not bad... keep layers to a minimal. be careful

I think some guy did this to a prostaff a while back, except the inner color was light blue. He did a nice job too...

why less layers?

i think for cars = more layers = more better
or is it concerning weight issues?

Why not? Seems like Zhan spends more time taking pictures of his racquet than playing with it anyway.

It may as well look pretty for the pictures.

A racquet is not a car, and yeah I think he's talking about weight issues. The other guy who painted his racquet said it felt completely different from painting it.

as of sanding + priming
the racquet feels LIGHTER
the stock paint job is pretty hefty

Ah I see what you're trying to do, though there might be a point in where you will add too much paint because there's really no way to tell unless you got the weight..thing and know the original weight of your racquet.

Well, in a sense more layers can be a weight issue but not by much. What I mean is put as many layers as you want, but make sure each layer is a really thin coat. when a thicker layer is applied, you cannot tell what spots of the racquet have more paint coverage, which can lead to more paint on one side of the racquet thus, a slight imbalance. You may think this isnt significant, but when sanded, multiple coats of primer are on, then multiple coats of top color is on, and the optional gloss coat, it can be a factor. but generally you are safe.

well u r right
i got about 5 coats of red in the inner ring and it already feels like a damn hyperhammer instead of the 9 point headlight feeling i had when it WAS a prostaff n6.1 lol

so... i guess more customization with leadtape to in the handle to counter-weight it

lol... i painted one racquet before... I sanded all the original logos and paint off, i put 2 coats of primer, 2 top coats, and 2 gloss coats. never felt the same way either. lol but lead helps to get it back.. haha

let me ask you something:

1. Did you strip it of the old paint? Got a picture?
2. Did you prime it? What did you use?
3. Did you sand it? What grade?
4 What paint did you use? How did you apply it (must be very thin layers)

actually, it's very possible to do it properly using car primer and paint but you have to be careful applying the paint as it's not a car but a very small and delicate instrument. Good luck. I may do the same with my older frames.

BTW, Any graphic artists on the board?

I dont think I'll actually do it but I'm not a fan of the Prince NXG's paint job even though I like the racquet, amd was thinking about painting it once I buy it. I'll keep an eye out on this thread for any tips thrown out there :)

i stripped old paint ... no pix cuz i thought it wouldnt matter so i didnt take any

i primed it with "dunplipaint" sandable primer from pepboys (ugh its left over from a car project)

sanded racquet with 120 grit dry sand and 400 semi-wet...
but there r still scratches
but its less...

ugh
quite heavy layers in the beginning cuz i was being a noob but then i sanded it down lol...
but totalling 5 layers of red right now
black i just got some this afternoon...
so im gonna do black outter shell tomorrow with the redarea taped

That's what I would do (based on my experience):

1 The auto paint should be acrylic-based. So the primer should be also acrylic-based (read the labels). That will make ensure that the paint sticks properly

2 Apply a thin coating of the primer and sand it with the finest sandpaper very lightly so it's smooth

3 Sparay it lightly (keep the can about a foot away) with a mist so there are no bubble anywhere on the surface. Let it dry well and reapply. Use masking tape for different colors and should be fine

4. Let it dry for at least 24 hour before stringing ...

Haha saaaame thought here. I demo'd one a week ago and really liked it, bought mine yesterday. Plays great but has a pretty week PJ.

Zhan, you maybe want to sum up the process here incase others want to follow it? I think its great you went from start to finish here, so I'd be interested in trying it myself using your process. Let us know how it holds up in the future too, and if it plays any different.

I would've used a more neutral color primer so you cant see the black through the red. It also seems like you rushed this, you might think the paint is dry, but it might not be, I'd wait 2 days in between each step (so priming alone would take about a week). Another thing, you have a major case of orange peel going on, bust out that sandpaper.

You know how the surface of an orange is? How it has little pimples. I think that's what he's talking about. The texture of the rind.

lead tape for the win!

Zhan,
I stripped and painted my 6.1 a couple months ago. It took a little tweaking but it plays great, better than stock. It now swings like I want - still very headlight but more polarized, all without any increase in the static weight. I've got a brand new 6.1 as a backup; it feels clunky to me now, and I use it only when I have to.

Your racquet will reek of paint for some time. I used regular spray cans, and it took about a month before the stench cleared.

Good luck.

Noveson
10-01-2006, 04:21 PM
You should put some white stripes along 3 and 9. That would look sweet. If you leave it like it is right now everybody will think you have an experimental racquet like Blake:)
