Cyber Flash on the cross....

I did some searching, but could not get a defintive answer. I just ordered a mini-reel of Cyber Flash 17L (based on the advice of Hoodjem and ...crap forgot who else). I want to cross it with Babolat VS 17. I will string the Babolat @ 60 lbs. But how low can I go with the Cyber Flash? I was thinking 52 lbs...is this too much of a difference?? Thanks for any advice up front.

I normally (at least the past 8 months) have gone with Klip 17 main @ 58 lbs and Gosen Sheep cross @ 55 lbs.

I want to raise the tension a few pounds on the Babolat, but never used CF on a cross, so I don't really know. Hence this thread.:)

Interesting. I use CF on the mains and gosen micro 18g on the crosses, but have wondered how CF would act as a cross-string. Let us know if you try this and what you think of it.

I wouldn't recommend going with more than a 6lb difference between mains & crosses in fear of damaging the frame.
I used to play with a gut/poly hybrid but found playability with that setup was great initially but declined exponentially; I believe the problem can be traced to the different rate of tension loss between gut and poly strings.
An "x" difference in tension between the main & cross becomes invariably wider in margin the more you play with the setup. My recommendation is to keep the tension difference between main & cross minimal in a gut/poly hybrid if you want it to play well over the long haul.
Personally, I would go with a setup like VS @ 56/ CF @ 54. Good luck.

My current set up is Klip Legend 18 m @ 58 lbs and Technifibre Spinfire c @ 55 lbs. I have used them at least 8 hours each and the cross string is holding up very well. That is Spinfire. I would assume (based on the reviews) that CF would last much longer. The problem is the Babolat. I need to tame the gut. I am concerned going down to 56 lbs. Has anyone actually used this set up??

The new information about Spinfire definitely changes things...
I can understand the need to drop the cross tension going from a synthetic gut (Gosen) to a poly (Cyberflash)...but if you're already fine with using a poly like Spinfire in the cross @ 55, there's no need to drop to 52lb when swapping in Cyberflash. If anything, stringbed firmness should be similar at same tension (55 lbs) with the added benefit of improved tension maintenance.
I previously used a Wilson Natural Gut (rebranded Babolat) - BB Alu hybrid in K90's strung @ 58/56. From my experience, you definitely need to be mindful of the tension loss in the poly cross as it affects stringbed firmness and control.
Best of luck.

I’ve been using CF 17 as the cross with PSGD 16 mains for the last few months. Before that, I used Gosen Polyon Ice17 and other stiff polys like Prince Tournament as a cross and always lowered the tension by 2 lbs compared to the mains. With CF, I’ve found I like it much better at the same tension as the mains. At least with PSGD, they seem to wear perfectly together before the mains break.

Yes, but you have to remember that crosses feel tighter then mains because there are A). More of them and B). Less total length. If you string Gosen crosses at 55 lbs normally, I would lower the crosses to 52 lbs, and to make sure you don't warp the racquet, lower the mains to 57-58 lbs. Then you can work your way from there.

I use a Big Ace 16/PSGD 16 hybrid in the mains and crosses respectively. Since Big Ace is often compared to Cyber Flash, thought I'd chime in. My previous setup was all PSGD at 60 lbs. I've been stringing the new hybrid at 60 lbs. and I really like the feel of it. I tried a Luxilon BB 16/PSGD 16 hybrid for a few matches at 54/60 lbs. but I did not like that setup.

I string the exact same setup (17g Klip Natural main, 17L CF cross) in a friend's Microgel Prestige Mid, and I'm stringing them both @ 60.

I considered dropping the crosses, but the first time I strung his I did them the same & he liked it. I'm sure you already know this, but that is a very easy racket to string, BTW. I saw 18x20, in a mid, w/ caps and thought 'oh crap, this is going to suck'. But it was sooo easy.

I also string that setup in my Fischer M-Comp, but both @ 58.

However, if you drop the crosses, let me know how it feels. I've been reluctant to change anything since I'm playing pretty good at the moment.

These are my only racquets I don't string because of the caps...they are easy to string???

I won't know for a few weeks at least (strings are still good currently). I may do a 60m-57c.

Yeah, shockingly they are. The racket/grommets must be made for a 2-piece string job, because I had 0 difficulty threading the ends through for all 4 tie-offs. Maybe using 17 & 17L gauge string helped, but I've had a harder time w/ other rackets that don't have caps, and I string many rackets as hybrids.

In the RSI table for all strings, Cyberflash and Spinfire both come out 230-240lbs/in stiffness depending on gauge so I would imagine using the same tension difference main to cross you should be fine.

EDIT: I'm interested in hearing your results though as I'm also about (next stringjob) to experiment with Klip Legend mains and a variety of poly crosses

Well this helps alot, thanks Ori!! I could still go 58/53.

I won't be using Klip for a while. I have 4 packs of Babolat VS and I don't break string..so they will last quite a while.

On my Prince Speedport Black (a very powerful racquet with a 16x19 string pattern) I use Klip Legend 16 in the mains and Cyber Blue 17 in the crosses, both strung at 60lbs and the setup plays great. A lot of power with great control. Cyber Blue is a little softer and more powerful than Cyberflash. For my KBlade 98 (same string pattern and headsize as the Prestige), I have ordered a couple of sets of Cyber Blue 17L. I will cross the Cyber Blue 17L with Babolat VS Team17 on the mains. I am planning to string both strings at mid-tension (for K98 - 55 lbs). It is my opinion that for the Prestige the Cyber Blue in a 17g or 17L will be the better string. Hope this helps and did not offend anyone.

^^thanks for the information I was born in Toronto by the way). I am looking for lower power so that is why I wanted poly as a cross. I wanted a good poly for a good price, so the CF seems to be the ticket. I was also interested in CB, but like you said its more powerful than CF and I am looking for lower power. I figure the gut (babolat) will be more than powerful enough...thanks again.:)

No worries, thank Hoodjem, he hooked me up with the link a while back, makes comparisons easy

Let me know how it goes all the same, I've yet to see anyone try it in a cross and I'd like to get an opinion

Head MG Prestige MP. so an 18X20 string pattern.

One of my hitting partners use those; excellent sticks.
What a coincidink...make that three TO guys on this thread! :)
Anyhow, thought I'd chime in my opinion that Octavianus' setup has a lot of promise.
I recently strung two of K90's with full setups of Cyberblue (16 & 17L). I found Cyberblue more comfortable and offered more feel (especially at net) than Cyberflash.
I had previously read claims that Cyberblue was too powerful but finding that claim isn't necessarily true. The power is more similar to a stiffer synthetic gut and raising tension does a lot to curtailing excessive power.
Personally, having played both CF & CB...I would choose to insert CB in the cross; the 16 gauge CB would probably work better as it isn't overly powerful and less prone to saw the gut mains. More importantly, Cyberblue would maintain the feel & ball pocketing of the gut strings as opposed to take away those attributes in my view.
My .02 worth:
VS Gut @ 60 - CB 16 @ 58

Good luck.

SG on Crosses or Mains

Hi, i'm considering the same cross CF with Gossen OG or Big Ace with Gossen...in any case, this would be my first try.
I see some of you setup the Poly on the Mains and others on th crosses.
What would be the difference?
