What do you think of this technology? It seems like one could stop faster with normal brakes by simply skidding on the pavement. ABS would probably be safer on snow and ice.

The coefficient of static friction is higher than the coefficient of dynamic friction. Rolling is actually static friction (think of the contact patch as static at any instant), whereas skidding is dynamic.

Plaus you skid in a straight line, if something jumps in front of you you're gonna want to brake + steer.

ABS allow the user to control the steering wheel while under heavy braking, braking distant will be longer, but you will be able to turn your car.

My anti lock brakes came into play today. I would've skidded into the middle of an intersection, rather than braking and making a right turn on red :)
