What will happen when Nadal gets de-throned?

You have to face it, one day, Nadal will no longer be number one, and he will no longer win tournaments. It will happen, I guarantee it.

But what will happen after that?

Well, I can confidently say that we will have cleaner boards on TT and also better tennis to watch on TV.

It will be great.

I don't think he will get dethroned unless he retires

Most Nadal fans will enjoy the memories of his achievements, and the spectacular way in which he performed them. They will hope to see another star rise up who is as unorthodox, creative and original as he was. They will wait with expectancy for the emergence of another gladiator who enjoys the true meaning of competition. They will be thankful for the memories he gave them, and wish him well in his retirement.

Never heard that one before... Never heard that when Federer was #1.

Yes I do have a flash back........

2007 US Open Finals championship every single sports writer the next day...
"It is performances like these that show us that Federer is truly the best and will rule tennis for years to come. Next year he might truly break that curse he has on clay and beat Nadal.."

2008 US Open finals following day
"Fed is not dead contrary to popular belief. Yet this may very well be his last slam"

man how things changed lol.

THough I imagine Nadal has a few more years ahead of him.

Roger Federer will dethrone Rafa way before Rafa retires. It's only a matter of time. 2008 he was sick (mono), 2009 he's just rusty still, after a bit more play the old Roger (or close to it) will be back.

I am sure in 6 years or so he will be dethroned. It happens to everyone someday. Tennis will move on, and Nadal's career will still continue after losing #1 too.

just like fed.
i can really see how nadal would have competition against possibly federer, murray, gulbis etc but who knows if someone knocks down both federer and nadal the world will end haha

What will happen is this: French open is the first to go, in 2010. Then the signal will alert other players to take his titles one by one. Murray will be number one for some period of time in the same year. Nadal will face more injuries as he is now 24 and it takes him longer to heal, so the downfall in rankings will be somewhat swift. He will be remembered for the greatest clay court player and will return to capture the title in france, possibly2011. He will win title here and there but nver again the number 1 status. He will continue his streaky performances here and there till he hits 26 or 27, then noone will take him seriously any more. At this point he will retire.

The probable scenarios are either:he won`t win that many tourneys but he will still win be a threat just like Federer in the slams or he will face injury problems just like Hewitt and will struggle

Can't bear to even think back to those wilderness years before Nadal when I was bored with tennis being so predictable. When I think about WHAT that guy has brought to tennis - he deserves a medal just for that

You do realize that Nadal busted his knee in 07 USO and sacrificed the USO in 08 for the Olympics. So I hope you didn't take the sports writers comments too seriously in 07. You have to read between the lines sometimes and look at the context in which things are written. The inevitable was delayed a while with Fed cashing in on a few extra slams but Nadal was always going to overcome him once he got over the injuries.

Long after Nadal retires we'll still have all those dvd's of him spanking Fed in all those slam finals to remind us who the greatest of the era was.;-)

He's 22, not 24. He'll be 23 in early June.

Another bandwagon will be availible for a bunch of weirdos to jump on and then they will accuse nadal and federer of being in weak eras, making this new guy 100x better than both combined.

Read. I was talking about second half of 2010, when he hits 24.

The way it's worded... it's a bit nebulous, IMO.

That aside, he's injured much less frequently now than 3-4 years ago. It seems he and his camp have discovered a way to manage his play and schedule to reduce injury frequency and severity.

I see him going strong for at least 3-4 more years prior to heading down hill. That will put him at 27... and within the normal time frame of when the great players start falling behind the youngsters.

Of course, this assumes no other phenoms, like Nadal, coming along to knock him down even faster.

Nothing's normal about the way he plays. I hope you're right tho, but historically grinders have had shorter life expectancy. We all know it takes 2-3 more shots to take a point from him, he brings back balls many others give up on. This does not come free, and he's only human.

Historically the smartest players between the ears have a long life expectancy, so Nadal's high tennis IQ will put him at an advantage over his contemporaries here.

Secondly, even if he takes longer to end points, I don't think that's a problem.I think hes smart enough to balance his off court activities well enough and keep them very light so that the overall effect on his body is no more straining than the other top guys. For example he does things like golf, fishing, swimming etc off court which are not very straining and are a good balance for the body and the mind.

Thirdly, don't forget Nadal most enjoys the competition and the challenge , so he wouldn't freak out and panic one day if his ranking down. Its much much harder to lose motivation when just competing is such a high enjoyment factor. Nadal plays doubles a bit and doesn't win nearly as much but still just enjoys the challenge, so he already knows exactly what its like to not be the best.

It will be even more satisfying when hes lower ranked and not a favorite some day and end up winning a Grand Slam final. Nadal doesn't mind being the underdog so it won't faze him if hes not the king. It wouldn't surprise me if Nadal decided to become a Verdasco type player when he became older and didn't want to run so much. Now I think he gets a lot of pleasure in making the opponents suffer, testing the opponent physically, and also making them play his style of tennis.

I will rename myself GameNadal and haunt these boards forever, with no purpose other than to promote the Nadal generation of players at the expense of the current generation of players.

Fed dominated the tour for 4 and half years. Nadal might do the same or less.
One day it has to end. I don't know when, but I will be very happy then.

Not that I dislike Rafa, i like him as a person but I am on opposite camp.

Possibly the same thing that happens now with Federer - lots of bandwagon fans of the new top guy, lots of flames and bashing of Rafa, and not a huge amount of true Rafa fans left to defend him.

What will happen when Nadal is dethroned?

At that point he will have demonstrated that his style and attitude can be tremendously successful. As we are talking, there are hundreds of juniors busting their asses to try to capture his technique and attitude in the hope of emulating his success.

Bottom line: in a few years we will have more than enough Nadal clones swarming the top #10 so we won't miss the original. Won't that be a blast?

(Not that I think seriously that this is necessarily coming to pass, but if we are going to make predictions this is as good as any and it is going to be funny to watch the reactions of some posters here from both camps to this scenario.)

Knowing rafa behavior as we do... when he feels that he can't win anymore he just retires..
He will not struggle against the situation (like federer is doing)
He's a natural born winner.

I think the dominance may stop after his 25th birthday but will probably grab a French and maybe that year (2011). A slam or 2 per year after that for the next couple of years is likely and Nadal coud end up with a minimum of say 11-13 by then (2013) not including hard court slams. If he can win the U.S Open this year, he may reach it that tally by the end of 2012.

Just take a look at the boards now and replace the "Federer" with "Nadal" and "Nadal" with the guy who beats him. That's it :)

I can't wait for the days where Nadal receives the same criticism on the boards that Fed is receiving. The players change, the board NEVER changes.

Most players won't be tennis legends by the time they retire.
We have cleaner boards now than 2-3 years ago, except for some bitter anti Nadal fans like you and tennis-hero who start pointless threads like this.
