How is Berdych ahead of Ferrer?

I don't get this:

Ferrer is 5-2 in sets, Berdych is 5-4. How is Ferrer not at the top of the group?

It's based on head-to-head.

Berdych beat Ferrer, therefore he is ahead.

Looking forward to tomorrow's matches!

it is fairly straight forward innit? With the win, Bird Itch and Ferrer are both 2-1 in RR play. With the head-to-head win over Ferrer, Bird Itch wins the group.

best match up now, Berd -Tsonga is perfect and Rodge has never lost to Fer. his title to lose

yeah hopefully berd and tsonga take a pound of flesh from each other , soften them up for Roger.

But im not going to overlook ferrer who is playing well.

but maybe his confidence will be shaken a bit by the berdych loss.

I THINK it should go by sets lost and games lost. clearly ferrer beat djokovic and murray in straight sets and took berdy to three. should've matter if he lost to the berdy man. weird.
BERDYCH PRETTY MUCH WENT TO THREE SETS IN EVERY MATCH.

They said if Berdych lost to Ferrer then Djokovic would qualify with 1 win and 2 losses. While Janko had 1 win and 1 loss, so shouldn't he be the one who qualified instead of Novak?

No one with only 2 matches can qualify. Once Janko got in, he had no chance to go through.

Not even if he won both of his matches which would mean Berdych and Novak would have one win each(one at most in Berdych's case) ?

Yup he could have gone through that way. 2-1 > 2-0 in this tourny but 2-0 is still better than 1-2. It's supposed to be harder for an alternate to qualify, not impossible :p

For what it's worth, I tend to agree. I compile my own stats for the WTF results and it just looked odd seeing Berdych sitting atop the table when Ferrer had clearly better set w/l and games w/l ratios!

that's interesting. h2h seems like the go to tiebreaker in any athletic situation. Berdych could have been 3-0, and with an identical record to a guy he just beat, why shouldn't he rank 1?

Yes, I agree that this head-to-head should not be used when 2 players are tied. Round robin play is to play against 3 other players, accumulate wins/losses in match, sets, games, etc. So why is the WTF "double" emphasising a loss that Ferrer lost to Berdych? Ferrer fared better against his other opponents as compared to Berdych who played the same opponents (except Tipsarevic), so why is the WTF not take into account Ferrer dominance against the other opponents and just focusing on his 3 sets close loss against Berdych? I feel when 2 players are tied, matches won/lost, sets won/lost, games won/lost should be the fair judge of who tops the group, since isn't this the essence of round robin play?

To me it makes no sense to look at set win/loss ratio when two players are equal in wins and they've already played each other. It make perfect sense to say they won 2 and lost 1 match each - so whoever won when they played each other gets the higher rating.
