This video is ridiculous

How could anyone make a call on watching a 10 second vid with 2 strokes? All I'm saying, is my club pro thought by watching nearly 2 minutes of a match that they were over rated based on NTRP rating scale. We have held plenty of tournaments, and these guys would get nowhere in a 3.5 tournament. They can't even keep the ball in play!

Dude, you need to relax a little. No need to start calling people names and such. It's just tennis.

Rickson, did you see Tank get KO'd? Wait till Kimbo fights a real MMA guy.

guitarplayer: I just don't understand your position. How does he know how they would fare against other players? Saying "no higher than" means they *cannot* be higher than a certain rating. It is a stupid statement to make, when he could simply say something like "They seem to be 3.0's or lower."

Yes I did and I also believe Kimbo is not ready for a true mma fighter. There's no question that Kimbo's a tough guy, but I certainly question his mma skills against a skilled opponent.

To get some actual tennis discussion back into this thread (thought we all care about... whatever you guys are talking about;))

I would just like to point out that the far guy in the "3.5 #2" video looks to me more like a very good 3.5, so there is definitely some room for interpretation. Some high, some low, but they're all right around the same level.

This video has been posted before and a long discussion ensued. Do a search if you want to read all the comments. This is USTA in New Jersey. I have no idea how good the tennis is there. One of the guys in the 3.5 video just moved up from 3.0 if I remember correctly. But the guy who posted them is from this forum and verified that they were from USTA matches.

I didn't analyze the videos all that closely, but I think the #2 guys are better than the #1 guys. Alot of players like these have baffled me during my time. Often times people look really easy to beat when you watch them play, but once you're on the court playing them, its a whole different story. Alot of them are good at feeding off other's pace, so maybe when its pusher vs. pusher they look even more terrible because neither of them has any pace to work with.

I wonder how I would fend against these guys.. hahaha.

That guy really does seem like a jerk though :|

Maybe they're not playing straight up...lots of teams don't play straight up...

The 3.5 video IS ridiculous...but the 4.0 guy I cant tell. If he can make his forehand in 18/20 times with decent, even below avg pace, I think he can reach the 4.0 status. It's not how many winners someone can hit, its how little unforced errors that make them win.

I wonder what part of the country these guys are in?

The 3.5 guy looks more like a 2.5 in California, where I am. The guy he's playing against looks like it might be the first time he's ever picked up a racquet.

The 4.0 guy looks more like a 3.0 or 3.5 at best in California.

After seeing these videos, I'm pretty convinced I'd be rated higher in most other parts of the country.

if i said i was a 4.0 player and have been playing tennis for 3 months, could i have been proffesional?
How about if I put it this way, not even Federer was a 4.0 player after only 3 months.

I know guys that have been playing for 30 years and still are not up to 4.0 yet.

Just wondering, BP....

Seriously, Is it possible that someone who starts playing in his 20's or 30's, could after 3 months of regular play be a 3.5 or 4.0.

Some people are pretty coordinated or graceful, while others (as you mentioned) can play all their lives and still play embarrassingly.

This isn't a very good point though.

I was a pretty good junior, did very well in my region for both USTA... Yet some guy came out of *nowhere*, having never played tennis before, and reached (eventually surpassing) my level within a month or so. Some people pick up the game very quickly. Others don't.

Sentinel: I would assume if this guy did it, an athletic (he was very athletic) 20-30 year old could do it.

Well like I said in my earlier post- Maverick1 who posts on these forums posted these vids from a USTA league match in New Jersey. Mercer county Tennis Center, West Windsor, NJ to be exact.

It is funny that Raiden is analyzing the vid and doesn't remember himself posting about it earlier. Maverick stated he had a 3.5 computer rating and in fact challenged Raiden to a match since they lived pretty close. I don't think they ever played though. I went back to the original thread and it appears that some of the posts have been deleted. There were a bunch of members from the MidAtlantic TW section calling these players 2.5s even though they had never played USTA match.

Yes, I know. :)

But even if he picked up tennis when he was 20, he wouldn't have been a 4.0 player in only 3 months. There's no way to develop your strokes and footwork, and more importantly, your tactics, strategy, variety, and mental tennis aptitude to be able to beat other 4.0 players consistently in such a short period of time.

The thing is, it's nearly impossible to pick up all of the mental aspects of the game within only 3 months, even if you're a good athlete. Knowing where, when, and how to hit the ball in any match situation only comes with experience. An experienced pusher will beat a beginner almost every time.

Well, I and the players he competed with weren't exactly slouches. He did well in juniors immediately, and went to a D1 school less than 4 years after picking up a racquet (if I remember correctly). Last I heard he played #2 singles his Junior year, and was probably going to play #1 his senior year. It is certainly a (very) rare occurence, but it can happen.

I know of two guys who are upper 30s who picked up tennis and within 6 - 9 months are at 3.5 level. One I know played baseball and the other I don't know much about. But both have solid serves with alot of pace and spin and good placement, good groundstrokes, but aren't so good at playing the net.

Lots of guys play in the 3.5 level who shouldn't be there. The reason??? because the league or tournament doesn't have enough **REAL** 3.5 players, so they just throw them in.

Back in high school this exchange student came from Finland and he had never picked up a racket. He was a volleyball player. He started playing in December and by June he was a legit 4.0. He made second-third on the ladder and I saw him beat a couple of kids that had been taking lessons for years.

I guess some people take to tennis very naturally.

You really don;t want to take this outside...it's like 65 degrees outside...that means i'll be dressed up like an Eskimo in the dead of an Alaskan winter....and that means, good luck getting through my ARMOR! Im gonna go out looking sumo wrestler wearing a parka over my down jacket...all i would have to do is sit on you and i'll win!

And your making me blush...too bad smoothness doesn't really translate into goodness...well at least when i miss, i look good doing it!

Man, at 65 F, I would play naked! It's -13 C outside right now and even that's WARM!

From my experience, the smoother the stroke and the more effortless the motion, the more ridiculous the player. Shots are heavier and deceivingly faster. I see you in this category. It's the guys that are muscling the shot and making it look like they're hitting it with their all that I'm not afraid of. Generally, they're all bark and no bite.

Well if i had to choose my backhand or Roddick's...i would choose Andy's! then again, he is like a foot taller and outweighs me by like 100 lbs lol

I was gonna say, you should model your game after Agassi's. I see elements of his game in yours, namely the rhythm. I had posted a comment on your latest vid with the vid of Agassi, but it never went through. Search "agassi srugo" on youtube and maybe you'll see what I'm talking about.

Beat yea to it...i have it saved on my youtube page a long time ago...i think i even commented on it too...i love the comment that said something to the effect of andre's groundies sound like its a bomb going off each time he hits it. I do like to stay right on top of that baseline...I did take a couple of new vids today...but its just more rallying and i didn't have a tripod...I've never had anyone say my game reminds them of agassi's.

It's cool to see how Andre doesn't even look like he is trying that hard and you can just tell that Harel is giving it all he's got (but trying to look like he isn't) just to stay (which he wasn't) with Andre...

When i was about 10 years old i took a few tennis lessons(about 10 hours total). I didnt after that until now. I played 90% of those 90 days and am definatly not a 3.5 player! Both of my older sisters were #1 and #2 singles and doubles in high school. I can whip them

these guys look like those bum high school teams that you play and are easy wins to tack on to tour record. i can play lefty and beat them.

Thats not really saying a whole lot. A 3.5 male would probably be a state champion if he played high schools girls tennis.

I'm not sure if you're alluding to the fact that I said they weren't 3.5s in the past or something. I remember this video a long time ago and remember talking to Maverick about trying to arrange to play. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have discredited these players because I knew the first time it was posted that it was legit USTA play, and I have always been of the mindset that players in videos are often underrated by TW users here. Although I think that trend is starting to change around here compared to how it was a year ago.

It wasn't you who was saying these players were 2.5, it was others. Since you have been playing a lot of USTA, I think you actually have a good idea of what the levels look like and how you can see bad or unorthodox technique even up to the 4.5 levels.

But I do remember maverick wanting to set up a match. Actually you guys should play since you are probably about the same level now?
