I had always thought he did it in a much "meaner" manner than he did. It looked like it was all in good fun. If they were really going to get upset about it I would have just conceded the point and gone on with the match. But oh well.

Connors could be a mean SOB and his tantrums were ugly.

Unlike McEnroe, at least they seemed genuine enough.

For some reason, I can accept McEnroe and his antics better than I can Connors. I agree that Jimmy was just more mean spirited.

I have never understood why people who love Chris Evert so much love Jimmy, because while they had similar people in their lives, and a similar game, and a relationship, it's so contradictory. Right down to trying to embarass John Lloyd. Jimmy was a selfish, money grubbing louse with a $3 haircut.

Agreed. But I'd say you were overly generous there at the end, Suwanee.

Plus, I think that may have insulted our buddy Monsieur Deuce.

well said, well said....Roddick should get a real coach and role-model....

aHHHHhahahaha, yeah, I'm just waiting for someone to post a youtube link to the clip of him with his racquet between his legs.

That was one vulgar bastidge on the court. On a bad day, worse than Mac and Nasty combined.

Everyone thought it was so funny and it was but how friggin' angry would you be as the other guy when he did that?

I remember that one. Also some WTA player done the same thing a few years back, can't recall her name.

really? a wta player simulated masturbation with her racquet like jimmy did?

Double standards, when Hingis went over to Graf's side, she was penalized

The rules were different back then, I've seen other matches from the 70s/80s where a player crosses the net to argue where a ball landed. The quality of officiating was not high back then, lots of strange rulings, incompetent umpires(getting the wrong score was not uncommon) etc.
Not excusing Mac & Connors, but I can see why they were frustrated, it seemed like so many of the officials weren't well versed in the rules, like they are today.

Those two could learn a thing or two from today's great: Roger and Rafael. Two very flashy tennisplayers, but also well mannered.

I think it's the reverse: Fed and Nadal could learn from them. If they acted like Connors and Mac, tennis would be much more entertaining (and probably more popular too.)

You can't act like Connors or Mcenroe because of the rules. They would be defaulted. The rules are too strict and it is not good for entertainment.

If my son would behave like that, or my dad, I would be disgusted. Being an ******* has nothing to do with being entertaining. Just watched Federer demolish Safin with super tennis, a lot better than those spastic Connors' groundstokes.

Shouldn't you be watching WWE right about now?

I may have no choice but to watch WWE if tennis continues to produce boring nice guy personalities who can't pull in high enough TV ratings to justify airing matches.

That's silly. Sampras beefed up US ratings with his exciting (that is uh not exciting) personality.

How did the Sampras US ratings compare to Connors and McEnroe US ratings?

To be completely honest with you - I don't know. From what I have heard the Mac era was the peak - certainly his volatile personality helped. But the driving factor was that he was American - that was the key.

If you think that Nadal can sell tennis in the United States better than Roger you are very, very wrong. I also don't think that he can do better than Roger in selling tennis internationally. As spicy a player as he is on the court, Rafa, in fact, isn't much of a character - being a very low-key guy and hardly ever opinionated on any topic. His broken English doesn't really help.

Now, I like Rafa specifically because he is low key, but I think I'm in the minority.

Where are you getting the idea from my brief post above, or any other posts, that I think Nadal would sell tennis better than Fed? I never even mentioned his name. As far as I'm concerned, Nadal is a nice guy pansy too. Too bad Soderling didn't beat his candy ass.

And while I'm at it, I was disgusted to see Djokerdude give a racket clap to Nadal during their match. Huh? You're trying to BEAT that guy, not join his fan club!! You know a guy has thrown in the towel when you see that, and lo and behold, Joker quit officially soon afterwards...

Oh, my bad. My reading comprehension is pretty low lately.

I think tennis could really use a bad boy. Djokovic isn't nearly as bad as he was cracked up to be a year ago. It's too bad Soderling can't volley - would have been a nice villain.

Even Roscoe Tanner back in the day was a real character. Now a felon, not so surprisingly.

The title of this thread made me think of something completely different then what I've found in here. Oh well, I'm going to go "rub one out" before I go to bed.

Yeah, Soderling is cool. We need more guys like him, and maybe some felons too.

Sampras helped kill interest in tennis in the US. GS finals with Becker in the 80s got higher ratings than any slam final with Sampras(except the ones vs Agassi)
Despite being an American, Sampras' dominance did nothing for the popularity of tennis in the US

when Connors/Mac retired in '92, tennis' popularity in the US started declining greatly, until it reached the level it has been at for about the last 10 years, a fringe sport that receives very little mainstream coverage in the US. Nothing will change this, the sport is too far gone to ever return to the 80s levels.

its watching that now but i hated conners back in the day, big time. i always thought mcenroe was funny, still do since he still goes off playing on the senior tour. jimmy was/is just an a-hole plain and simple.

The people that are trashing Jimmy are really making a pretty good case to slam him. I can't really recall ever thinking him an a**hole. I did remember thinking Mac to be an ahole for his abusive antics, but, I haven't ever felt like taking a swing at McEnroe. If Jimmy ever did what he did to me...I'd take a swing at him. He had no business showing up the ref on my side of the court and, inadvertently, making a fool out of me.

I think the only thing that will save tennis is for the existence/reemergence of pure rivalries. One great men's rivalry will not save the entire sport of tennis. We need many, many, many rivalries in all the draws--womens, doubles, mixed. You can't just hope that rivals will meet in the finals, with the title on the line. There has to be interest placed in someone knocking someone out in the Semis.

With all the money and sponsorship consideration around the game..it's unlikely that rivalries will ever exist. Players don't want to risk offending a politically-correct sponsor. Look at all the time Nadal and Federer meet outside of tennis. They're too friendly with each other.
