Of course this is my fault, but i never am able to get into a groove in doubles because groundstrokes are so few and far between. On top of that I feel constricted with one man (sometimes woman) up. And you know you arent supposed to hit at the female net player. I just cant get into a flow with doubles.

I know what it is. Because i get so few groundstrokes, whenever i get an easy return i am so tentative because i dont want to hit an unforced error. I hardly swing at the ball. This lady with the weakest serve hit a 2nd serve that was just dumping it over the net, and i hit it in the net because i was so tentative. It was so pathetic and my lowest point of the night.

Anyone else have this problem?

lol wen i was playing mix doubles with my partner for city champion... WE HAD NO TEAM WORK!!! lol.... so we have to study our playing style and tell each other wut is wrong y we didn't go? sometimes we both were ready to hit the ball but none of us would becuz we each thought some1 was goign to hit the ball...

LOL and i remember we were playing a match against western on city champs and the ball was right on the middle me and my partner didn't move!!! so then the ball was almost its second bounce we so both ran and shove and bumped each other on the ground and one of us hit the ball and we got the point!!!!! lol..... man i had a scratch on my knees and everyone there that plays tennis in baltimore city saw that!! and laughed at us AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

and i think the baseline is where the action is.... everytime i go to the net with my doubles partner i never got any action!!! i felt so sry for my partenr cuz she did all the work lol....

Agreed. It's all fair play. No disclaimer needed as soon as anyone, regardless of gender, sets foot on the court.

I hated mixed doubles with a passion. At the elite level it would be a Type A++++ personality screaming at his partner because she couldn't return a 128+ mph serve low and away from the net person. Social mixed doubles used to be especially unpleasant and playing against a husband and wife...FORGETABOUIT!! What was your question again?:p

When I'm playing regularly, I always like to mix my singles and doubles and try to play roughly an equal amount of both. I get my repetition practice in singles (just about twice as much of everything, right?) and my teamwork practice in doubles. Personally, I think playing both is complementary. The workout and the reps in singles makes you a better doubles player as far as your consistency in serves and strokes are concerned. Having to be more careful about placement in doubles can actually help your control in singles.

I don't play much mixed doubles in a relative sense, but I find that fun, too, and try to mix that in with my regular play when I can -- especially if I'm mixing in with women who are as good as or better than I am. I love to hit against women who are better players than me, but unfortunately that doesn’t happen that much. Not because I'm that great of a player, but I find that the better women players seem to want to go against men who are better than they are and don't want to mix it up with less good men players. But then again, lots of guys don't like playing against weaker women players, so I guess that's just the way it goes. :-|

My take is this, though: If you're a regular singles player and at least occasionally mix in doubles, you really shouldn't be struggling in doubles unless you're just outright going against better players that you are -- or unless you play doubles so seldom that you just can't get your timing right by virtue of never playing enough to do so. In the latter case, I probably wouldn't enjoy the doubles, either.

I'm not a fan of doubles either. Maybe it's because I'm still a developing player, but I just don't like having to decide if I should hit the ball or let my partner get it.

It can be fun sometimes if you have a partner that fits your style of play. Unfortunately, a lot of the people I play doubles with aren't comfortable volleying so they seldom try and work their way forward. This makes it even more difficult for me to decide which balls to go after as I can't see where my partner is positioned when I'm at net.

I love doubles, volleying is way more fun when you know it's most likely coming back. You get into such awkward and tight spots in doubles too, not like in singles. Reaction time is way more important and you've got angles you couldn't even imagine in singles. Doubles 4 life.

Marry her, then take her down. Then yell out something like "BOO-YAH!!!" She'll find that very endearing and love you all the more.

I'm sorry, but I cannot accept such an inappropriate suggestion.

More appropriate (after my comments) would be: Crassanova. :p

But lest I be taken too seriously, I really don't condone giving anyone a tennis ball tattoo -- especially after you've just married them. Maybe after a settling in period, though... ;)

And even if you ACCIDENTALLY tattoo them, I'd probably leave out the "BOO-YAH!!!" part, since that might cloud the sincerity of the "Whoa! Sorry! Let me find you a medic," that should immediately follow.

However, it is kind of fun suggesting those things, just because it's so much the opposite of what most people would do. (Um...most people.)

... and to add on to your hilarious post, never ever chuckle or giggle. That is an immediate banishment to the sin bin .... it will cost a new diamond ring to get out.

... never ever chuckle or giggle.

Excellent add-on! Never, under any circumstances, give give away your true feelings.

Gimme a minute while I add that one to my On Court Etiquette notes as well as my Keeping Your Marriage Intact manuscript (it's a work in progress).
