Wilson Jack Kramer Autograph Midsize

Just got one off the big auction site for 20 bucks. For those aware that's an absoulte steal. I'm not one to really just hang it on the wall and look at so I cut out the old strings and restrung it at 42 pounds. I know you guys know more than me about this stuff especially Chicago Jack but I was curious what are the chances of it warping strung at that tension and what can I do to avoid it warping. Thanks.

At 42 lbs there's really not much of a chance unless you screw it up. I got one too for a steal, I think you'll like it; it's actually pretty stiff for a woodie; in fact I thought it was just a fair more flexible than the JK Staff.

A small aside here; when I broke it out during club, a kid came up to me and said, "nice ghetto racquet!"

I got some funny looks last night during league while playing with it. My oppnent asked if I was seriously going to play with it. After dispatching him 6-3 6-1 he didn't have much else to say. :D

That jk mid is definetely one of the best hitting woodies with the larger sweetspot and the extra graphite lamination for additional power. 42 lbs is a pretty low tension and a very good choice for restringing a wood racket several decades old. If it did not warp because of the restringing tension, then its probably going to be fine. Keep it out of extreme humidity and temperature conditions and you should have a great hitter. They really play awesome when strung with natural gut.

I don't know that a racquet will warp just from being strung (unless the stringing is very inconsistently done). I've purchased four used standard sized wood racquets off the big auction site and have strung them all up at 50 pounds using a lockout machine and have had no problems at all.

As what I have is totally new, I'm planing to let it go on my Thai webboard (yes, my own bi-lingual board) for about USD 100.

Well, I have one never strung, 4 others were strung, never played, but strings cut out long time ago ...

See if you can find an old racquet press. (Will it even fit on a mid-size?)

If it does, it will prevent warpage.

I've got about 50 wood frames. Of those, I've restrung 5 Vilas frames, a couple of Jack Kramers, two Vitas frames, and a pair of Fox ATPs all at 58 pounds with no problem.

Wood, was stonger than most folks are willing to give it credit for.

This is patently false. All of my wood frames are in a storage room in my garage and NONE are in presses. Presses went the way of the dodo some years ago.

I have one wood frame, my Adidas Haillet, which I purchased new in 1978 which is slightly warped. But I played with it for 5 years pretty much 7 days a week year round.

Just got one today 9/10 condition for $15. :)
How do they play compared to the standard (all wood) model? I´ve heard those midsizes are heavier.

they are too user friendly, imo. nowadays, whenever i play with a wood racquet, it would be 65 sq-in :)

No, no, no. This is the worst wooden racquet ever made. Aside from that they are extremely expensive. You can't even find them on the bay. Don't bother. Aside from that, these racquets have a funny smell.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

I just got one for casual play at the club (as a handicap against lower level players and friends). I guess it´ll be equivalent to a leaded up PS85.

I also got a Spalding Pancho Gonzales with the standard headsize. I´m considering getting a standard JK Autograph but I fear that these traditional non graphite-reinforced frames to be too fragile, specially when re-stringing.

What do you think?

The number one guy on our college team (D1, small college, early 80's) used those things to bash the living bejeezus out of groundies, with such gusto that I never really noticed whether he could volley with them! Elegant-looking frames, I always thought.

imo, ps85 is a lot easier to use than JK midsize. i don't lead up mine but i don't think leading it up would change its playing characteristics that much.

with the JK midsize, you would have to alter your playing style and play like how people would play with wood racquets. to me, it's easier to use than standard size wood racquets but that is kinda defeat the purpose because when you decide to use a wood racquet, most of the time, you are playing against someone who is not your equal so you would want a more demanding racquet (more so than JK midsize) :)

JK Prostaff to play with, although my Vilas is very nice with great plow, a little hefty though at 388g with overgrip!

i strung mine with prince synthetic gut duraflex at 45 lbs.

my favorite standard sized woodie is the donnay borg pro. i like it because borg used it and the paint job is nice looking :)

I started playing tennis with a standard Kramer Autograph, and never quite adjusted to any of the new frames. I purchased a Kramer midsize last year, but didn't like it at all. Now I'm thinking about getting an old Prince Woodie from ****. Does anyone know how these two rackets compare (the woodie and the midsize Kramer)?
