Will Nadal ever perform a clay season sweep?

He's come incredibly close. For the last four years he's won 2 of the 3 masters on clay and the only clay court major. This year again he came as close as he possibly could, but wasn't quite able to make it.

Do you think he ever will?

Personally, I think he needs to drop Barcelona if he ever wants to win all four big clay events in a single year. It's just too much to play 3 straight weeks. And it's not like he needs to play it. He's won it five times, for Christ's sake!

He should have dropped Barca.I mean he won that tourney but got 0 point.Playing 4 tourneys back to back is just too much.I truly hope that he and uncle Toni come up with a light schedule for next year.
As for the question:yes,if he drops Barca.

No. This year may have been his best chance and he failed to do so. Just too tough to do. If he does, and proves me wrong, it will make me quite happy.

He didnt loose to Fed twice becuase of Barcelona. He lost becuase of two reasons:
1)Fatigue from yesterday, which i underestimated
2)Classic Federer -- he shows vunerablitity in previous rounds... but in finals he takes it to another leve;

Not Important. Two Words: French Open!!!

I disagree. I think it is important. Especially in the Borg vs. Nadal debate. If Nadal could have a dominant clay season with no losses and victories in all of the four biggest clay tournaments, I think that would do wonders for his case. More than another French Open would.

I agree, Nadal needs to drop Barcelona.

The sweep would be possible, then. He's show he has what it takes to win all of the tournaments, but to do it all in a row he needs to get rid of 1.

It's obvious that is Barcelona.

i don't question the importance of monte carlo, rome . . . tourneys that have been around forever. but i think it's ridiculous to play every event (if you are someone like nadal who will get far every week). i don't think sweeping all of the european clay-court events is anything he needs to strive for.

his legacy is still in the works. his final win/loss record and the roland garros titles will be the ultimate litmus test.

I agree that it's definitely not necessary. With or without a clay season sweep he'll go down as one of the best clay-courters of all time (probably THE best).

But it would sure be fun to watch. :)

totally disagree. All nadal needs now are 3 more French opens, he can totally bag all masters and other barcelona type tournaments, but if he wins 3 more FO most will give Nadal the clay court king title.

He really should. I think it depends how he feels by Rome . As other posters have said, even way back then, he should drop Barcelona ( although its probably impossible for him now with the court named after him, along with defending points on it ).
I think this year could be the year. Theres no one really capable of challenging him, like previous years.

Didn't he already do this in 2010?

Yeah, except this time the question is can he do the complete sweep with the Barca title?

They should just rename the clay sweep as The Full Rafa Nadal, because at this point he's basically waxing the ATP / ITF of clay titles and prize money.
