin. He's just the better player of the two, on any surface, period.

Safin, at his best, is nearly unbeatable. Note his win over Fed at the austalian a couple years ago...that was Fed's PRIME year and Safin beat him.

I believe Safin also defeated Sampras when HE was in his prime, or at least playing very well. If somone knew the match I spoke of and could back me up, i'd appreciate it.

Point is, Safin's WAAAY better than Lube.

Safin played his best at the us open 2000, no man ever, would've been able to beat him and I dont think anybody playing at there best in any era would have took more than a set off him.

Agreed. Safin and Federer would be trading the No 1 ranking so much that the ATP would have to have co #1 if Safin could play consistantly and not go nuts during matches.

Yeah what's Safin's problem?

Safin would probably win 7 out of 10 matches.

Safin beat both Sampras and Federer during those players' primes...he is capable of beating anyone, on any surface, at any time. Everyone views him as a huge threat in a draw, even if his ranking doesn't show his skill.

Safin. He's just the better player of the two, on any surface, period.

X2.. emphasis on PERIOD

At his best, Safin is a monster that can take you from the baseline with powerful winners, destroy at the net, and cover court with unbelievable speed for his height.

I will agree that performance was probably the best I have seen Safin at. For those wondering what a serious Safin plays like (not one who slacks in training and is a mental case like the current one...)find and watch that match.

he didnt beat samp at his prime, he beat him near the end... cause in 01 he barley played, same in 02, but he won the USO as his final run... but i agree safin could easily be #1, but hes crazy

No he's not crazy. Maybe a basically insecure person, despite his flamboyant personality. I think we all know people like that.

This is true, Sampras was not in his prime, but still good enough to make it to the USO final. But seriously though, if you saw the way he played, you'd figure he would have beaten anyone that day.

I have the full match on my computer, pre match interviews and interviews after the match, trophy ceremony and stuff. He looks different, thinner, more concentration, calmness and flair. I wish he could still play like that.

Letīs just say Safin at his best would make the actual Federer look ordinary.
Federer would not be number 1 if Safin wasnīt a mental midget :(

Safin is overrated by alot of people, he's good but streaky, if Safin had his head on straight he would be in the top 5, he wouldn't be infront of Federer though!

Been there, done that. Always said Federer was on a different planet.

Safin is talented, but that doesn't make him the better player. I'll take Fed over him anytime

Exactly how was 2 years ago Federer's "Prime Year"?, as you've stated, when Federer now has 4 of the last 5 slams played, and has made 6 finals in a row.

yeah ok, so is this why Federer has 8 Slams and Safin has 2? Federer, ordinary, nice oxymoron.

people keep posting "when he's on, safin can beat anyone on any surface, blah, blah, blah...." that might be true but safin's problem is that he's rarely "on" for a significant amount of time, due to immaturity, laziness, whatever. that's why his career has been a shell of some of his peers (sampras, agassi, federer).

Federer is clearly the better player, in all departments, and the most talented.

Federer at his best > Safin at his best.

Federer doesn't even play his best in most matches and still could beat other pros easily. His par game is so high that it's even higher than the best game of most players. I'd say Safin's best game is better than Fed's par game, but certainly not Fed's best game !
