Is indoor tennis for sissies?

Walter Clopton Wingfield and God intended tennis to be played outdoors. To be played under cloudy skies, sunny skies. calm weather, cold weather, through heat or cold. With no limit to how high the lobs can go.

The wholesomeness of fresh air and sunshine has a therapeutic effect on its users. Naturally ALL of the major championships are played outdoors.

Hide your tennis behind closed doors if you must, but as for me, I play out in the open FOR ALL THE WORLD TO SEE!

This court is definitely not for sissies.

Tennis should be played outdoors - these are the only conditions that a hardened TT member would consider as a justifiable reason for heading indoors:

- Apocalyptic Earthquake, although better make sure that the indoor facility has strong foundations...

- Multiple Twister threat, could play havoc with your ball toss.

- Tsunami, when the balls get wet its game over.

- Avalanche, at least the TT player will be equipped with a minimum of 8 rackets in their bag to use as snow shoes.

- Volcano erupting, even sun block wont help and a heat shield will be required on the indoor.

- Alien Invasion, although you could challenge them to a best of three for the rights to the planet or at the very least, the court.

Move to a place with a proper winter and we’ll see what your opinion of indoor tennis is.

As a Canadian, I ended up playing most of my tennis indoors.

I love it.

Love the pace.

So fast, so exhilarating.

But, of course, playing outdoors on a beautiful, sunny day has its own charm

tbh, I think the fact that we, Canadians, play a lot of our tennis indoors influences the players we develop.

Raonic and Shapovalov have games perfectly suited for indoors, for example

I'm Canadian from Toronto. I play outdoors from late April 'til early October.

I just came back from a 10-day trip out west, from Edmonton to Canmore, Banff and Radium Hot Springs. It was consistently 10 degrees every day. I can see why indoor tennis is more prevalent there than in Toronto but let's not speak for our very large country.

ok, but just pointing out -- that even in your timeframe, half the year is spent indoors, which is quite a lot compared to other countries

hope you enjoyed your trip out west!

I play the winter league here in London and its pretty brutal in January. The rules do not allow indoor play and you just get used to it. It's an extension of playing the conditions, cold is just a different problem to solve from say wind or sun.

I don't understand how anyone lives in places where it's cold. I walked off the court yesterday because the temperature got down below 15 Celcius. It was terrible.

What's a proper winter? I used to live in Minnesota and had to play indoor tennis about 7 months of the year. Now I live in Arizona and can play outdoor tennis 12 months a year, (as long as you don't mind 110 degree days!). But the winters here are mild. That's what I call a proper winter.

I looked it up. 15 Celcius is 59.1 Fahrenheit, for us Americans. Brutal!!

Why were you such a sissy when you lived in MN? Why didn’t you play outside in the winter?

Lol - one of the local league matches I did last winter (in January), we had it in one of the local London tennis clubs, it was very cold the day before and on that Saturday morning, the court had a thin layer of snow/icy.... lol
By the time we finished our match, the court was about 3/4 cleared of snow.
Some leagues based at an indoor facility let you book indoor courts for the league matches... I have seen a few matches played in the indoor setting a few times too, not mine.

Tried it once. The cold weather makes the balls too dead

this entire thread topic seems the product of dead balls, juvenile silliness from someone who wants the world to know he moved and no longer needs to play indoors. Age-appropriate behavior for a twelve year old.

Sounds like a familiar story! Unfortunately our leagues organiser is captain clipboard - stickler for the rules we have 4 indoor at my club and never allowed to be used. Are you around for a hit soon?

Visit Winnipeg/Manitoba in winter and you will understand why Indoor Tennis is not for sissies. The drive to the venue alone is risking your life with the slippery roads, snowplows and low visibility not to mention braving -40c just to be able to play tennis.

Cross-country ski and play platform tennis.

That's why they call it Winterpeg, and even the Canadians fear going there in the winter. Anti-freeze isn't even guaranteed to -40c! How does life go on when it gets that cold?

Well they just endure, have a positive outlook, take care of each other and look forward to summer

Isn't the whole thread a sardonic retort to outdoor tennis is for peasants? It's pretty tongue in cheek.

Sorry if I gave that impression. Sometimes you have to settle for indoor tennis. But it certainly wouldn't be my first choice.
You didn’t just give that impression; you stated it clearly.

Clearly, where you live indoor courts aren’t really necessary. But is it necessary to troll everyone who doesn’t live in such a place?

Two trolls don’t make a right.
Have you read the Outdoor Tennis is for Peasants thread? Just have a read and you'll see this whole thread is a comeback on that as a bit of fun. No intention to troll you or anyone else. I do like your use of the 'two wrongs don't make a right' phrase though - creative.

I haven’t read through that thread, because I can get a good idea of what’s in it just from the title. But, that thread was started quite a long time ago, and the most recent post was back on Wednesday, so it looks like it’s dying out. The time to start joke threads in response has well and truly passed.

It’s like hitting someone with a comeback a couple of days after they insulted you. It’s too late. You missed your chance.
