Murray-Soderling in same quarter

Nadal caught a break on that one.

Murray's gone out in the fourth round more than any other round at grand slams so far in his career. Soderling has has won 2 out of 7 matches in his career at the AO. Therefore, i think this quarter final match up may not even happen. A Tsonga - Baghdatis quarter final may be just as likely.

Anyhow, if it is Murray v Soderling, Murray has to be the slight favourite, given his past record at the AO. But it could be a tough one to call, as Soderling would probably be in good form by that point, so who knows.

I'd definitely pick Murray over best of five sets on a court that isn't remarkably fast (though, as we've seen, slower helps Sods because he has more time to set up those big swings even if it means his opponents can get more balls back).

Not that Soderling can't beat Murray, I just think Murray is too consistent over a long match. The key, IMO, would be for Soderling to win the first set. I don't see him coming back on Murray, but, again, it's certainly possible, I just don't expect it to happen.

This is the key really. If Soda makes it to the quarters, particularly in good form, he could take out Murray. Or at least make for a good encounter.

They're gonna kill each other and then Nadal will take the prize and win the semies easily in straights.

I agree. But I still think he'll have a hard time with J. Melzer.

Murray has lost unexpectedly early in a few slams (2009 AO, 2009 USO, 2010 USO), so don't jump to conclusions. There's a lot of tennis to be played.

I hope Murray goes all the way!!!!

Murray sometimes makes weak players look like they are playing the match of their life. He then gets beaten in 4 o5 sets.

Soderling can be attacking crazy form like FO 2009 4th Round, FO 2010 Quarters, and play weak with many unforced errors in the same tournament! Not the french open as of uet but other tournaments he seems to hit high winner to UE ratios then next match he is utter crap.

If the match does happen....I want to see a hungry Murray for his slam, and A Sod who is determined to show to Murray who the real number 4 is!

Soderling has only lost to Federer and Nadal in slams since he became a top player (excluding last years loss to Granollers lol), so if he makes it to the QF then he will probably be in really good form. Murray of course is capable of beating him but it will be a tough ask, especially in an area of the draw where he has traditionally struggled (and Soderling has excelled). Should be a good one.

I think Murray is looking VERY GOOD. He's stronger physically than he's ever been. After having early exits in the past few hardcourt slams, the percentages are with him. His second serve has improved. His draw is not prohibitively hard; and he's got the experience of being in slam final last year over here. Plus, this surface suits his game best i.e in addition to being a hardcourt the surface is slow enough for Murray to get everything back.

Soderling is not such a big threat as we've seen Murray crushing him before and even in the WTF. Plus Murray's good against tall power players.

Finally, everyone's talking about a potential grandslam for Nadal and the fact that Fed is looking so good to defend his title. There's ZERO pressure on Murray and he's flying cleverly under the radar.

I won't be surprised if he actually wins the AO.
