Are there any high level players that play with a full syn or multi? When i say high level, i mean 4.0 and above or a college player.

Plenty of 4.0-5.0s in adult leagues. A couple of the guys on my college team string full syn gut (makes my life as a stringer a lot tougher than it needs to be IMO... ).

Juniors don't have NTRP ratings, nor should they. In my area, they are a rarity these days, most use a hybrid, the more serious ones tend to do a full poly job.

oh i didnt know that jrs dont have ntrp ranks. I have tried many hybrid and hybriding does work for me. I like the same string in a full bed. i was wondering why the high level college players i saw were playing with a full syn. they can get any string they want for free

Jurgen Melzer used Isospeed nylon in the 70 lb range at RG '09, lost in 3rd round.

But yea, a lot of 4.5 guys in my league use syn gut, because it's what they've been using for decades. They don't pour over their gear like us on tt, they are typically the ones still with their trusted eastern or continental strokes.

What? They don't get obsessive about 1 pound of tension loss or an extra gram of weight on the hoop? Who are these people? :)

 What's easier to string than a full bed of syn gut?

I used to play exclusively with PSGS... I really miss that string...

It lasts a lot longer, making my life easier. The difference for full syn gut and a hybrid for me is the difference between a 15 min string job and an 18 min string job. In other words, the less total times I string a racquet, the more time overall I save, lol.

Exactly. Stringing is stringing to me (unless it's full Lux, which is where I begin to cry).

lol. i have only done that one...alu rough..not a fan.

anyways. most people here use full synthetic gut. including both of my coaches and a college coach/ former teaching pro who moved here.

I've only done full Lux once. Never again...

One of the guys on my team has full ALU Rough at 61 lbs. Thankfully, he doesn't really notice when it goes dead, so he waits 'til it breaks. But when it does break, I'm not in a good mood...

Haha. Well put.

Ty, dread NG/Alu hybrid. Crossing butter and barbed wire. Btw, strung a 4.5/5.0 player's racquet who did not care about the string, just that it was taut, 64-65# in a 95" head.

full syn gut is great. You can have 2 racquets and get away with it. My main stick gets the full poly treatment, and my backup gets the Wilson Stamina. Makes it a lot easier because I just restring the poly racquet every few weeks and use the Syn Gut racuqet as a backup.

The worst was when I tried mantis comfort syn mains and alu rough crosses. I broke it twice on the stringer before I gave up.

The first and last time I string Luxilon Alu Power. I hate the pain and additional time it takes to weave the crosses on this string, so stiff and not good for you hands. I don't mind stringing up co poly which are a bit softer.

I think most people just play with whatever is cheapest. To them, a string is a just a string. To us, strings are fun to experiement with and any slight improvement is considered wonderful :).

Oh, but he's retired and played with a small-headed racket, so nowadays most all 4.0's would beat him.

Uh huh.

Jim Courier currently uses a hybrid. I'm not sure what strings he uses specifically, but in a post-match interview (played Borg - Champions Tour) he commented on his strings and how he's made the move to using a more contemporary setup with polys in the main and a synthetic in the cross.

So that means now he can beat 4.0's!!!!!!

Wrong! He uses Synthetic mains (Gosen JC) and Luxilon ALu crosses.

For what is worth i use full Mantis Comfort Synthetic and i've never been so happy.

I stand corrected, then. I knew he no longer used a full bed of synthetic, however, I was obviously incorrect in the arrangement of his hybrid.

As for Mantis Comfort Synthetic, I love it as well, and often use it as a cross in my setup.

Why would Jim Courier be playing with a string from Gosen? Wouldnt he be sponsored by some big name company?

to get back to the original topic. If anyone has seen the tennis documentary a lot of the players were using a full syn

Big name company....like Wilson ??
Gosen as far as I'm aware at least make their own strings (unlike Wilson).

P.S. The highest ranked male players (I know of) that played full synthetic at least at some point were indeed Jim Courier and Novak Djokovic.
Both are now into poly hybrids...with poly in the crosses.

Head Perfect Control, all the trouble of RIP Control with a softer outer coating. A pair of m 5.0 players use this in 18x20 95 inch heads, no joy whatsoever.

Peya uses a full bed of iso speed.

Lipsky uses alu power in mains, and nxt tour 16 in crosses.

To me it depends on the racquet. Lux and other polys are easy in open pattern 100" racquets. The worst I have had to string was Pro Hurricane in Prestiges with cap grommets. Three of those in a row. If another came in I would have thrown a fit.

Agreed. That is the hardest multi to string up. It still was nowhere near as bad as Lux BBO.

actually, BBO is not that bad. It slides fairly easily making it easy to weave. Babolat Revenge is horrible, because it sticks. Also, Poly Star Energy is a mother to string because it is very slippery, especially in a 18X20 pattern. Try those two in a box pattern, and you will be cursing life.

Not to sound like a wimp but ever use gloves or something on your fingertips when weaving? Alu Rough tends to slip when I weave. Polystar still have that coating?
