What's happening to Ernests Gulbis?

Hi everybody,
will Ernests Gulbis' crisis ever end? It's been three months since he last won two matches in a row... I read that he was training with Sargis Sargsian in Monte Carlo. Has he split with his coach Hernan Gumy? DO you have any news? Why is he struggling so much this year in your opinion?

Unless he rids himself of that horrible attitude, he is going nowhere. The game is right there, but completely losing it over a single call in the middle of a game at the end of a set?? He is a bigger joke than he would be if he were utterly talentless and a barely-top 200 player.

Flashes of brilliance however if one point rubs him the wrong way then he loses control of his emotions and cannot recover.

He should just work for his father and forget tennis.

That's an insult to Safin. Sure, he may be an underachiever, but he still achieved a lot, way more than Gulbis.

If at this point Gulbis has a Safin-like career, I'd actually be very impressed and consider it a job well done.

What is happening to Ernests Gulbis? Nothing is "happening" to Gulbis--he's just being typical Gulbis.

Consistency has never been his strong point. If he's struggling now, then he's been struggling his whole career.

It was sad to see how disappointed he became after a stupid call in the first set against Roanic. He is supposed to be a proffesional who lets those type of points go. He went wellllll over board with holding a grudge against the umpire.

I am a Gulbis fan and I enjoy watching him win or lose...I just wish he was "winning" a little more.

What crisis exactly are you talking about? Excepting the odd tournament here and there, Ernests wins perhaps one or two matches and that's it. So this is par for the course. You talk of crisis when someone is consistently good and goes into a slump.

Just underachieving as usual. Time has come to do the personal inventory if you're serious about a pro tennis career. All that talent cannot make up for the lack of emotional development evident in your on- and off-court behavior. Man up or RETIRE!

I don't know, I just don't see it. I have watched Gulbis a few times, and I don't see the flashes of brilliance any more than I see flashes of brilliance in all Top 50 players. I don't see the ability, like a Safin, to simply outplay anybody on any given day.

This is NOT to say Gulbis is an underachiever, he likely is, but I don't see a #1 talent as many think.

Too much money in his family, and he is just not working hard. He may have the attitude of "I want to see how far my talent with minimal work can go." History has shown, not to the top. It is guaranteed. Don't waste your ****ing time.

Why do you think he is wasting time. If he is financially settled, have fun on the tour and with minimal work he can be top 50 player than all the power to him. Why does he have to be on the very top?

When you're a fan of the game, any game, heroes not hedonists are sought after and cheered for. The guys I know love the grinder who gets the most out of honest effort and dislike the glider who uses only a fraction of their potential. In any and every sport.

He's a cool guy who has nothing to worry about in life. It's amazing he had enough dedication to become a professional tennis player. Look at all the other billionaire's kids who do nothing their entire lives because they don't have to.

I don't see why everyone is saying "its because he has a billionaire dad and doesn't care about tennis." Have you even watched him play? Does it look like he doesn't care about winning? If he didn't care, he wouldn't be getting so mad at himself/umpires/line calls

I wouldn't comment on Gulbis if I didn't know of him by viewing many of his matches. In fact, I used to scan the order of play and try to watch him, especially after promising results at the USO ('08?). Last winter/spring really got my antennae raised as I thought he was ready to take the next step. Now all this GARBAGE! That's why I suggest taking a personal inventory and making appropriate decisions. He's a top 20, maybe top 10, guy if he just busts his gut. If he cares, he learns to channel the passion not let it explode randomly at the nearest target.

I agree, but that doesn't mean he is wasting his time. It means he isn't the kind of player you want to cheer for -- so don't, and meanwhile Gulbis isn't wasting his time by continuing to play if he's content just to be a Top 30 player.

He is wasting his time if he thinks pure talent (or whatever you define it as) will get him to the top 5 or to Major titles. Maybe 15 years ago, but not now. If he wants a major, he better plan on working hard over 4-5 years. Like Murray, Nadal and Djokovic are doing. In 1996-1998/ 2001-2003 he probably could have snatched a major but not anymore. You have to be willing to work from the baseline.

You pulled a quote from my post but I never wrote in any of my posts that Gulbis is wasting his time. I admonished him for his cavalier approach to the game and suggested a personal inventory would be a wise next step or perhaps, retirement was an option. The time he is wasting is the fans' time. Would you have been happy to show up for your seat at IW and watch him make 30 UEs and 1 winner? I'd demand $$ back. That's not ATP tennis, it's GARBAGE. Let someone who's willing to try take that draw spot.

Wealthy family.... doesn't need the grind. A very talented player and a nice guy though. I met him in L.A. a few year back.

The time he is wasting is the fans' time. Would you have been happy to show up for your seat at IW and watch him make 30 UEs and 1 winner? I'd demand $$ back. That's not ATP tennis, it's GARBAGE. Let someone who's willing to try take that draw spot.

If you pay to watch Gulbis, you should know what you are paying for going in. Ditto for the other players. Plus there's the matter of trying to define when a player is really trying vs. having an off day/injured/tired/whatever.

Some players just try harder/prepare better than others. The draws after all, are made on ranking(which comes from achievement) not based on projected 'willingness to try'.
