Apple released several new iPods on Wednesday. I'm tempted to buy them all but will try to restrain myself from going crazy. I'm thinking about getting the 160 GB iPod so I can store all my music and video, etc. I really like the new Nanos which now play video. The touch iPod looks just like the iPhone and can do everything the iPhone can do except make and receive calls. Just curious what you guys were thinking about getting.

The new Nano looks very nice with the bigger screen and video. Since it is the same price I think the new Nano is a good deal, but storage is still not high enough. It would be nice to have a 20+ gig flash-based player.

I have a 1st gen Zune, and it has been very solid. Microsoft should be releasing flash based Zunes soon so I'm going to wait to check them out before picking up another Ipod.

I purchased my 1st iPod over 5 years ago. I have owned over a dozen different iPods since then. My sister just bought the 80 GB Classic as well. She was using my Mini. Your 80 GB will hold about 20,000 songs which is about 2,000 CD's in addition to videos, podcasts, photos, etc. I use iTunes but have never liked it very much. There are lots of 3rd party software you can use with your iPod. You will find that managing a large music collection on your iPod can be quite a challenge. iTunes is fine for new users. I purchase stuff on iTunes on occasion but not frequently. Usually if something is only available on iTunes as they have a lot of exclusive content. Welcome to the digital world. I hope you enjoy your new iPod.

P.S. ipodlounge.com is a great site for iPod users.

ipodlounge...i might have checked this site out if it's message forums. i just did a quick google search for ipod forums and briefly checked this one site out but i didn't get the name. what other places do you go to for music?

do you use limewire? i have imported a song or two into my itnunes library and synced it to my ipod but i deleted the file because i was afraid i was doing something illegal:D do you use your ipods with video more for video or audio? i listen to such a wide range of music so owning the ipod is a real convenience...right now i'm just deciding which songs i want to buy as just audio and which as video (hope that makes sense)

i just got a 60gb black video ipod. i love it, no way would i trade it for one of the new ones. i did see them and they are pretty cool, but if i were to get a different ipod then i would probably get the 80gb or that 160gb one, although i don't think that i even need that much storage capacity

Ipodlounge does have their own forum. You need to register just like any other forum. No...I don't use Limewire or any other underground P2P sites. I have thousands of CD's and hundreds of DVD's and don't condone illegal filesharing and/or downloading.

I wouldn't get the new nano because 98% of the time I use it is either when I'm working out or driving with my fm transmitter. Both times I can't look at a screen, and I'd be worried about moisture getting into the LCD at the gym as I get pretty sweaty doing stairs.

I have the newest version of the Ipod Shuffle and love it. It is so light and small you never know it's there. Plus I have Shure E2C earbuds which are awesome.

Yeah a good set of buds are a requirement with any portable player. I just got the ok 50$ sony in ears and it made a world of difference. Worth the portable player flat tax to get really great sound on the go.

I've got a 2G nano and a 30g reg IPod and also a 40g Toshiba Gigabeat which I use with napster to go. i'll keep using these until something breaks. i've got several thousand tracks and a pretty big audio book library..all backed up to an external HD. iPods are seriously overpriced but their interface sure is elegant...reason alone to prefer the iPod

Lafayette I'm going to look up those Shures'...they sound expensive :0 If so, would there really be a big improvement over my 20 dollar Sennheisers?

I've heard the 20$ Sennheisers and to me the bass isn't as good as my sony's or the Shures, but they are a huge improvement over the stock white buds. And all sound gear is deminishing returns. I'd say any headphones over 50-70 are the same except for some "wizardry"(noise canceling etc.)
it's 100% preference and opinion. some like more base etc.

Hi guys..thanks for the help. I have the Mx500's..they're blue and have an inline volume control, and I think they were even less than 20. They do sound infinitely better than stock earbuds, but i dont know how much I will gain by going up to the Shure's which I see are around 50. i also see they are noise cancelling and the demo indicates that works really well.
My current ones have shorts at the jack and the slider, so time for something new..Now i am wondering if the Shures cancel the noise well enough where i can wear them cutting grass or hopefully even while running my gas edger whose muffler fell off..when i run that sucker all the neighbours come out to see whats going on :O also wondering if you can control how much noise canceliing you get by positioning them in diff ways in your ears?
I listen to lots of rockin blues, old rock, and some jazz mostly and I like accurate speakers, but not too forward sounding..solid and tight but not thumpy base

For that purpose I'd say get any of the headphones with nice soft silicone in ear buds. Most come with diff sized silicone and you should be able to get a nice snug fit. Mine for example with buds in and volume off, you can tell someone is talkign to you but you can't understand them, with music up the world is dead to you.... which is actually bad when I jog I always leave one off because I can't hear what's going on around me and that makes me nervous. I think noise canceling circuitry etc. is 95% gimick.

I have a 4 GB Nano and was thinking about the Touch 16 GB. A coworker has one coming in at the end of the month so I'll be able to see it in use. Don't know how usable the wireless browsing is which is what I want it for.

We have a fairly new MacBook Pro for our son. I'm thinking of picking up a few more when they come with Penryns.

True, somewhat. With iPods you also get to choose from thousands upon thousands of 3rd party accessories. I found this out when looking for stuff for my Zune, and found almost zilch. The iPod also has the slick touch wheel, which is a love or hate feature, and now the touch screen. And lastly, the iTunes software is a sweet interface for synching music/video/podcasts/etc.

Post of the thread! :)

If you haven't got the technique you'll find them heavy.

I have an 8GB Nano (the black one), before that I had an original 20GB Ipod for about 5yrs. They are great. Don't think I'll be upgrading though

i haven't used my new classic at all. i've just been building up my library by importing cds and the last couple days I have been purchasing music videos. music videos are a little bit harder to find for the songs i want but to jus get the song itself, there are so many to choose from!!!! itunes seems really easy to use so far but i'm starting to wish it was on a subscription basis. i'm going to be purchasing a lot of songs:D

does anyone have pics of their headphones or cases they use with their ipods? i'll be getting those next:)

I checked out the new models yesterday at the Apple store. I was definitely impressed with the nano and the quality of its video playback. I can start putting tennis highlight reels and matches on that bad boy

only thing i like about the ipods is their huge aftermarket support. You can basically get any accessory that you can think of. They look cool too, but I'm so stuck on my Axim X51v though. I'm such a huge all-in-one kind of guy

Hmmm, I'm either getting an iPhone or and iPod touch, more likely the touch, unless the iPhone gets GPS capability.

does teh touch have builtin gps? navigator software? If yes it's worth the price just for that I was pricing portable gps for my wife she's a real estate agent and
they were between $230-500.

anyone have any thoughts on these Altec Lansings? ---> http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/ipod/review/altec-lansing-uhp301-snugfit-earbuds/
something seems wrong to me about the Shure's....they are immensely popular compared to these, but that doesnt always mean much and the Amazon reviews were mixed on the Shures' and absent on the Altec Lansings.

i'm answering my own questions and conducting my own earbud experiments :0

i had silicone thingies from a Jabra phone ear set which fit nicely over the earbuds from my Gigabeat...after some experimenting I found the size that worked the best. It did eliminate some external noise and the sound quality was better <especially the bass response> since the buds were farther inside my ear. The buds that came with my Gigabeat sound good...i'll just use them this way...

No GPS. If you want GPS, go with Garmin. I have an iQue 3600 that I bought when they first came out and it still works great. Garmin has a variety of models available. The thing that I like about Garmin is that they provide and service all of the pieces so you don't get finger pointing if you have a problem.

I popped in an Apple store today, quite unplanned. I was blown away by the video quality. I'm tempted to get one, but I'll probably stick with my 4 G mini. I use it for jogging, biking, treadmill, and sometimes in the office. I don't watch much tube or movies, and if I did, I'd watch on my big TV.

Yeah beyond the cool factor I'm not sure who they are targeting the nano to. Most people I know use it 95%+ at the gym/excercising. I have a 8GB Nano, and love it/think it's great. Truth is due to moisture and the display I think I would get one w/o the display anyway.

Now when the 2nd Gen iTouch comes out I'm all over that!! Especially if they add a good PhoneBook/datebook/calendar that can be synced with outlook so I can ditch my PDA.

first thing i did with my ipod touch was load it up with tennis highlight clips....nothing better than watching federer highlights....but on an ipod touch....with that full screen wide screen display....oh my goodness...:)

hack it! ;) after how overwhelmed apple will get with the hackers, they will have to settle for putting a mail client and some pda type stuff on the ipod touch...and of course send out a software update to the 1st generation users like microsoft did with their 2nd generation zunes towards 1st generation users :)

We got the Touch Thursday and it's a great product. I just use Google Calendar, Email and Address Book on the Touch. I prefer to have net applications so that I can share calendars with other people. But I have WiFi in a lot of the places that I go. I know a few guys with the iPhone and it's nice but the data plan is pricey.

The iPhone Touch can play YouTube Videos (we've done this) and other videos (haven't done this) and generally surf the web. Apple has about 200 additional applications now which isn't a huge number but at least they have an RPN scientific calculator and a graphing calculator. I expect more apps to come out over time. The Touch has to be a huge seller for Apple. I found it hard to find a store that had them in stock.

As to the main use of the Touch: it isn't to play music while working out. We have iPod Nanos for that and they work great. This thing is most useful to me for surfing the web.
