What in your opinion is the most devastating shot of all time.
In order to qualify, the player who owned that shot must have been a Grandslam champion.

tried to add more choices but something got messed up. My apologies. anyone know how to change this poll now?

Federers forehand. Forehands trump serves anytime simply because they are involved twice as much.

Where is Ivo Karlović's serve? Thats the most devastating shot ever. That shot alone takes sets off Federer and Nadal. That shot alone wins matches for Ivo...

I'm thinking about the mental damage a shot does, and I would have to say the Sampras serve. It rubbed out more slam hopes than any single shot.

Djokovic's backhand isn't close to being the best shot ever. Its not even the best shot in todays game, Nadal and Federer's forehand are better aswell as Roddick's serve.

actually Ivo's serve has beaten federer.

I agree, that's the most devastating shot in tennis.

But Gorans Serve won Wimbledon and got him to the finals on three other occasions. Andtwo of those he lost to Sampras and Aggasi in 5 sets.

The King's backhand is the best shot ever. Look how he closed down the set against Puperer in style.

or when he broke Murray

He can also produce some great running forehands just like his idol Sampras.

To posters who picked Ivo Karlovic's serve:

Ivo isnt a Grandslam champion (yet). in my book, if a shot hasnt helped a player win a slam, it isnt devastating enough.

True comment. But in Ivo´s case I don´t think so. His serve is truly devastating, but he has NO groundstrokes at all. LOL

Are there any players solely known for their backhand and won a slam?

Marat ,Djokovic , Hewitt come close but i was looking for a stand out backhand on their game. Eg: Roddick --his serve stands out.

Marat could have won a slam even with out his backhand.Djokovic has way too much arsenal.

Perhaps Gauston Gaudio?

Nadal's feet?

Djoker's feet?

Those are just funny thoughst but overall it's Pete's serve, it brought consistent doom like nothing else espc in the clutch (not so for Roddick esp wimby 2009).

Voted for Sampras.

When he was on, Goran's first serve was way crazier. But overall, day to day, and between 1st and 2nd, Sampras' serve was a bigger weapon.

Lube's serve, when on, back in the day, was up there, too.

I don't think any baseliner can win a slam without a decent forehand. Gaudio's backhand is good, but his forehand is still a very reliable shot.

The Gonzalez forehand. It is simply the most devastating shot ever because of the sheer pace and the amount of effort gonzalez puts into it. Gonzalez has brought pace to an extreme level.

Watch from 4:40 on, nobody has ever played with the ferociousness and intensity of gonzalez. Its just such an ispirational style of play.

By devastating, are we saying most effective, most explosive, most unique, most memorable or most overpowering? Of the choices, I immediately narrowed it down to Agassi's Return of Serve, the Sampras Serve and the Goran Serve. I have watched tennis obsessively since the late 80s and have watched clips and matches of just about all of the greatest players going back to the early 60s. Sampras and Ivanisevic had serves that no one could handle. But there are other players who have tremendous serves. Karlovic, Roddick, Krajicek, Isner, Phillipoussis etc. Of the serves, i would say Sampras was most effective, because of his disguise, control and variety. Ivanisevic had a lights out first serve. Basically unreturnable, if it was in.

I am trying to be as honest as I can about this question. Using the criteria of the shot(game style etc.) being effective, explosive, unique, memorable, overpowering and (as the thread states) Devastating, I would say that Agassi's return easily beats them all. I've seen big serves. I've seen (overall) better service return games than Agassi. I've seen more explosive groundstrokes, better touch, better ball control, better strategy and just plain better overall tennis talent than Agassi.

However, I have NEVER seen anyone return a 145 to 150 mph serve at the shoelaces of a massive server, except for Agassi. I have seen him do it to Taylor Dent, Roddick and Karlovic. Yes, Federer can return a serve with that pace. But not with the kind of velocity that Agassi did. Look, its really more of a parlor trick. I think Hewitt, Connors and probably Federer had better(or more consistent) overall service return games, but the ability to take the hardest serve in the world, on the rise and put it back over the net for a clean winner or at the feet of the server (who has not even finished his follow through on the service motion), is the most devastating shot I have ever seen in tennis. I remember seeing Taylor Dent's expression after Agassi cleaned up his biggest serve of the day. He really looked like he had seen a ghost. Imagine being able to serve 140+ mph from age 16 up. You are finally on the tour and a 30 something Agassi returns your biggest serve for a clean winner. If no one had ever done that before, I guess it would be very hard to believe it. Or accept it.

I would say Sampras' second serve. Of course not as strong a shot as a first serve, but mentally devastating to an opponent. Usually, they feel like they have a good chance to win a point when someone misses their first serve. When Sampras would crank up a second serve and put the point away, it could just break people.

has got to be pete sampras' serve because with federer's or lendl's forehand, they have to set up the shot to hit the winner. with pete sampras' serve, it just would just take 1 swing and the point was his. it's very demoralizing if you were sampras' opponent.

Sampras could only serve half the match though. He wasn't even able to use his most devastating shot half the time. Federer's forehand is (well...was) always available.

well, not true if federer plays nadal because nadal would hit the ball to his backhand pretty much all the time :)

Goran or Ivo's are the only serves that belong in discussion for most dominant. Goran's serve was frightening, especially on grass. Sampras' serve was a beast and was uber reliable, but it was returnable to get it in play. Goran's serve was not touchable when in form and it was like watching someone on a string play against him. Some of those wimbledon run's from the early 1990's was jaw dropping. It was ace, winner, ace, winner (repeat).....

Ivo has perhaps taken it up a notch (I think) on all surfaces due to the really awkward angles vertical angles and wicked kick he can dial on. He serves through people in many instances where Goran would paint the corners
