A short loopy ball? I think you got your terminology mixed up..

but if you can't put it away, you can place it deep with topspin, hit a slice, or hit a dropshot.. Get to net afterwards since you're already there.

with short loopy ball ...a mishit which is short and high..or weak return of serve...or a weak retrieval...

Is it a high ball or low ball??

High ball you can hit down, no problem.
Low ball you have to hit deep and to the corner.

good amount of height with a very sharp trajectory as vertical velocity is less..

Yeah, I agree. Play the ball deep in whatever way you feel comfortable and then follow it in to net. I suggest that you work on being able to put these shots away though. It's an easy thing to practice because all you have to do to similuate it for the most part is to bounce the ball and then hit it.

if it's low, I often hit sidespin slice deep down the line - well executed, it's essentially a put away, because the guy is not there;
if I have time I still drive it...any direction really.

if it's high and short - it's a standard recipe for put away - you just need to learn to do it with your backhand shot, like you do it with forehand.
Short balls have to be punished - there is no compromise, no mercy.

I tend to slice it back with really a lot of backspin and side spin, not deep but angle. sometimes the sidespin is so much that it changes its horizontal direction when the ball is floating. you are close to the net, you can do this and the ball still crosses the net. but when it bounce, it bounces out of the court to your right, or to your opponents court's left. (if you are a right-handed.)

One of my favourite, make sure you hit in front of you and meet the ball high up and wiper motion, bam!!

When I get a short backhand, I like to hit a dropshot.
