i know this has been a well discussed topic hearing how low federer strings his racquet. im wondering whats the lowest tension a pro has strung his stick... im going to move to some mid prestiges and am currently playing with a 98 sq inch bancroft ace tour+ and tried stringing it once at 46... haha boy that was fun...

Michael Russell was having his Prestige Classic frames strung at 44 pounds in hot conditions at the 2006 Australian Open! String was something like Signum Pro Poly Plasma. I also tried a low tension: Alu Power at 49 pounds in a Pro Tour..big mistake!

Yup, strung his racquet several years ago at Aptos. He was using an oversize PS 6.1 with Kirshbaum Super Smash. He says 37 and I was like 82lbs? And he said no 37lbs., I was like WOW! Especially with poly.

He's seeded #2 in singles and #1 in doubles. Unfortunately, I have to play the #2 seeded team in doubles tomorrow - I'm hoping to avoid the dreaded double bagel on the showcourt.

McEnroe seemed to always string in the mid to high 40s on his wood and midsize graphite rackets

Someone (sorry, I can't remember who) was doing theirs at 47 in Indy.

It was someone who went out, in the Doubles Quarters.

Not that much! McEnroe used to string his 200G at 40 lbs. But his actual Maxply McEnroe retro-racket is strung at 25/23 kp or 55/51 lbs (on clay).

I heard that Davide Sanguinetti strings his racquets in mid-30's. That's why his strokes look the way they do, with his ultra-low racquet head speed.

Also, John McEnroe used to string in the high-40's when he was on the ATP Tour.

Yap,
Volandri is stringing at 17 kg, Sanguinetti 16.
Funny that Albert Portas using grip size 1 !
And Oliver Patience not using any grip, just an over grip over the nude raquet.

If this trend of low tension continues, we will be stringing them by hand! I strung one at 30 pounds and when you hit the ball there was no sound! You can really generate spin!

Does anyone have a clue what a poly like Timo feels like strung at 35-40 psi?

I'm having some trouble imagining the hit.... :)

Remember Federer plays with his frame for just 1 set max I think, so the low string tension would be even lower for any of us if we tried it. Unless you will change to a fresh strung frame every set, or hitting session. Most of us dont have the cash to have that luxury, so you better string tighter then federer to allow more tension loss.

Hey I have seen this guy play a few times. He travels the country looking for local country club 10k to 20k money tournaments. In my area in the Mid Atlantic he played in one in Maryland on clay. He is like 5 ft 6 , 125 lbs. Hits will all sorts of loops and slices, drop shots, and drives other hard hitting players crazy. Kind of like Fabrice Santoro

Oren Montvassel is very hard to beat on clay.

You have to give credit to players like this that push and grind it out with low power and smarts. Very few players like this out there.

I usually string in the low 50's, but once I strung mine at 53-48lbs. with Big Banger Original, and I loved it. Since I'm not a huge hitter, it lasted me about a month before it lost too much tension and started hitting the back fence.

ok cool. yeah that guy is amazing, as Im always the first to give credit to smart players who are small with little power.

Have you seem him play?

If you watch him warm up, your like wow this guy is going to get killed as he looks like a 4.0. Then he never will miss a shot and drive the other player crazy with his spins and angles.

I love it

count polys at low tension out guys. They are so low powered anyway, now ordinary strings at low tension.. that would be interresting..

I haven't seen him play yet, but since my match today will probably not last long :( I hope to get a chance to see him today. I've heard that he's fun to watch.
