What do you bab experts make of the aerostorm tour? I had to give the apd and pdr back today...still kind of on the fence...looking for that elusive blend of tour 90 and extreme...

Definitely not a Bab expert, but I did have two demo sessions with the AST long ago because I really dug it. Unfortunately near the end of that second week I realized something that killed the frame for me: the upper third of the hoop felt very dead to me and the ball died more than I wanted. Didn't feel it so much on groundies, where I thought the AST excelled on both wings, but on serves I often find that I miss the sweet spot north way more than south, and when I missed North on the AST the ball would just die into the net. I think the thicker beam of the AeroPro series frames may help in this regard, making the upper part of the hoop a bit more poppy, because I don't remember having that same issue with the APD.

I had about a year of experience with the AST. If it weren't for the stiffness and larger headsize, I might think of looking at it again.

But honestly, I think that the PST is the better frame to go with. It swings easier and you get better results with let work.

I am but a man, of flesh and of blood, and I am weak!

Gave in to the R-holism today, you could say I full on relapsed. I'm not proud of it

Long story short, it was a cold and wet day, the clay was playing like mud and the balls felt heavy and slow.

I wasn't getting good penetration with the PPro and the slower conditions were forcing me to go for too much and to miss.

So, on a changeover, I innocently picked up my old n6.1 95, the one I kept and didn't sell........... Boom, it was effortless power, efortless plow, effortless control. I was suddenly hitting right through a dogged opponent who, on a normal day, gets everything back, but on this slow, wet court, was getting to everything with enough time to turn the tide and dictate.

The old 6.1 felt magical, like a trusted friend that would never let you down. It felt like it had my back, no matter what, like I could just swat at the ball like a bothersome fly and the 6.1 would just effortlessly and utterly destroy it.

Anyway, I was going to restring the 6.1 tonight, with some fresh B5E, and then take it out again tomorrow. Then I stopped and decided not to.

The conditions absolutely favored the 6.1. Having all the time in the world meant never being rushed. Also, I felt like Sod out there, the slow conditions meant I could just load up and fire at will.

I know that in faster conditions or on a hardcourt, where the PPro has been shining lately, I'd start feeling rushed with the 6.1, especially on my backhand........or not, who knows, in fact, I don't even remember why I stopped playing with the 6.1's.

Either way, I'm still hell bent on trying to add more plow to the PPro. My conditioning has improved tremendously over the past 3 months, and I can easily add more weight without sacrificing RHS.

I'm just waiting on my second PPro to come in, should be soon now that the postal strike is over. Once my second stick comes in I'll start experimenting. Only way to know if a mod works is to go head to head with the stock, unmodified PPro.

Well, I guess once a R-holic, always a R-holic.

Good night lads

Dear Diary,

Oh brother...

STILL finding my PPs a tad weighty and/or slow on the back-foot - and this is after I've removed the lead @ 12. Off the front-foot I was still getting the control, the thumping ball, the feel and touch, and that lush slightly PT630-ish mega-solidness that makes this frame stand out. However, I'm finding it generally slightly a struggle to get anything 'extra' out of the frame, ie, to use that well worn and often quoted phrase beloved of every decent rackaholic here on TT - it's a bit demanding.

Also, to add to the confusion, in my racketaholic way, I pulled out a particular, let's call it a somewhat familiar frame to me from my, ahem, "Ross K Racketaholic 12-frame Combi bag.":) Having lost the 1st 6-3, I proceeded to win the 2nd 6-1 and displayed the kind of improvement in fluency and rythym that does make me question what I'm doing with these Pres Pros. Moreover, I was suddenly experiencing a frame that is not just solid as hell but maneuverable and quicker than quick when on the back-foot, on adjustment shots, wrist-flick-type situations. Now, this frame generally doesn't quite find the b-line with the same natural booming depth as an APD or an Extreme Pro or whatever. However, with time to adapt, I reckon that would come.

Is it all about the head-light balance, I'm wondering? Am I simply better off with a bit more of a head-light balance?

Anyhow, not going to give up on the Prestiges yet... I still have to look at the TGKPP with new caps/string job - and this racket does EVERYTHING ever so slightly nicer than the retail YTPP I played yesterday IMO.

"SHAKES HEAD, LIGHTS CIGARETTE, REACHES FOR THE TUMBLER OF WHISKEY, PULLS DOWN THE PIPE"...

Wonderful to see Tsonga yesterday btw.

I've always liked the guy and his game. As a Brit I'm for Murray, but I'd also love it if Jo-Wilfreid could somehow do the impossible and achieve what would be the biggest surprise - and most welcomed, I suspect, in years - if he could actually win the trophy. No doubt about it though, Jo has a bit of charisma and whatever, and that's great for the game.

Okay, not in his general GOATL (legend) strasosphere, but just a tiny bit like...

And Tsonga ruined my day.

But I gotta give the man props and root for him from here on. Classy, fun guy. Would be a stellar surprise, though I'd give him a very slim chance.

Ross, does your country REALLY believe in the Scot this time, or are expectations tempered at all from past let downs? Man I'd love to be in London right about now. Good times.

JG,

The British public doesn't really believe in Muzza, no.

One major factor here, as well as the obvious brilliance of Fed, Rafa, Novak, etc, is the slightly paradoxical thing of all the unbelievable pressure heaped on him due to the decades of tennis under-achievement in the UK pro-game. It's like we are all desperate for him to win... he has to win... but we'll sure be quick to ridicule and lambast him the second his form slips a bit.

I believe there's something fairly interesting in that in terms of what it says about present-day British culture, it's confidence (and lack of therein), etc.

I have not tried it, but I am in no shape to demo sticks unfortunately. All I know is people love the heck out of this stick. Many claim it to be a much better tweener than any babolat creation. I know I love the feel of Dunlops - very Wilsonesque.

The Tfight is one of the best ever in this category. A classic player's tweener. I just don't need that much spin for my game, but you would enjoy both sticks in a shootout I am sure.

If it makes you feel any better, I met a guy with a massive collection of them. He tried my Platinum out, and said it was one of the few racquets he would switch to from the N95. Dude had great strokes and hit very clean. He thought the Donnay had a little more flex in it, and that was the only real difference he could come up with.

Yeah it is a PITA and only worth it if you have been using those same frames for years and don't want to change.

People romanticize old frames so much, but the new ones being made make tennis a lot easier.

That's why I decided not to string it up fresh and to just put it away. It's such a tempting beast.

Now, if my experiments with the PPro don't pan out, I might just dust it off and start using it again, at leas for slow clay days.

The N95 isn't that old. It's actually the easiest 6.1 to play with. It's hefty for sure, but it's got a much lower SW than the K's, or even the Classic. Haven't tried the BLX, but those also have a SW of 340, which is a real turn off.

Agree about the romanticizing though. For example, I enjoy playing with a PS 85, and might get one just for the collection, but I'm in no way under the impression that it plays better than my modern frames.

It actually makes the game harder. Sure, it feels great when you hit the SS, but that SS is one elusive sonofa***** :)

Yeah, I was going off topic a little there. The N95 is definitely not that old, but it just made me think about how people can get about classic sticks..like the PS85..perfect example.

I actually hit with a guy who uses the stars and stripes version..great player, but I can hit through him with newer sticks..even the youtek prestige mid is packing more heat than the older version.

Yes, that was my mistake I think. As I've lately become a stringaholic too, I have a load of strings laying around doing nothing, so on a whim or something, I had an n95 strung with Tour Bite @ 52 lbs. Have to say it more than confirmed my suspicions that the frame would play outstanding with a number of the newer polys. Anyhow, I want to keep a lid on things because, well, it's not as if it's a perfect frame or anything.

It's pretty tank-like, a bit abrasive really (like all those 6.1s I've played with), it's too head-light for me, it's got a slightly smaller head-size than I'd prefer (with a 98"-100" h/size I'd be all over it.) But it's very solid. Very maneuverable for me in that it gets to the ball very quickly indeed (and I find this especially so on the back-foot.) It hit a big, spinny ball (open pattern, I'm referring to btw.) You can really just stroke it around with great fluency, or bash and boom it in (and we all know the frame has a secret sort of power reserve, or zippiness, that I always used to call 'bullying power' or the 'x-factor'.) It serves pretty huge and with good action too. And as you might expect from that balance, it's generally pretty handy going all court... bottom line for me yesterday was it got me hitting, flowing, moving my feet, finding form and playing with a bit of confidence for a change.

It does a bit. The N95 was just a great racquet. I wouldn't switch because I'm officially done tracking down old player frames.
Good job I still have 3 of them then.:)

K, Ross, now it's my turn to be a di@k: The n6.1 is actually slightly larger than the PPro.

That's right, the Prestige MP mold is actually closer to 94 si, not 98, whereas the 6.1 is a true 95 si.

Anyway, you probably knew that, so I'll stop now. :)

Q. to you, other lovers of N95 other 6.1 versions:

Are you mainly b-line-type player?

I ask as, what with it's head-light balance and all, this frame is regarded I think as a bit more of an all courter's frame (which I'm not really.) Just purely off the b-line from back court though, taking all the net game etc away for a second, do you all think this rack can absolutely still hang and b-line bash with authority and just in this regard?

Just curious.

That was part of the n6.1 x-factor. Pretty effortless baseline bashing but so easy to handle if you needed to come in. My perfect setup on that frame was the DelPo setup. : 6.5in. of lead at 3 and 9. Just made it a baseline machine. And even with the added weight it never felt sluggish or laborious to play with.

A week in the life of a racketaholic...

Well, after a week which has seen me get a bit disheartened with my PPs; rediscover the brilliance of the N95; and ("news just in"...), I've also hit with 2 frames with the 100" head-size I think I might actually fare best with - the Extreme Pro and the 03 Tour (both old versions of these respective lines), I have to say, my intuition is telling me this...

100" h/size... a bit of a softer flex than I've been used to late (early 60s approx)... lighter and less hefty... baseliner frame... quick-swinging... very spinny... some control... some feel and touch... some solidness... this is where I'm heading.

Next week, and keeping in mind I still want to restring and recap my TGK, I intend to look closer at this 03 Tour racket, and I feel my APD's calling! Re the latter, what can I say? I know, I've been on and off using this frame for a year and I still can't quite ascertain whether it's for me. For sure though, it's still in the mix. Re the 03 Tour, well, I'm a little surprised and initially very impressed... coming to it never having played this line (03 Tour, Hybrid Tour, Ozone Tour, etc), or knowing next to nothing about them, I find these 03's hit HUGE SPIN and absolutely rock and roll from the baseline where I was effortlessly pinging it with a lot of extra juice from corner to corner yesterday. I'll also add that... yes, interesting and pleasing beam it's got there... hmm.

Right. Now I'm curious about these frames/this line... time to dig up some old posts and find out a bit about how they differ, which are the most highly regarded, old reviews, etc... wow, Prince?... I never knew.

PP,

That 7G will be a great, great frame to court for an extended period. I sometimes wonder if its lone fault with me - that extra length sometimes jamming me on the forehand side - would have dissipated with more than a demo week to adjust to it. The serves and backhands were positively golden. I remember REALLY loving those flat heaters to the different corners of the service box with such ease. Don't recall how it performed on second serves, though. I also don't think I had to hit very many second serves.

Ross,

Best of luck on that black-and-orange-painted road. I played the old 03 Tour for a few weeks. Just as you described. Easy, easy groundies from the back of the court. That one also served a LOT better than the current EXO Tour, though I thought the EXO Tour was a little better on groundies (there's the rub). Fun sticks, though, and a definite potential match for the kind of game I think you like to play.

Meanwhile, this way, a fascinating conundrum of late. In my last couple of outings just rallying around, the BC 20 just feels so much more natural and comfy to me than the Platinum 94. With the 20, I'm in this easy swinging zone, whipping it anywhere I want. With the Plat I'm sending the ball long, or duffing it, everything's just been kind of weird lately. So against a buddy a few days ago, I used the BC 20 during a practice set and lost, 4-6. Then I picked up the Platinum for the second set and rolled, 6-0. All that was loose in practice sharpened up in game play. .... Few more days of practice, and again, BC20 just shine, shine, shines, and I get re-addicted to the feel of it. Same 'off' feeling with the Platinum, by comparison. Today I play a league match and, with the BC20, lose the first set 1-6 (to my opponent's credit, he opened in some kind of monster zone, just swinging away and nailing lines left and right, serving great, etc). After the first-set drubbing the 20 goes back into the bag, I take out the Platinum. Guess what happens. 6-2, 6-2 for the victory, the Plat again just razor sharp in game play in a way that I'd been struggling to find in practice. It's kind of hilarious. But weird.

Anyway, the Plat has most certainly earned the starting nod for the next match.

Meanwhile, that Blue 99 I got didn't really work out for me. Didn't punch the ball as naturally as the Platinum did for me and was tougher to get around. For whatever reason, I can't seem to get along with the Donnay 99s but the 94s I love. So I put the Blue up for sale and got a trade offer I couldn't refuse, a Gold 94.

And so it goes...

You can't stop a racquetholic. You can only hope to contain him.

Something about those donnays, they just make the game so easy. I think that is what you are experiencing. But that is truly fascinating to recover like that after switching back to them.

They have a nice feel, but I can see how the bc20 would be more satisfying from that aspect. I am hoping the 7g has a pstgt feel or a muted Wilson/Dunlop thing going on. I think Dunlops have some of the best feel, particularly the 100 and 200. Basically I am hearing the 7g is a lighter and bigger hitting pstgt with even more control. We shall see..if that is the case, i will be extremely happy.

It's all about consistency out there. I know I got that with the platinum.
