Frank Dancevic & his partner Fred Neimeyer won a round of doubles at the Canadian Open by defeating Julien Benneteau & Michael Llodra (7.5,6.3). The draw list states very clearly than advancing to the second round in doubles for the Rogers Cup secures you 75 points, yet the ATP deducted Frank's points of 46 to 41. What happened to the 75 points he & Fred earned? I double-checked and all the other players who lost in the second round in doubles (including Roger Federer) got 75 points but these two.

Just curious...
Maybe they were penalized because they quit (withdrew) from the doubles.
That would make sense to me, as players should be penalized for withdrawing - unless it is due to an obvious and serious injury which occurred during the tournament.

mcenroe vs. courier was sickening. sure courier could have fed mac some bagels if he went all out on that serve/forehand (wow). the mixed dubs match was a very bad joke, carling would have struggled at my club's intercity ladies night.

and those guys asking anna to marry her were asking a lot.. since when is polygamy legal? lol

well worth the price of admission even though i lost $60 at jane/finch... oh well at least i got away with my life.

I know you like to joke a lot, so I'm assuming you're kidding about the $60? :p

i would have said more if i was joking. it was more being a sissy at a bank machine.. i didn't have enough money for parking at the rexall centre so i had to use a bank machine at the jane/finch mall. after pressing "withdraw 60" i was so concerned about getting my card back after the transaction that I forgot to grab my money. i've left my card behind previously at bank machines so i was extra concerned on not doing it at jane/finch. i'm sure the money went to somebody less fortunate though, so it's ok i guess, but more than likely it went to some already rich jane/finch drug dealer.

so my ticket was actually worth $ 85, but still well worth it, we yelled some pretty juicy stuff at johnny mac, got on the jumbo tv screen and we proposed to anna, so it's all good ^_^

did you go on any days???

That's unfortunate, rafter. I was joking with my friends that we should have gone to Jane-Finch mall to eat, but I don't think I'd ever want to get out of my car in that area.

I went on Tuesday for most of the day, around 11-5:30. Even though I had attended the womens event several times before, I was really impressed this time by their hitting. I caught half a set of the Bondarenko-Camerin (I think it was Camerin) match and they hit with tremendous consistency and pace. The match was on the side court beside the Grandstand and I watched from a few feet away.

Ivanovic was on another side court in the morning for over an hour with a few film cameras, so I'm assuming she was filming a commercial, probably for the US Open? My friend took a few pictures as she had to stare at one of the cameras.

One more match I saw was the first set of Dubois-Sugiyama but I had to leave the stadium, it gets too hot out there during the day, especially when you're trying to avoid buying any grossly overpriced drinks inside the grounds!

dancevic drew safin first round. i think he can beat safin, especially if the weather is humid and the match drags on - which greatly increases the chances of numerous safin meltdowns.

Dancevic played well in the Qs, but not too dominant (was broken several times, which is surprising), that was heavy fighting. We'll see.

Anyway, I am sure he will be pumped up. Go, Frank!

i've noticed that he tends to play up or down to his opponents level. you rarely see him win 6-0 or 6-1. he can beat safin and then lose to someone ranked in the 200's the next day

Canada's Vasek Pospisil is in the Junior Boys' doubles final with partner
Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) after their opponents Stephen Donald (AUS) and
Greg Jones (AUS) retired. Pospisil and Dimitrov were up 4-0 when Donald and Jones retired.

The pair will be playing Jonathan Eysseric and Jerome Inzerillo, both of France, in the finals.

Dancevic beats Del Potro and meets Verdasco

In Bangkok, Frank D. won against his (occasional?) doubles partner, Del Potro, in a 3-set TB. Very good result.

Now Verdasco, whom he beat in Montreal.

Not an easy draw, but ... hey, they aren't playing for free:)

an update on Vasek (he lives in the same city as me), he is now ranked 31 in itf juniors, and he made it to the doubles final at the Australian Open juniors.

He also got to practice with none other than ROGER FEDERER before his semifinal vs. Djokovic. He has been recently assigned to the Canadian Davis cup squad.

Futures Tournament in Montreal

OK, it's that time of the year when a Futures still comes to Montreal (at Jarry Park):)

Main Draw:
http://www.itftennis.com/mens/tourn...nd.asp?tournament=1100017281&event=1100098695

Talked to Mr. William Coffey, the ITF supervisor, who confirmed the main draw matches start today Tuesday at 10AM.

Be there:)

In the 1st round, in one of the attractive matchups, Florin Mergea of Romania, the former Wimbledon junior champion, plays Vincent Millot (2) of France, the runner up last year against Frederic Niemeyer, who's not playing here this year.

Let's hope Eric Chvojka and Philip Bester, as all the Canadians, will do well!

Erik Chvojka wins the first Canadian Futures tourney of the year

Erik Chvojka of Montreal won the first Canadian Futures tourney of the year, played in Gatineau last week:

http://www.itftennis.com/mens/tourn...ournament=1100017280&event=1100098693&round=5

Erik is 21, a very versatile and at times (esp when coming to the net) spectacular all-court player, a lefty, and I'm glad to salute this accomplishment. I think he'll get in the 500s now.

Let's hope that Tennis Canada will put some funds into his development in order to help with his coaching and getting to tournaments.

Milos Raonic (a tall, big, 17 years old) also did quite well. A wildcard, he got into the QFs, where he lost a tight 3 setter to the eventual runner-up.

Martin Verkerk and Florin Mergea in the Montreal Futures SFs

Come in great numbers at Jarry Park:

Saturday 11AM, singles SFs
Sunday Noon, singles F

Martin Verkerk, the former #14 in the ATP rankings and finalist of the Roland Garros, now 30, is playing quite well and qualified for the SFs, where he will meet Rafael Arevalo of El Salvador, 21 years old, the owner of a great forehand and a great mover, a quite explosive player.

Verkerk beat Vasek Pospisil, a versatile Canadian, who in my opinion is better at the net than from the baseline.

The sight of Martin's service bombs is still something to behold. He's playing a quite controlled but dominant game from the baseline too.

http://www.itftennis.com/mens/tourn...ournament=1100017281&event=1100098695&round=2

Another good showing was that of Florin Mergea, of Romania, the winner of the Wimbledon in Juniors, several years ago, who also qualified for the SFs.

Like Verkerk, he's now over #500, but has a great technique which was put today to great use in beating Travis Rettenmeyer of the US, one of the few S-Volleyers left in the Futures circuit. Great movement of the ball and passing shots from Mergea, and lots of touch.

I expect we'll have Milan Pokrajac of Canada (who had the best tourney amongs the Canadians) trying to hold his own against Mergea.

looks like pokrajac lost. too bad, he's a good player. remember when he used to play intercounty matches with his brother. needless to say my partner and i used to lose pretty quickly.

funny thing was at the time (a few years ago) all he wanted out of tennis was a scholarship. glad to see he's giving the tour a shot

I've seen Chvojka play live once; I thought he had lots of fire-power from the baseline, but was lacking consistency. Good win for him!

Martin Verkerk?

Is his time off the tour related to injuries, or is it just quitting... and now trying to come back?

Verkerk beats Mergea in the Montreal Futures F

OK, the people who came today to the final of the Futures in Montreal were able to see a great match, one in which Martin Verkerk (of Holland) was able to beat Florian Mergea (of Romania) by

6-7[8] 7-6(9) 6-4

Great display of serving by Verkerk and of passing shots (from both sides, great 1HBH) by Mergea. The match was finally tipped in Verkerk's favor when Mergea went long on two of his FH drives from dominant positions, at 4-4.

BTW, it seems that Verkerk had shoulder problems for quite some time, this being the reason for him having to play at this level now. Anyway, we were glad of having him and Mergea here:)

The next Futures in this series is this week in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Wow, lots of Slavic/Eastern European names in CDN!
Same here, btw, in soccer as well as tennis. Very athletic and successful ... and some really cool-sounding names. Although Philip Bester is kind of a cool name, too.[/QUO

How about Daniel Nestor? He's a Serbian immigrant.

Canada's always been a nation of Eastern European immigrants who are successful in all walks of life.

Similar deal down here. We're all immigrants. I think it's only the Mayflower WASP crowd who thinks of themselves otherwise.

Good call on Daniel Nestor. He was actually born in 'Yugoslavia', iirc.
Same here but less of a career thus far: we've got Amer Delic. Bosnian kid from FL who played for Illinois.

A few years ago, I was hitting with a really good young Kosovar/Bosnian kid who hiked 80 km with half his family to climb a fence and live as a refugee in some camp/village in Italy. Then found his way over to the US. Nice kid, very talented mover. Played at a small college but couldn't afford anything. I gave him three old sticks and he beat me with them. Ended up quitting tennis and got two jobs. Now he's in real estate and also hopes to open a restaurant.

I hope my kids end up with half the toughness of this kid.

Well , they will if be you are as stong as this Bosnian/Kosovar is and set a good example. Make sure they're happy , have a lot of your time, develop a good work ethic, and are responsible. Raising kids is a 24/7 job for many years.

Wozniak and Dubois fight it out in Challenger SF

Great result for both of them to get to the SF of this Challenger and good use of this week after Indian Wells ... They hadn't played each other in quite a while. Too bad they had to play each other ...

Milos Raonic (17 years old), the new Canadian hope

Milos Raonic, only 17, has done very well in the series of 3 Canadian Futures, scoring 1QF, 1 2nd round (losing to Verkerk, the winner of that one, in a tight match) and now a final!

In all of them, he was a (now we see that) well-deserved WC.

He's playing today the final of the Futures in Sherbrooke

(French commentary)

He's beaten Eric Chvojka, who won the Gatineau Futures, in the QFs in Sherbrooke, in a tightly contested match:

Let's hope both of them will record considerable progress this year.

He's big and strong, great serving, let's hope he'll keep his mobility up.

Good luck for today's final, Milos!

SPOILER: Dancevic vs. Nalbandian

Unfortunately, the match won't probably be shown anywhere in North America:

F. Dancevic 6 6 6
D. Nalbandian 4 2 4

Well, this was a well-deserved Wild-Card if there ever was one:)

The greatest singles result by a Canadian in quite a while ....

Net: 25 of 35 = 71 %

Next Bobby Reynolds. Go, Frank!
