Nadal defends Federer's place in history....

I find it rather amusing that a great player like Nadal feels that Federer has nothing to prove anymore, that he has achieved more than most players in tennis history. Yet people like us still "demand" that he wins the French Open to "prove" that he is GOAT ??

This is what Nadal has to say at his interview:

Q. Federer is probably the best player in the world and he's won all three Grand Slam tournaments last year, except that of Roland Garros. Do you think this is something that he can achieve one day?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, what Federer has done is something that almost nobody has done in history, so what are you going to ask of Federer? What he does is exceptional already. He's played 18, 19 tournaments last year, and he came in final in all of them except one, the one when he lost against Murray. So I know how difficult it is to be playing Toronto, and Cincinnati with the heat and all this. It is the fourth year when he'll try and be No. 1. He's been No. 1 for three years. And last day I was watching the number of points that Sampras had when he was No. 1, I think he had 5500 -- I think it was 4800 points, and Federer has scored 8,000 points. So, I think I don't need to say -- there is no need to say more.

Nadal, like Federer, is a class act

Being a Federer fan, I have to tip my hat to Nadal. He has shown nothing but respect for Fed throughout their history. And he is absolutely spot-on in his observations. They, meaning Media, keep raising the bar on the GOAT every time he breaks a new record, which is basically every time he plays a slam...

People like MAc were saying he's the GOAT in 2005 BEFORE he'd accumulated all of these records, but it;s not good enough, it would seem.

Good of Nadal to straighten everyone out.;)

Rafa's English has improved a lot over the years. I remember ESPN used to send Mary Jo Fernandez to interview him.
Rafa's rituals on court can be annoying but I really think he is a good kid, very grounded. I like that he is very close to his family. I remember him saying that his Uncle Tony told him to "stay hungry but stay humble".

Well Nadal, or anyone currently on the tour, hasn't accomplished half of what Federer has, so for him to see him as anything but exceptional would be truly exceptional ! That doesn't mean he thinks he can't beat him at the USO for instance.

Nadal tried to explain that in his own mind, no one has ever dominated tennis like Federer is right now, hence the points comparison.

For "fans" to constantly question Federer as being the GOAT is legitimate, as this is an endless debate to which there are no true answers.

How about Tiger Woods ? Same difference.

my great respect for nadal just increased ten fold....i just wish that the fans had the same respect as federer and nadal have for one another...

That's the translation of his Spanish part of the press conference. If you don't see a lot of "..., no?", he's not talking in English :D Does't bother me, tennis is one of the few sports that're truly global so I really like the fact that not everyone speaks perfect English.
