Seems that every time i watch a video or look at pictures on these boards, the person/persons are of asian background? Is this a trend in American tennis? Just curious.

Yes, statistics show that 95 percent North American tennis enthusiasts are Asians. The rest are Canadians (despite the fact that Canadians are not an ethnic group). :p

No, I think it's because the Far East leads the world in consumer technology and young Asian guys tend to be very fond of and very good with such technology, so it's easy and fun for them to film, edit, upload videos.

Based on observation in my area, there are a disproportionate number of Asians (Indian, East Asian, Southeast Asian) playing tennis in the USA as compared to the percentage of Asians in the general population. As a non-Asian I find that most of my playing partners are Asian.

The one thing that I find unique about Asian, especially east Asian, tennis players is that many seem to play for social interaction within their Aisan community. There are many very good players that are Asian, some of the best in my area, but many Asians seem to go to the courts just to fool around and hang out. You often see lots of males and females playing together and they often come in large groups. It seems like it's their "thing" to do.

There are many positives to this phenomenon. Because so many Asians play tennis and many are very good, that means there are more good players to hit with. Also, Even when young kids come in large groups, they are usually civilzed and friendly. However, the big negative is that the courts are often crowded with a bunch of kids fooling around.

This is a great place to learn/share ideas/discuss tennis. I could careless if this whole board is consist of aliens or penguins. As long as they love and want to play tennis THE PROPER WAY, I'm happy with it. Just my .02 cents

I believe that tennis is a good sport for asians. Isn't the average height/size of asians smaller than the average for other american races. At a certain age it is almost impossible for the average american born asiatic to play high school or even jr high school football or basketball. Not to mention, soccer sucks.

Asians gravitate toward sports like tennis and golf. Asian parents encourage participation in these sports. Probably something to do with upward mobility and these sports are considered middle/upper class sports. In my area there are far more asians in the tournaments/leagues than their percentage in the population would suggest.

To the contrary, those kids had so many, but probably excelled at none. Their parents simply push everything possible to the kids, without knowing whether the kids like them or not. When they grow up, they know a lot and become jack of all trades, but profess at none. The reason is simply that they are not interested in those things, or even if the kids had the interests, their interests probably would have been ruined by the excessive pressure from the parents.

so the time they grow up, they can play tennis, play piano, play ping-pong and play badminton, and at not bad a level, but that's it, the kids won't improve on it, as they naturally have no interest.

Federer actually started at a later age than most of the ATP players, but his natural interest in the sport already carried him to 9 Slams.

Where is Michelle Wie? She wants to go to college, but her parents want her to play golf. She was trained a lot tennis by her father, but he decided that tennis is not for her because she does not like to run. Regardless of all the marketing hype about her, she hasn't really shined much on the green.

That must explain the tremendous success of Asians in pro tennis...;) .

Last I heard, there were some Japanese who were purty darn good with a baseball bat (winners of the WBC, several pros now playing in the Major Leagues)...

Asians are better at games that require better response and reflexes than those that require more physical strength. So for singles tennis, it is very hard to go to the top or win a major championship, but for doubles, it is easier.

so for games like table tennis, badminton(though not a ball), Asians dominate. but for games like football, basketball, rugby, track and field, the white or black who tend to have bigger muscle build dominate.

nopiforyou
10-04-2006, 07:13 PM
Do you see Asian basketball players? I've only seen two Asian basketball players: Ha Seung Jin and Yao Ming. Baseball has been very successful with Japan, but not too much in other countries. Soccer isn't that great in Asia too. Although the Asians may argue, let's face it. WE SUCK AT SOCCER!! This has led us Asians to find shelter in the civilized and wimp sport of tennis. Although some take to swimming. Non contact sports usually (tennis ball doesn't count). Look at golf! tennis! ping pong, etc.

It's a shame that I suck with computers in everything and I'm Korean. Oh well, maybe someday I'll actually care about my IP address and the amount of memory that my RAM contains.

Oh oh oh.... there is a pack following you? If you keep posting your "wisdoms" every ten minutes in every freaking thread of this forum, I can see how you might get that feeling, but it's all deceptive, I assure you. Just think of it as friends saying "hello" when they see you.

Why don't you just stick to your area of expertise and post in the health & fitness section about the weightloss programs you tried and why they failed. If you follow that route and still feel like someone is following you, I suggest that you look up a mental asylum in your area, go downthere and check yourself in.

Crap...shoulda lied...this is not good. I thought I was safe because I've kissed a girl and didn't build my own computer. I got tripped up by the periodic table and the pics of Maxwell and Newton, Oh ya, I'm asian too.

Well, Asians have much weaker builds compared to most other ethnic groups... we obviously have a better shot with racquets/paddles than we do with baseball bats or footballs. I think it makes sense.
Speak for yourself, bro. There are more asians in the NFL or MLB or or NBA or NHL than the tennis top ten. Sumo wrestling isn't for the skinny. Olympic gold medalist in the hammer throw is guess what...

Oh, oh! I think the questions are disproportionately weighted, and some just push you too much toward nerdiness. I built a computer, use linux and firefox, and knew the pictures and the elements and all but, I didn't expect the result to be that skewed. ;)

1% scored higher (more nerdy),
0% scored the same, and
99% scored lower (less nerdy).

I'm azn too. On my tennis team, there are a total of 3 azns. In the entire school of 1200, there are like 15.

Asian people like to be on the Internet.. generally they are nerds.. And they go to message boards.

Other races usually play more and post less.

If I hadn't quit my CS program when I was in college I might have been nerdier. ;)

Yeah, and the build your computer question thing was kinda so so. They should've asked who overclocked his/her 80286 to 27 Mhz ... hehe. Man, that was VERY FAST back then.

I took the quiz. I am 'Not nerdy, but then again maybe not all that cool either.'I'll accept that. The reason I clicked on this thread:It's about the largest continent, and the OP is an Aussie, and it started out not really about nerdiness, but the Asian's interest in tennis and frequency of posting photos and videos. SO I kept reading.I sorta get the tech/nerd/photo connection. Tennis is loved, pretty much universally, so I get why the people from the largest continent would play it in great numbers. But when people refer to Asians (man, that is a lot of countries), are they talking about everyone from Israel to the Phillippines? The Ural mountains to Sri Lanka? Oceania to the Bering Strait? Is Asian a race or a continent designation? If you were from Israel or Palestine, would you consider yourself Asian or Middle Eastern? I know an Iranian who thinks of himself more as European than Asian.Someone from one of the 'Stans -- Asian? Or are 'Asians' just from southeast Asia?Ooooopps, I think my nerd meter just went up a few notches.;-) NERD alert...fascination with Geography.
