Lol me too. But I start the recovery week on wednesday. I haven't completed a full session of yoga yet. Its too long but hopefully I will be able to finish it at least once.

I was going to say that... the yoga gets easier the further you get into it, and after you have done the workout a few times it doesn't seem nearly as difficult or as long. Savasana is my favorite part of the workout. In fact sometimes I will do it on my couch... and then someone wakes me up.

Hey guys, just found this thread. Im a fellow P90Xer, currently in phase 3 of my second time through. Ive gotten tons of benefits from this program, and it really saved me from following the traditional "past my prime" path of many late twenty-somethings. I'll be 29 in a few months and right now Im stronger, quicker, and more flexible and agile than I was 10 years ago. You guys all keep pushing play and keep bringing it! If you guys have any questions let me know Im glad to help. I posted my pictures from my first round a few months ago, you can see them here:

so how is this going kenny? havent' seen you updating in a while, hope you haven't given up.

i just started 90x yesterday. i have been doing the regular power 90 for the month now and it gets boring real fast with only two real different videos. went from circuit 1-2 to 3-4 before they reccommended on the calendar. i can do almost everything but the ab workouts and i had trouble with ab ripper x too.

i have to skip plyos since i live on the 2nd floor in an apartment.

i hope you'll update soon!

Day 4 for me today. I have been liking it. The plyo was great but some of the high impact stuff is bad for my back. SO what I did was just hop on the elliptical for the time frame. The jump up knees to the hands one was prob the worst for my back. I will not be doing that exercise again. Yoga tonight... we will see. I def need help with my flexibility so I am getting excited to try it.

I am pretty soar. Must be working. I am just trying to get through the first 30 days and take it from there.

If you actually work hard at the videos... things get a lot better after the second week. You don't really get sore anymore and it becomes just work.

did you do the plyo immediately after waking up?

Yes I am and No it is at night. But I have 2 herniated, degenerative, bulging discs that when aggravated causes numbness and loss of strength in my lower legs. I know I prob should not be doing this, but I am stubborn and committed. (hopefully committed, we will see after a few weeks!) Surgery was recommended for me this summer. At 33 years old, I am not willing to do that yet. I still play tennis. I usually go quite a while without any major issues so... YOGA tonight!

woah dude

be sure to take it easy then, dont let your stubbornness lead you to getting injured worse

as for the Yoga, easy on the sun salutations, i imagine overstretching your back will not do you any good

Are you following the diet and everything in the program or just doing the workouts?

I'm planning on starting it come April.

I sadly had to give up for personal issues. I did not want to and i will be starting it again as soon as sectionals are over. Which is May 20th. I really wanted to keep going but like i said before, personal issues were holding me back.

Just finished up, around 11:15pm. Well that was def tough. A little slow for me, but something that I can see will help me. The first 40 minutes had me sweating! I really like the balance stuff, using those muscles to stabilize yourself is challenging.

I am not very flexible, so i can see this really helping me there. It was tough, challenging and relaxing. I am looking forward to next week's yoga. I would like to see myself get better at some of twisting stuff.

Not sure if this question was directed at me, but no I am not. I definitely have completely changed my diet, but not to the extreme of the program. Maybe if I get through this then maybe the second go around. I am really watching what I am eating, cutting back on carbs, hitting up protien, farting up a storm! I hope i am not the only one who has the problem. Drinking much more water. egg whites, .... etc. Still eat what my wife makes for dinner, just less of it. I am not willing to completely change my life or my families.

Have you guys all bought the stuff that is recommended in the guide?

I have three different resistance bands and the yoga mat. I'll probably get the push-up stands and a heart rate watch as well. I'm unsure about the pull-up-bar, the dumbbells and the yoga blocks though.

Could all the stuff be made with only the resistance bands?

Thanks!

unless you have some way of mimicking the pull up motion using the resitance bands (some kind of door hook, or ceiling hook w/e) you should get a pull up bar

if you have the resistance bands though, you dont need dumbells each exercise has some sort of variation using the bands

but i would get a pull up bar for sure

worst case you can use that as a "mount" for your bands

probably something interesting to try is doing the actual pull-ups and then using the resistance bands after you reach failure on those to crank out a few more reps(i never liked the chair option)

as for the yoga blocks, you might be able to find something around the house that you can use in the same way, but unless you're already flexible, a yoga block or suitable replacement is something i would recommend

for the record i hope you arent actually paying for the entire program

oh and as for supplements (not sure if you were asking about these), they're wholly unnecessary

want a decent recovery drink? drink whole milk and eat a good meal after your workout

need protein bars? im sure you can find plenty of cheaper alternatives

Gotta say after the first week, my favorites dvds are the chest and back and Kenpo!

wait till you do the Core synergistic in the recovery week, by far one of the best of the workouts

I really appreciate your detailed reply. I could use the balcony outside with the resistance bands for the pullups. I think I'm gonna try that, and if it isn't working, I'll buy the pullups-bar (my birthday is coming up, so it's won't be a big deal).

I'll also check out the yoga program once and then decide because I'm not sure how flexible I have to be. My flexibility isn't too badly, so I think that I might be able to the the stuff without the block. If you had said "You'll need it 100% for sure." I'd probably bought it, but in this case I'll go 'trial&error'. :)

And no, I'm not paying (yet). I was able to look into one episode earlier, so I have an alright idea what's going on in this program. (That was after I posted here. lol) The rest of the program will miraculously come to me as well. I also wasn't planning on using many supplements because I believe that if you eat healthy, which I do most of the time, it's totally fine. I will consume protein shakes from time to time (e.g. Powerbar Recovery Shake and the regular Protein Shake), but that's about it.

Thanks again!

I know that I have only done this for a week... I have been using the bands for the workouts. It has become a pain in the arse. It is hard to change out the bands quickly enough to get to the next exercise. Definitely possible to do all the exercises with the bands. I made a chin up bar that hangs from my ceiling joists out of black pipe.

I created an anchor high up on a lolly column using a carabiner and a muffler clamp. ( not sure what is called, but you screw it to make it tighter.) This I use to simulate doing the chin ups with. Until I get stronger and lose some weight and can use the bar more.

I did just order the bowflex dumbells. Free shipping and stand comes free also with free shippping. Special right now.

yea but dont those cost like $400?

for that amount of money you could put the p90x videos on an ipod, get a gym membership and do the workout at the gym and have money left over

Between working two full time jobs, raising 3 kids, taking care of the house ... some of us just do not have the time to go to the gym. I was not planning on spending the $400 but I feel that I will get more out of it with them. And if I am going to spend 10:30 pm to 11:30 pm in the basement instead of sleeping I want to get the most out of it.

What is a gym membership cost? About $40 a month? times that by 10 months and there is your $400. I will have these for a much longer time. The DVDs I got from a friend. Spent about $25 on pull up bar. I did not buy a yoga mat, push up handles, heart rate monitor or any supplements. I don't know... it is all the same. What ever works best for the person.

Back to disc 1 tonight. I have been looking forward to this one all week!

Actually these are some of the things I did buy... or make. I also made installed a chinup bar in the joists in my basement made out of black pipe. Imagine that...

I purchased a yoga block... and pushup bars... both of which I found at a Nike Outlet for $10 each. I also purchased a yoga mat which was not very expensive either. Dumbbells I had, but wished I had the Bowflex type so I could change them out quickly... I have multiple sets and make due. I have a range of 5 sets plus 2 where I use plates and create the weight I want.

But it is handy to use the right tools... bands would be good if you cannot lift your own body weight.

But I lift my glass to you for jumping on the program.

Almost bailed out on tonight, but I didn't. Life and stringing rackets is starting to catch up to me! I keep putting the rackets off, and now I am out of time. they have to get done. But after disc 3! I must admit I skipped the ab ripper tonight. I strung a racket instead. Yoga tomorrow.

Day 21 down. Def seeing decent gains. If you are on the fence about doing this. Give it a shot. I feel better about everything. A ton less tired, more energy, fitting into old clothes, etc... If you have the time, even if you don;t but can find the time, worth the effort.

Got to day 24, and then did something to my shoulder. Some sort of muscle pull or strain. So just doing some of the cardio and abs with minimal bicep and tricep, and no shoulder or chest. Gonna have to start over when pain is my shoulder goes away. Really sucks, I was on a roll.

I have read this thread and been on the P90X site and this program looks interesting, but I couldn't find an information: how much time a day does this program requires?

jefferson

Semi-Pro
The actual workouts take all of 1 hour and then the ab ripper x is another 17 min. But at least 1 hour. Goes by fast, once you get going. I have been kinda picking and choosing what dvds i can do, until my shoulder feels better, just so i dont fall too far behind. Go for it bro! Small investment for some sort of satisfaction!

Thanks for the answer. I have a pull up bar and planned to buy some resistance bands, and 1h-1h30 a day is not excessive... this is quite tempting, actually. I guess there are are some warming/stretching exercises counted in the one-hour session?

yeah definitely, there is a warm up and a cool down included in my time frame. I started with the bands, but decided on buying dumbells. I am sure the bands can do the job.

Same here! First day of p90x. A bit early to comment on the whole program, but as of now it seems to work: it burns. Especially the abs. And I thought I was fit... But it's good pain —as the crazy coach repeats every two exercises— and I'm glad to see that, although there is much room for improvement, I sustained the effort of the first session pretty well. That is, I did not collapse entirely half-way :D

I'm working with bands, and it's nice to see that the whole thing (warming up, workout, warming down + abs) does not take more than 1.30 hours.

All right, here we go—second day of peeninetyex. First, some contextual elements.

I'm 23, 1.90m (6.2 feet), 72kg (159 lbs)—rather lean. As I only play tennis casually for the moment (this is to change soon, hopefully) my physical condition is not something I stumble upon; yet though I can do a fair amount of push-ups, pull-ups and sustain a 25-minutes jogging, which was enough for me to think I was fit, I know that there is room for improvement. So I borrowed a friend's p90x DVDs and, seeing I could pass their 'fit test' (but not by a wide margin, far from it to be honest) I decided to give it a try.

My aims is not to gain some bulk, but to improve my strength and stamina. I won't be using supplements—just drinking milk after effort, no recovery drink. I have no money to spare in that anyway. I have a pull-up bar, but I am mainly using bands—I just find it easier to work with them.

The first day, chest& back, went rather well, I could feel my muscles burning but I did not fail until my goals were met, at the exception of one workout (diamond push-ups). Yet, after one hour and a half, a shower was most needed. Just one note: before you begin the program, be sure to review the DVDs and try the workouts that need dumbbells or bands, to know which weight you'll have to work with before you begin.

Today, plyometrics: I thought my legs were my Achille's heel, but I was mistaken: although my legs were soon aching as I expected, what I really struggled with was my breathing. Past 20 minutes (the full workout is 60 minutes) I was already drenched in sweat and breathing like Darth Vader. Several times I was about to give up but I held out, taking my time, concentrating on my breath and pausing one or two minutes (instead of 30 seconds) every two workouts to recover. Near the end, my whole body was sweating Niagara-like, but I was happy to see that I could do the whole thing with minor adjustments.

I'm not going to report how each day of the program went, but if some are interested I can keep you informed on how things are going.

I have been wondering about buying it to boost my game, but then I ran into the decision to pick between P90X, and Insanity. Has anyone tried this Insanity thing? It seems to me like P90X is more about putting muscle on rather than toning down? I was thinking about buying Insanity, and then buying P90X after I completed it to build some muscle in off season. Their are a lot of dedicated people on these forums :)!

Buying either program is a waste of money if you can avoid it, see if you can procure it through other means

i.e. borrowing from someone that has it or using other methods

P90x is hardly a muscle building program, it will however get you fit. Either p90x or insanity will contribute to a better degree of fitness and improve for tennis.

If you REALLY had to buy one, then i'd go for Insanity, similar results with no equipment, plus i think its cheaper anyway.

Not necessarily. It depends on the weights you use and the number of reps. Plus, aside from the main program, there is an alternative 'lean' program that you can follow if you don't want to gain bulk. Whatever you chose, you'll sweat a lot and burn fat.

Itagaki's advice is sound, also.

Can someone please explain to me in detail the difference between Insanity and P90X? I want to buy one or maybe lend it from someone. Would it be worth it to do Insanity in the morning, and P90X during the evening with a little tennis in the middle, or would this be to much?

PS: Thanks so much for responses! : )

Don't do both, you'll burn yourself and won't be able to progress. Both seem to be rather intense programs.

I can't tell you in detail the difference between both, except that one program lasts 90 days (divided in 3 phases) and the other 60, and that it seems that Insanity focuses more on using the weight of the body while P90X is more traditional and uses weights or bands (but there are also workouts focusing on plyometrics, balance and that stuff). Which does not mean that p90x is made only to increase muscle size—you can gain strength and stamina yet remain lean by adapting the workouts.

If you want to see what exercises of each program consist in, go to the beachbody site, there are videos presenting the programs so you can see if it's what you want to do.

Otherwise, third day of p90x for me today—shoulder, arms and abs: wow, it almost feels like vacation after yesterday's plyometrics. Pleasant workout, it's nice to feel your body pushed to its limits and go through the thing anyway. Tomorrow, yoga.

Since both seem to be efficient anyway, do the one you can lend from somebody (as suggested before), if you have a possibility.

No way should you be doing both full programs at the same time

browse the beachbody website though, they have p90x/insanity hybrid plans, but i would not recommend doing this until you've at least gone through a cycle of one or both programs.

As for difference, Insanity looks primarily like a super intense bodyweight workout, looks like it's primarily cardio though the intensity factor is way up there.

P90x seems sort of like crossfit for the home workout. Different workout every day(though not every week), focusses on more traditional weightlifting moves.

Also, i do not really know the exact cost of crossfit classes, but i would certainly recommend that over p90x as you do "real" lifts and you benefit from actual coaching.

TangentZ

P90X is focused on muscle building/toning and upper body. Insanity is focused on cardio and lower body (plyometrics).

People have tried replace P90X's Plyo X and Kenpo X with Insanity's (Max) Plyometrics and (Max) Cardio Circuit with good results.

Insanity's (Max) Plyometrics is at least 5x more intense than P90X's Plyo X. After doing Insanity, the cardio portion of P90X will feel like a walk in the park.

You would think P90x was gods gift to fitness. Imagine someone is making millions for telling people to get off their ass and also eat better. This world makes me sad. :(

You have to give Horton credit. He really did his homework. I get annoyed about p90x as much as any avid lifter but his p90x motivates more people than any other video workout I know of.

I dont really hate it or am I annoyed with it but it does make me laugh that people are praising it so hard. Its like no one ever told them to eat good foods and move before.

There are many better ways to exercise for athletic gains but if it gets people up off there fat ass then I am ok with. Better they do this then Cross fit.
