Top heavy vs deep teams

What are some that are the best examples of that in each category in the nation? What would you rather your team be?

top heavy:
Michigan
Florida State
Wisconsin(more so last year)
Texas Tech
Kentucky

deep:
UCLA
Texas
Ohio State
Notre Dame
Mississippi State

others?

i would say ohio st should be considered more top heavy because of their outstanding 1,2 in blaz rola and chase buchanan

You've also got an elite category that would be considered both top heavy and deep and those teams not coincidentally are Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio State, the teams ranked 1,3,4 right now. I don't know what to call USC this year because they are both deep and top heavy, but didn't perform well at Indoors due to injuries and maybe just cause its indoor courts.

the three teams i said, virginia, tenneseee, and OSU all have at least 4 ranked guys, if not more. all three teams have a good 1+2 combo as well.

It's an interesting topic, if you can win most of your 4, 5 and 6 matches then pick up the doubles or the top 3 singles you would be very strong and race up the rankings.

The most extreme example was Wisonsin of last year. Bauman and Michalika were a ferocious top 2 but 3-6 was weak. Big dropoff, but because their top 2 was strong they were able to be competitive with teams like Ohio State

When a top-heavy team plays a deep team without a stud or two at the top, two things become very important:

1) The doubles point...lineup is a huge decision for both coaches

2) If the deep team wins the doubles point 4, 5, & 6 have to perform at their highest level.

How good is Clemson?

Was this a serious question or was it a snide way to say "Why are you talking because your team is bad?

If it was serious; Clemson is more of a deep team. Our top is very weak for an ACC school. If we are too pull any upsets this year(our closest was losing 4-3 to VT last year), it is our bottom that has to respond well.

I'm a Clemson alumnus which is why I asked.

Minnesota

Minnesota may be the best example of a team being good exclusively due to depth. They are now ranked 16th and do not have a player ranked in the top 125.

They are virtually undefeated in the 3-6 spots so far this year.
