I hit what many would call a "modern" forehand. Open stance, Extreme SW grip, tons of arm rotation, etc.... My forehand looks a bit like Davydenko's actually (I've been meaning to get some videos up here!). Anyway, do you follow a set guideline for finishing? Over the shoulder? Across the body? Either, depending on the shot? Should I not think about the follow-through at all and just let what happens happen? I want to improve consistency. Thanks.
i think the follow through deals a lot with the spin imparted, like over the shoulder adds more topspin... around side is more flat i would say
but you should keep your finish undercontrol

There are four finishes that can be identified by top players: the 'reverse' or verticle finish (up over the same side of your head as your hitting arm); Over the shoulder, across the shoulder, and down over the hip. You can often see a player hit with a ton of topspin finish very low. It actually makes sense: If you get low below the ball for topspin and finish very high, if you are going to elongate your finish (which at very high speeds is desirable), you are going to need more space. The finish over the shoulder is shorter because of the shoulder. But if you finish high and decelerate all the way back down to your left hip (if you're right handed), you will have several more feet for your racquet to carry before stopping at the hip.
You can hit flat or with a lot of topspin with each...it all depends on how low you get the racquet prior to contact.
