View Full Version : Best way to drive the ball back when receiving a topspin?

So right now, I've been having trouble driving the ball back with topspin. Usually, it either goes straight into the tape, or it flies out. But sometimes I'm successful in returning a topspin shot from my opponent, but its not really a drive since I had to use excessive spin to keep it in... Usually the balls are at waist height...

I'm used to the ball machine really....

So are there any tips on how I can improve on driving the ball back (smash, winner, etc.) against a top spin?

I had a similar problem. Maybe you're rolling over your wrist too much and semi-pushing.

Keep your weight forward and try to take the ball early, with good trunk rotation

Obviously, when a ball has lots of spin- spin of any kind- topspin, extreme slice, a dropshot with side/backspin. It adds an extra element to the return.

You have to take control of the ball or the spin will dictate how the ball rebounds.

Naturalgut is correct, your mechanics must be correct, be in position, body weight moving through the ball, racket stroking smoothly and firmly. It helps to have some spin of your own to add control. In this case, replying to heavy topspin, I would respond with a bit of topspin, as well (it does not have to be exagerated).

Good luck,

i find its much easier on the backhand because i slam really flat, almost a downward trajectory.

Is it better to be in an open or closed stance in this scenario? Or does it not really make a difference?

make sure you hit with an open faced racket, perpendicular to the ground, otherwise you'll end up framing it a lot. Make sure you push through the ball too, and direct the shot back.

So since i have a semiwestern forehand, I should change grips?
