my NCAA picks were AWESOME.. until i changed them at last minute. (dumb miss st. and BYU!!) p.s - i liked watching Butler... that big white kid Howard, was really good. plus he sorta looks like me if i was 6'8" tall and 230lbs.

thx for the reviews of our games Sup.
if i can learn to swing through the forehand without wristing the ball, i will be very happy. if i could open up the court by hitting some angles to that side, it would make the game a lot easier.

tfm - your backhand form looks great, but i couldn't believe how fast you were swinging at the ball even on the short ball drill.

magma - nice backhand volley at the net when i blasted one at you. which begs the question... why am i not the one at the net... hrmmm.

jrs - that serve is sweet. i know you want to blast serves more, but i would kill for a spin/kick serve that i could move around the box. i definitely heard the "brush" noise when you were practicing.. and mine sounds nothing like that so i know i have a lot of work to do on my kicker.

jrk - needs a spin serve SO BADLY. if he bent his knees a little more and brushed up at the ball from left to right... and didn't think at all about pace, he would demolish most ACTA people. but the double faults crush his game. i was shocked when we were trading forehands and his movement was much better than mine and soon i would cough up a short ball. plz, for the love of god, get that 2nd ball IN. take lessons from Sup. get a ball hopper and use your courts every night.... don't waste your youth and your talent! now is the time to get it right!

i also need to practice hitting harder for more than 2 shots. JRKs courts were slow enough that i think they could be helpful to work on just trading big forehands. let's hit there again at marshmallow land when you can!

hey sup, thanks for letting me hang out with you yesterday. you're awesome. that was one tough half hour, i was sweating like crazy. those drills and tips were awesome. everything felt so much easier. my volleys and backhand were 100% better. when lent is over, we're going out to dogfish. i'll buy.

btw, did you know who that woman that was sitting to the left of me with the laptop was? her computer was a mess. her laptop was giving her problems, it would just hang for like 10 mins and then go to a blue screen. tfm was trying to fix it but it was hopeless. i wanted to stay and help her out more but i was already late.

She is a mom of one of the juniors. Also an editor for the Post, I think.

Today might be my Ides of March Madness. I'm trailing in one game (Marquette and U-State), another is back and forth (UTenn-Okie State) and, boy, North Dakota State is looking pretty good.

Hey, I know what my tennis game needs - some skill. Ha. And I wouldn't turn down some athletic ability, either, but at my age, that store is closed.

Oh, well, as my old Uncle Dirty Harry once said, "A man's got to know his limitations." :-|

just got back from a 2 hour luncheon with tfm and crew. Overall we laughed about how sh!tty tfm plays and even discussed how on point the suggestions are. etc etc. .we all agree that sup's suggestions will go a long way in improving everyone's game and i'm eager to read more to see if there's anything that i can apply to my buffet happy ways. However something did feel amiss until tfm pointed out that topaz's clinic progression wasn't posted... hmmm.. maybe tfm can write one up for her

My 'Sup' clinic is on Wednesdays...Thursdays I'm at Skyline but with a different pro, I don't actually have clinic with the boys that night. Well, except once, when I butted in because I got booted from my clinic that week.

Though, now that I think of it, I wouldn't mind hearing my progression, too!

Hi all.

Had a fun morning taking little Bri to the library. Good times. Did more running around and picking up pile of books that she pulled off the shelf than reading though.

Coaches log 3/20/09:
JRS: My continued barking for him to "get down" on his backhand may be confusing him. At any moment, I thought he was going to either break dance or do some funky disco move. It still remains to be seen if he really can stay low enough for his one hander. He stays upright and lock his knees too much. He needs to remember, stay low and the swing will bring you up. His forehand has def improved in drills. When he pivots on the left foot and pulls his shoulder through he hits a wicked forehand. Unfortunately we haven't been able to translate that type of forehand into his game play. If he doesn't come out of his shell, and begin to hit corners, he may be in for a slow start this season.

Maybe I'd get low, low, low, low if I had apple-bottom jeans and boots with the fur...... (http://www.imeem.com/knightisme1993/music/oQgTCadH/flo-rida-ft-t-pain-low-flo-rida-feat-t-painwma/)

;)

Ugh - school is killing me. I need to get back in the gym and hit the squats and lunges, but it's not happening. Took me about 2 days for my legs to recover from past Monday's match.

Footwork is killing me right now to. I have to get moving to set up and hit that forehand where I pivot. Might as well be wearing cement shoes.

D the man is such a calm guy. He played D3 ball, and he has a lot of upper body strength. One thing he does simliar to JRS, is that he doesn't get "down low". It effects his play when you guys get him low, especially on the backhand. His volleys need a lot of work. His serve is going to kill him. No literally. He keeps throwing it at 1pm, he'll aggravate "poppy's" condition [end seinfeld reference]. Otherwise, his inconsistency is due in part to his lack of playing. He is coming back from years off. I expect he will just get better, but for now he is def in the mix with you guys.

"D" was really smashing the ball last night. In one of the rare points where I could get into a rally, I really felt I couldn't do much but kind of block it back. He made no mistake with the short balls I served up.

Sup - was that the last clinic?

Hollywood -- mom with laptop was not hot. nice lady but older and i was more trying to help PPL because i didn't want him getting roped into fixing her laptop all night when he needed to run to see his folks.

Sup -- you missed a few more peeps. what is your critique of our ladies in residence Topaz y Skunk?

yah d3dan was getting lucky on a lot of serves... 2nd serves hitting the service line and such. but it must be very satisfying to SUP cuz the guy takes coaching very well and improves weekly.

Thursday Clinic

Again there is no clinic next Thursday. However the following week Thursday April 2nd will be your final week for the clinic.

I need to know if you want to continue. Temps are a bit brutal still and iffy at best. We you have your choice of 6 or 12 week sessions.

Please let me know by next Tuesday. Otherwise I will let the slot go.

Thanks
Sup

I was concentrating on the Thursday crew. I can do one for everyone, but that's up to those who request it. I have a captains log for everyone EXCEPT Vitaly cause we know he Dats play anymore on the board.

I will have to open my notes about Topaz and Skunk.

p.s. It's official. No press conference, no ESPN coverage, no graffiti on the bathroom wall... The club quietly bought Sup a Prince racquet. Should get here Monday.

"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned"

Skunk: When she showed up with JRS last year for pick up games at wakefield high school, I honestly thought she was a beginner. Her racquet was a beat up old hammer version, she was with JRS from work, and she dawned no apparent tennis brand on her at all. Goes to show you that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We played a set as a doubles team and I did not have to cover her side at all. Solid shots out front, fabulous footwork and more than anything a keen eye for playing the ball not the opponent. She has obvioulsy been taught by good pros and you can't deny that southern charm on court when she blasts a winner by you. If I had to poke at her game, I would def start with her volleys. She swings at volleys like TFM uses his wrist on groundstrokes. She could work on a bit more margin of error on a lot of shots and working the serve around wouldn't hurt. The fact that she barely plays and I can only come up with the above is a testimony to her tennis foundation. Then again I've seen her play maybe 3-4 times.

Topaz: It's not easy being green. Being the only regular girl in the TWMAC can't be easy. The verbal and mental abuse can play its toll on a person, especially one that sucks up emotions like a vacuum cleaner. She can practice a drill like a 4.0 but will enter a match like a 3.0 and on a golden day perform like a 3.5. What does that mean. If she can buckle down the "what happened and what if" mentality and exchange it with the "what needs to get done and how to do it" she could easily hang with any 3.5. She's put in the work, she has taken the abuse and like a timex watch.. she keeps on ticking. I would like to see her improve her speed, conquer her fear of the net, grasp the benefits of touch shots (lob, dropshots, slices), learn that hitting it back in the center is not plan A, and work on her mentality.

p.s. Sappy you want one?

Which Prince did you get?

I've been caught starring at Skunk's lower half plenty of times. Best mover and "shaker" in the TWMAC, but funny you mentioning best feet.

It's very easy to look at someone who is hustling and proclaim they are great movers. It takes a trained eye or some patience to realize its the guy who isn't sweating and getting every ball back who can really move with efficiency. Think Federer vs Nadal. Fed glides, while Nadal feet sound like Sappy running to a buffet. Both are good movers, but Fed wins out.

So I think ... my vote goes for 10 minutes of TFM , an hour or two of Auzzie, but the prize does go to Skunk. *Can't vote for myself*

i think i've diagnosed some of my problems:
KNEE PAIN
"Another possible complication of dehydration is joint pain. The cartilage in your body, including your joints, is composed mainly of water. As cartilage surfaces glide over one another, some exposed cells become worn and peel away. New cartilage is normally produced to replace the damaged cells. Due to the lack of blood vessels in cartilage, water is needed to transport the nutrients required for maintenance and repair. Dehydration may increase the abrasive damage and delay its repair, resulting in joint pain."
BACK PAIN
"It should be appreciated that the spinal joints--intervertebral joints and their disc structures--are dependent on different hydraulic properties of water stored in the disc core, as well as in the end plate cartilage covering the flat surfaces of the spinal vertebrae. In spinal vertebral joints, water is not only a lubricant for the contact surfaces, it is held in the disc core within the intervertebral space and supports the compression weight of the upper part of the body

Dude, that is very painful reading, especially for those of us who lack cartilage in some areas and whose cartilage in other areas is stricken with old person's disease, AKA arthritis. You better start drinking something other than hops-based liquids, or you'll end up like us. THE HORROR...THE HORROR...

Good call on Dayton; they looked Skunk-like fast tonight, didn't they? Or maybe the Mountaineers were just that slow. I already missed 2 today, twice as many as yesterday. I'm falling apart.

Sup, I'll take my diagnostics in private, please, just as I take my medicine. You can grade me when - if - we start the private reconstruction of my game, such as it is.

Thud! Missed 6 Friday games, including 2 from that overrated ACC thingie.

So I guess if Cleveland State (!!!) and Wisconsin played in the big, bad ACC, they would lose, like, every game but one, right? Hmmmmm.

My Tigers better be ready to play. 6-pack of your favorite beer, anyone, with cabbage on the side? :)

xisbum / hollywood -- there's no shame in losing to a team like memphis. they were made out to be and look like one of the elite 8 teams in the country. the shame is in losing by 20. lol. ughs. but the terps even making it to the big dance and winning a game is a minor victory in itself. don't know what happened to maryland's recruiting classes the last few years. they seem to have less talented players for gary to work with. memphis looked great today and uconn looked absolutely redonkulous.

can someone tell me where i can watch tennis online? i don't get tennis channel and i don't get fox sports and i don't get comcast sportsnet. ugh.

vitaly ... err DVI -- i picked up the 98 square inch versions. supposedly a good bit more pop than the 90's. my experience with yonex is limited to the rdx 500 lineup, rds001 lineup, rds003, rds002 tour and regular and a brief hit with your rqis tour 1 lights. we'll see how long these last. ;)

I'm just sacrificing 5 inches and a bit less pop (Insert TFM procedure joke).

Definitely liked it better than rds 001, rdx 500, rds 002 tour, rqis, etc. MP Tour 1 98 was 2nd favorite Yonex behind SRD Tour 90s. Hope they are in decent condition!

Sup, the Duralast wasn't as euphoric as I had hoped. Couldn't quite find the best range with the string. Sometimes I'd get the control I want, then other times I had some fly away shots on not so big swings. Probably shouldn't have used matchplay as my introduction to the string. Can you string the other frame with Big Ace or Blue Gear mains and PSGD @ 64 lbs please?

I don't think you will have any issue switching to the rebels. I think the frame is going to be more along the lines of a heavier kblade, or bigger ksix one 90. You were quite capable with both of those- still think you hit really well with the kblade :)

If you have not strung yet, I'd prefer blue gear in the mains this time around over big ace.
