I have been using an aeropro drive and like the spin potential and large sweet spot, the only thing is the racquet may be to light for me. I hit with a friends heavier racquet and enjoyed the solid and stable feel when plowing threw the ball.

how do i know if i need a heavier racquet?
How do i know how heavy?
and what are the advantages/disadvantages
should i be using the most weight i can handle that doesn't slow down my strokes?

btw i am a varsity high school player that will begin playing college tennis this summer. I use a western grip and am mostly a baseliner...but will volley when needed.

When i first got my APDC i was in the same mindset as you. I leaded up my racquet at 9 and 3 and put enough lead inside my handle to make it head light. It was about 12.4 oz when i was done. I hit with it for about 2 weeks and decided to take the lead off at 9 and 3 and keep the lead in the handle. After hitting with a heavier racquet i appreciated the lighter feel, but i still like to keep the lead inside the handle to keep it more head light and it gives it the extra "whip" factor when swinging. I suggest doing two 6 inch strips of lead on each side and counter balance it in the handle. Experiment with your APDC because it is a great racquet!

As you are a varsity player that will be playing tournament, I don't actually suggest changing it as winning match is at stake, but since now the summer is over and if your tennis season is over, you can actually tried some racquet here, see how heavy a racquet you can handle, as being able to handle a heavier stick at the same swingspeed can be beneficial to your stroke ( assuming the stick playing characteristic suits you ), simple physics here. And every racquet expert will recommend playing a heaviest stick you can handle without slowing down and becoming tired.

You need a heavier racquet if you are facing ultra fast pace and heavy spin shot, and finding your current stick not stable enough . As lighter racquet will makes you feel that you are being push around.

And i think if your area have demo service, you can actually start demoing racquet now as you can only know how heavy you can handle by demoing.

Also take into consideration that he may not even like heavier racquets, i suggest to lead up or demo a heavier racquet first. You may decide just to stay to light racquets.

i've been debating with some people whether to switch to a 12oz+ players frame.

Big jump from stock APDC to 12 oz+ stick, especially if you drop down to a mid. Why not play with leading-up the APDC before making the change. Not saying you should not change, but you might be better off getting some directional info beforehand. Just my 2 cents...

ok thanks for the advice. i recently added 5 grams to 3 and 9 positions combined and 5 grams in the handle to balance it. I liked how it felt but didn't get to hit against someone who hits with heavy pace.

so general rule go with as heavy as a racquet that doesn't tire your arm or slow down your swing speed much?
