Remedies for restoring tackiness to overgrips

I typically get about 4 days worth of playing before my overgrips (Yonex Supergrap) completely lose their tackiness. Once this happens, I change overgrips, but feel this is a waste of money because other than the loss of tackiness, the overgrips are perfectly fine.

Is there something I can do to the overgrip to make it tacky again? (Any products or home remedies)

If not, can anyone suggest an overgrip with the same quality as the Yonex but that retains its tackiness longer?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.:)

Just switch to ProSupex Super tacky overgrip, it lasts like 5-6 matches.

i have never tried any remedies for this problem, only because it seems like more of a hassle than it is a help. i use supergrap too, and it is only a dollar per grip right? so if you are getting 4 days out of it i think it is money well spent.

i have, however, flipped supergrap and tournagrip over when i didn't have another grip with me. it gives you a bit better grip than the old worn out side, but isn't quite up to par and doesn't last too long. maybe you can flip it after the 4th day to get one more day out of it. but like i said, hardly even worth the trouble.

There's an adage you may not have heard of: "Mend, don't spend" :)
I would agree with this in some cases but not when it comes to something as inexpensive as overgrips. Seems to me that the time you would invest in trying to do this offsets any money you would save.

there are a few things out there you can use. Prince makes a spray for this, you can also use a rosin bag, and they is also a very tacky cloth but I can't remember the name of it right off the bat. But if you really want to know the name let me know and I can look it up.

I've used those Yonex overgrips..

1st they are the worst overgrips I have ever used.

the lose their tackiness.
they feel like sandpaper and chaff your hands.

Gamma and Babolat original are very good.

Gamma especially, they are very thin but retain it's life quite well.
cheers!

That tacky cloth is called Gorilla Grap and it works great but you have to use it VERY sparingly. Conjures up images of Chevy Chase in "Christmas Vacation" where he gets tree sap on his hands and rips the pages of the magazine he's reading. It's just like that.

I use a normal hand creme and voila, the Supeegrap feels alive again.

If you want a super tacky overgrip that lasts well, but only works for people with dry hands, then get the Gamma Supreme overgrip in white.

I played once with a guy that put spray deodorant on his grip. He said it was very tacky. After shaking his hand after the match I would have to agree. It felt like he had honey on his hand. Gives me chills again thinking about that.

I have heard of others using a tack rag. You can buy them at hardware stores. They are used to remove all sawdust before you finish woodwork.

These two options may provide more tack than you want though.

Go Lendl.

Fill your pockets with sawdust. Rub your grip with it after every point. Be sure to sprinkle some extra sawdust where your opponent sets up to serve.

Another very effective way to restore tackiness to overgrips is to get $1 from your bank account or credit card and buy a new one. That’s the best remedy to the problem

The problem with that solution is I can't find grips that are tacky enough! Everything is low on tack even when advertised as tacky

I have tried a lot of overgrips but always come back to the Wilson Pro. My hands don't sweat that bad so I don't like a super tacky grip. I have heard good things from friends on Tourna and they do make a supertack overgrip.

Yea wilson pro isn't sticky doesn't grab your hand back for superior control. Its just a bland regular overgrip

I used this a while ago. Not necessarily tacky but it did enhance the grip by keeping the hands drier for longer. Probably will help extend that 4 day SuperGrap life-span

As someone who strings their pals racquets this whole thread is icky.

Come on man, how can someone be so cheap as to not just replace their overgrips they are pretty dang cheap for a reason. If you are that cheap buy in bulk and save. They are roughly the price of a pack of gum. Please don't start a thread on the reuse of that!

I play with Supergrap as they are the best I have tried with Wilson Pro being a close second.

Neither of those are a solution they don't grab you back like when megatac is rarely super sticky

Dont forget to pluck at your eyelids and lashes every point to get out the stray bits of sawdust......

I love a very tacky overgrip, as long as it's not hot and humid. When I want tacky, I go for tourna mega tac, definitely the tackiest grip I've ever used. I used to use Wilson pro or Yonex super grap, but the tourna is significantly tackier. I have not, however, found any method (towel, powder, gel, etc) that has been worth it to restore tackiness to an overgrip. My suggestion if you really feel you need to save a little money: buy in bulk (30-packs) and just deal with the loss in tackiness when training, but for matches (and the practice or two leading up to matches/tournaments) make sure to use fresh overgrips.

There are two products that will do this. I know because I only change my overgrip a couple of times per year.
1) Rosin. Buy a rock rosin bag. Google ROCK ROSIN BAG. Don’t buy the powder crap. Use the bag at crossovers when your hands are sweaty.

2) The other option is a tack towel. If you use this, prepare to never have your racquet slip ever again. These things are like pine tar and they STICK. They’re too much for me but others may like them.

And use it from the other end as well.
In humidity I switch to Volkl v-dry.
Switch racquets at changeovers and wristbands.
Anti perspiration lotions.

I have to share my experience to restore tackiness to the overgrips > put the filthy dirty used overgrips for 30 days in a resealable plastic bags in the freezer. On the day 31st they are ready to reuse like new!!

Back to the future....I went back to the blue Gauze Tape and stopped worrying about cracking my expensive racquet after losing my grip on Mega tac or whatever....Much better all over again.. That shiite is wacky tacky, cheap and grips you back.....will give you a callous but who cares....

There are home stringers posting about wanting to purchase racquet performance tuning stations that cost thousands of dollars thinking there is a potential ROI/Payback from their customers. This thread is exactly why I wouldn't make this investment.

liquid chalk wont make the grip tacky, it will only dry out your hands if they're sweaty to help from sweat slippage.
tacky towels like one gamma makes will help temporarily, but it wont revitalize the original tackiness.

All in all, chalk to keep hands dry, but you have to keep reapplying. Just remember that once you add the chalk, it will cover the grip and any inherent tackiness will be gone. If your hands aren't sweaty, then a quick wipe of the tacky towel will make it tacky for a bit. At the very least, it will prolong the use of a grip for a couple more sessions.

To slow down the hand sweatiness on the grip during the match, i always switch my racquet to the other hand in between plays and only grab the throat. More time for air to dry the grip and my hand.

Just thought of another option, although i haven't tried it. Spray hairspray on the grip. Something like Aqua net hairspray. May be worth a shot?

Honestly, with all the stuff we throw away in tennis (balls, strings,...) I think it's pretty good to think of a slightly ecological solution when we can. It's not just about money. There are several interesting solutions proposed in this thread, which seem to be good alternatives that are easy to implement rather than constantly throwing and replacing.
Btw, I'm pretty happy with Tourna Tac. It has a pretty durable tackiness (in my hands at least).
