Not to mention that a large majority of racquets have 16 mains, so it's more likely that these "Champions" would use one anyway.

All the ones you mentioned are has been’s! The new breed use 16 main rackets, just look at the top 10. Head sales are off 25% this year, they are doing poorly (guess the flexpoint gimmick hole in the middle is a joke).

It just depends on whether you're a flat hitter or a heavy top spinner.
Where did you get the 25% sales loss figure? According to Head's Annual Report racquet sales increased 1.8% since the introduction of Flexpoint which is slightly ahead of the industry averages for 2006.
Where'd you pull that number out of? Yes flexpoint is a gimmick, but almost everyone I know that uses a radical got the fxp, and their sales increased (even by a little margin).
Plus its not the equipment, its the talent of the players. Some prefer the 18 mains (agassi, safin etc..) and some prefer 16 (sampras, fed etc...). Pointless argument to say the least.
