Federer doesnt break strings?

When asked in Deuce Magazine, when he last broke a string
"During practice in Dubai. In a match? It hasn't happened very often. I think it may have happened once last year when I hit the knot, but I can't remember at which tournament"
Is this because he changes recquet alot during a match?

He basically changes rackets every nine games so you wouldn't expect him to break strings. Sampras is the last player I remember who consistently broke strings. Sampras used extra thin guage gut and didn't change rackets every ball change.

He doesn't break strings, simply, because HE USES STRING SAVERS! I can't believe he didn't mention that.

Gents,

You are also forgetting that during tournaments Fed (like most of the top players) restrings all of his racquets every day or two, so very little oppurtunity to break freshly strung racquets.

Additionally most of these guys play with a mix of poly and gut---again decreasing the chance of breaking strings in 8 games.

break strings? they are not like us who use the same strings for weeks and months.
and Federer uses 16-gauge strings, much stronger than 17 gauge.

Correct me if I'm wrong. They change balls every four games and thus Federer changes his racquet every four game ?

He uses leather pads as well, no? I believe they also prolong string life. I tried them once and for the life of me could NOT break the strings. I'm a frequent string breaker, but with the leather pads, I had to cut the strings out for the first time ever because the strings had lost all their tension.

I'm sure Federer restrings his racquets often enough even when he's practicing to not break strings. He probably plays with each stringjob during practice and has each of his "practice" racquets restrung for his next practice. He's probably so used to the way his gut/poly setup plays that even when the poly goes a little dead he can tell.

In matches I thought he changed racquets the first seven games and then every nine games to correlate with ball changes. But I think if his opponent is serving the 6th game or the 8th game before ball changes he will change racquets for his return. Could be wrong but I thought that's what he does.

That is when he has to serve. Otherwise it is when they replace the balls. He does not like to serve with new balls rightaway.

You forgot to mention that his service is merely a means to get the ball in to play, so his serve is very weak too :mrgreen:

Fed hits as hard as anyone out there; probably, harder than 95% of them. FH has a nice balance of topspin and straightline speed; he needs to change nothing in that department. And regarding his BH, it does lack consistency, but, on a good day, it's, probably, the best out there. So, yes, consider yourself flamed.

He strings at pretty low tension. It's not like Sampras used to with his full gut job strung at 70+ lbs.

You sometimes hear commentators talk about ball changes at "7 and 9".

The first ball change is after 7 games then it's every 9 games thereafter, but NOT if the ball change occurs on a tiebreak.

The reason for the first change at 7 is due to the ball usage for the warm-up.

I believe he never serves with both a new racquet and brand new balls.

no flames, just the fact that his forehand has been clocked at 100 mph and is able to produce more passing shots with his backhand then everyone except nadal who is on par with him.

for a "topspinny, bad backhand" player - hes not doing too bad.
