Gut main/ poly cross hybrid, what tensions?

Zach

Semi-Pro
Generally, you would string the gut higher than your normal tension, because of its' elasticity, and the poly lower than your normal tension, because of its' lack of elasticity. Play around with it and see what you like. People may have great success with say, 62/59 combo and suggest it to you, you may hate it. String suggestion and tension is always by someone else's preferences, remember that.

Recommended range is 45-60lbs. How many lbs or percentage tighter should the mains be?

What string and tension did you use and like before this?

And which gut/poly string are you going to use ?

What type of players are you? Do you like to volley or you are a baseliner ?

I would recommend you to go 5-10% higher tension on gut mains. VS gut is the most powerful string. So something like 58 lbs. This assumes you know your reference tension accurately. Otherwise go with 5% higher than the middle of recommended tension range of your racquet.

Pro hurricane tour is somewhat softer than Luxilons. I would go 5% lower than usual. So something like 52-53 lbs. (Again it assumes your reference tension is correct. Otherwise 5% off from the "middle" tension.)

Reflection angle of gut string bed is different from synthetics. Don't be surprised if you find lots of your shots going long. You will need some time to adjust to natural gut. To me, it was safer to go tighter. I would also recommend go tighter for baseliners but it all defends on your preference. Anyway, don't be afraid to add 1-2 lbs to my recommended tension. VS natural gut will be harder to control initially....

Good luck.

^^^ Thanks fastdunn. So you don't think 10% lower for PHT on the crosses is too low? I mean I've heard that polys lose tension alot faster than gut.
